    The reason the glass fibre goes nice and soft, is the matting is held together with a binder, which dissolves with the resin.

    Del if you use alloy tbe or pvc for that matter it could be storage space for a tool roll. Remember it is not so much what you use as the supports you glass in but the curved or box section of the glass creates that gives the rigigity. Ive seen it done with kitcher paper roll centre tubes for moulds which take a far greater beating than the finished product ever will. I agree woth some other comments that it looks mighty snug. But hey fibreglass is a forgiving medium easy enough to cut and lengthen if needed.
    Keep up the good work.😀👍👍

    Should have made the bracing and mounting frame first far easier and that's well tight your jeans were dragging on the tank, once you get on in leathers you will need prizing off the seat with a tyre lever.

    Del if you use a consolidating roller you will get a stronger job with less air bubbles and use less resin. Make one yourself with a pice of m10 or 12 threaded rod probably 75mm long drill each end and fit to a wire frame that you could make from an old spoke bent in half and ope the ends out to a triangle then bend the ends in to fit your length of threaded rod a quick weld where the wires go down towards your rod roller and your done for ten minutes work and less than a buck in materials. If you put another layer of glass on simply lay the tissue on and roller it you will find you won't need to add extra resin. Btw the tissue is used as a first layer on tight corners as it forms easier than the thicker matt either chopped stand or woven.
    Keep up the good work.

    Del, its too late now but 5l of resin with catalyst, 16 square m of 300g matting and 5 square m of tissue from east coast fibreglass would have cost about 55 quid probably way more than you needed but half the cost, so in theory less money for the quantities you may have got away with. Handy for any future projects you may do..

    (P) Looking better and better fella :-)
    Will you be going to Mackies bike meet 2nd June? I’m “hoping" to get down to Cambridge from Anglesey… but the old girl needs a full exhaust system replaced (not the nicest job on an old VFR) and a replacement oil cooler pipe… not so easy on a 22 year old bike and right now I’m struggling to get the part. Fingers crossed I’ll get her running in time and maybe see you and MAckie there.
    Still torn now…the new tail or the old… Like em both!

    top job as always.5 layers of 450 csm gives you around 5-6 mm of thickness depend how resin rich it is. Now waiting for "demould ", but you do it asap it is still flexi and will be easier to take it of the bike.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Sven, thank you for that advice, that is a useful reassurance... 6mm, or so, was what I was hoping for, it's thicker in many areas where it's overlapped, I have some air bubbles to carve out and re-fill next, but Sat video breaks it out of the mould and thankfully the clay stayed flexible and soft, so I was actually able to clip out,a nd dismantle, the cage from underneath and then peel out the clay and the foil, etc., and it is a impressively strong and extremely light... I think you'll be quite impressed (I hope!), thanks for your support, all the best, and thanks for your advice again...

  • @craigh310
    @craigh310 6 лет назад

    I would suggest soaking the completed item in water for a good few hours to see if that will help breakdown the clay. The mesh will bend it's just the clay part that you need to get out as clean as possible to help prevent braking the seat

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  6 лет назад

      Hi Craig, I like that thinking, I'm a couple of videos ahead and have broken it out now, fortunately the clay stayed damp being sandwiched between all the rags and the foil, which kept it all sealed, like a giant Dairylee triangle lol... so the great bonus is, I actually managed to recover 9% of the clay, stuck it all back in the bucket with a big splash of water and then I'll knead it all back in to one lump in the future !

    If you've got resin left after the last layers you could make bulkheads for strength instead of wood which will swell and contract when wet.

  • @ollieb9875
    @ollieb9875 6 лет назад

    Enjoying this build for all the stuff I've never done before...like fiberglass. I'm curious why you would use wood bracing instead of metal. With wood I always wonder about rot...but then they made Mosquitos out of wood

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  6 лет назад

      It was really for lightness more then anything David, but looking a little further in to it, you'd need a chunky piece of wood to be strong and a thin piece of metal would weigh the same...so may scrap that and just use some 1" angle, but a few more jobs to do first to stabilise the panel ! Thanks for watching....

      @Moonfleet41  6 лет назад

      Good thinking that man! I was only talking about that this morning, as I took the trouble to weigh, with my new scales!, a foot of 3x2 wood against a foot of 1" angle iron... and would you believe, they're pretty much the same weight ! Plus, if you check out Saturday's video, you'll see the panel has come out ridiuclously stronger than I thought... so I doesn't really need more strength, just some supports to bolt in to... learning as I go mate !

    • @Moonfleet41

      It's certainly not a show bike, I can assure you of that, the peak of the tail lays backwards so shouldn't present any safety issues, and it'll get a little rounded yet... but it's not a long distance bike anyway, you're right, streetfighters are for ragging round town lol Thanks for watching Wayne...

    • @Moonfleet41

      Hi Gary, all the usual things, same as any bike... life expectancy of the consumables, is the servicing up to date?? Fresh MOT?? All the sorts of things you'd check on any bike... you're on to a winner with a ZX12, as they are pretty indestructible, and if you're buying it from a pal, he's hardly gonna stitch you up... without seeing the bike, I couldn't make a judgement, but I know of no known faults to look out for, other than wear and tear or neglect... good luck with it mate

    Wood? I think a hard wood would be your better option as there's very minimal expansion and be stronger great seat so far

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  6 лет назад

      Thanks buddy, great thinking, but of course that's way heavier than soft wood, but found an odd thing just checking some options yesterday, and that was that 1ft of 1" angle iron weighs about the same as a 1ft of 3x2 wood...??!!! So may go for the iron option just as a mounting point to bolt to some struts and as the panel is now broken out of the mould, I've discovered it's really rigid and stiff, so flex is no longer an issue, as I thought it might be... just need somewhere to mount it!

    Body filer paint why not a gel coat?

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  6 лет назад

      Hi Stephen, I like that... because gel coat seals against air bubble expansion, I've got a fair few to eliminate at the weekend and next week, but it is a bumpy surface, so will need some sandable filler to fine tune the shape, not much, just a thin skin and mostly sanded off, just leaving the low sposts - I'll look in to gel coat options, but it's getting 2-pack painted in the end anyway, so may not need to .... thanks buddy!

    Hi Del, not that i'm an expert in anything in life but they often use foam beams in boats because once they are covered in fibreglass they are as strong as older materials. So expandable foam cut to the shape you want or even something like celotex insulation or recticel insulation. check out this video from about 4.37. ruclips.net/video/qSL71LlgCsYK/видео.htmleep up the good work!!
