    Afternoon Del. Mate I've followed this build right from the get go (and you from the old garage). I must say its given me the drive to start a project, experiment like you have. I am currently in my last 12 months of the Armed Forces, then I'm moving abroad but having something like your channel to inspire me to do something constructive will help with my PTSD. Absolutely love what your creating mate, well done!

      Thank so much Bri' its really good of you to get on touch and share your story mate, what a new adventure you're about to embark on, its not easy switching over to civvie life, but in a year or two you'll be grafted into it, and wonder what Army life was like..Its a real honour to be able to inspire you to get into something constructive, and good luck getting your head on an even keel mate... Keep in touch, and thanks so much for your kind support.. Crack on... Del.

    when skimming over glass like that add thinners to the filler when mixing makes for a much thinner layer takes half the labour out and you get much more time to apply

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  6 лет назад

      Goo thinking, I haven't done that before, but I will give that a try... if you got it thin enough, you could almost pour it on in flat areas, and it would almost be self leveling... but it would have to be flat areas, otherwise it would run off lol - thank you for the tip Ricky, this is why I love YT, with our shared knowledge we can always learn new things....!

    Looks good Del! Just make sure when you do put some primer/paint on there to see the impurities etc. that it's of high quality and compatible with the layers to come!
    Did something similar to your projects back in the days and I took a can of cheaper primer when going through the layers of filler. I gave the finished parts to the paint shop for spray painting everything professionally. The first coating they put on had a chemical reaction with my previous primer I used to see for flaws in the filler! Basically the whole thing looked like a raisin with sharp edges everywhere! I had to grind all the filler down and clean everything with thinner to remove all the incompatible primer I had used. Basically did the work twice due to me being cheap. Probably you will not have these problems, but something to be aware of. Cheers
    EDIT: too late, sorry

    Hi Del,
    I have finally caught up completely with the build, and I must say, I am impressed. I mean for me to get rid of something that I spent 150 hours on to start over is a hard decision. and yet, I think the bike will look better for it. I am always surprised how it all takes shape.
    I think the tank needs something else. Otherwise it's just.. a tank you know?

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  6 лет назад

      Thanks buddy, you're very kind, and you're very right as well... it was, indeed, a bit of a wrench to scrub that steel tail and start again... but it was way out of proportion to the bike, and I didn't want to sacrifice the bike having the right look just because of the hours invested... I'm not on a deadline, it'll be finished when it's finished, and when I'm happy with the way it looks... The tank will be getting something more, I have a wonderful cable driven analogue speedo which I wanna build an a-symmetrical pod for on the front edge of the tank, so that will be another part of the project once the tai's ready to go !

    Hey Del! been a while since ive left a message and me and a friend from work just got home and first thing we did is watch this and i cant cant explain the level of excitement that came from the idea of you "thinning" out that tail! its a must like a major serious must!! keep up the work man i adore this bike so much id love to see it in a competition at bum in the mud or other rally HINT HINT ;) love you bro

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Keiran, wow thanks for that cool feedback mate.. the tail just looked like it was from a far bigger bike, and didn't hang right... streetfighters need a tiny tail and a big fat tyre!... it's not so far of finishing now, once the tail is all done, then it's time for wiring, MOT and paint, so am hopeful that maybe this year I'll have it done , just gotta keep at it , and I do intend to take it to some shows for sure... !

    Fair play to you filling all that, that's a lot of time and work. I wouldn't have been that fussy and just skimmed over the rougher and dimply bits =P
    I hadn't watched your making of this seat with the bubble free fibreglass so I was staring at that seat for ages in your intro wondering what it was.
    And well done to you not chucking that filler dust in the bin, what you did is very responsible of you caring about the environment and all things breathing, nice one ; )
    I'm looking forward to seeing how you're gonna make the foam for the top of that seat.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  6 лет назад

      Thanks buddy, I think the first time you do a lot of filler sanding in your garage, especially with an air sander, then you come in the next day and you can still smell it... there are no fumes obviously, it's just micro dust in the air... so it seemed obvious..... but I've actually kept that dust for Sunday week's video, and am gonna re-cycle it in to some more filler... I've done it a few times when I've run out but still need an extra spoonful... I guess, in a way, it's even more responsible than throwing it out in a safe lump, plus it saves a few bob too lol !

    Del Great vid like the idea of thinning sides down getting rid of the tabs i read the comments from the other viewers for ideas and like the one about thinning filler with thinners for skimming it thinner like the tool reviews have a good weekend you two 👍

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks Kevin.. yeah i liked that comment too, ill be giving it a try next weekend in the Sunday review.... i filmed tomorrows already, (some useful little rescue tools).. but next weekend im going to try out another thing that a viewer suggested.. ive made up some filler from using the sanded off dust in the past when ive run out.... but someone suggested using Talcum powder to make filler... and you know how things get passed around and exaggerated.. so im gonna try it out, and also ill try the thinners trick to make runny filler too.. it's all handy to know if it works before you rely on it for a job..!

    Have you thought about building a shop air filter for the garage? There are a number of videos about how to make them inexpensively and you could easily throw one together in a few hours using a simple box fan, some inexpensive lumber and standard furnace filters (assuming those are available on your side of the Atlantic, too).

      The tail tip is temporary mate, just until i get it properly bolted down solid, then i can graft the light tube in there which will give the back edge a muscular curve like the rest of the bike... all in hand mate... got to laminate the support struts into it this coming week.. • @mikestewart7322
    @mikestewart7322 6 лет назад

    Hi Del, see at 15 51, that looks like the gap you should have between back of the tailpiece and the tank, just don’t look enough room when you sat on it earlier. You still cool with it matey?

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Mike, stick with it buddy, once the front strut is in place it lifts the tail panel vertically upwards by an inch, this will bring the front lip of the panel back 6mm as when you lift the seat higher the gap gets wider... there will be at least a 6mm panel gap between the tank and the gap when they're bolted down, enough room for them both to move freely on their rubber mounts and not touch... also once I've fitted a pad on it to sit on, that'll lift me a little higher still so it'll actually be quite roomy when it's done - certainly for my arse lol !

    • @mikestewart7322
      @mikestewart7322 6 лет назад

      Moonfleet41 understood Del, now you’ve said about the 6mm. Think my missus would like 6mm, every little helps lol🤪

  • @dachlatte
    @dachlatte 6 лет назад +3

    Greate work mate! But am I the only one that thinks the space between the tank and the back rest is a little too small? Can you sit and move inside that small gap? Not trying to be a dick or anything. Im just wondering.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  6 лет назад

      Hi buddy, yeah just about... I did sit on it in a previous video with the camera side on exactly like it is in the avatar, and it is, maybe, a little snug, there's probably only an inch to move back and forward, but I fit in there just right... you know how it is, things always look a bit different on camera.... but the gap from the back of the tank to the face of the hump is about 11"... which will keep me off the doughnuts !

    • @planefloat
      @planefloat 6 лет назад

      Moonfleet41 That's been my thought too, Del. It also looks like it could be a bit of a challenge mounting and dismounting the bike. I learn a lot from your videos, on the fiberglass series, I've learned not to try it myself.... I'm staying tuned, buddy!

      Won't the seat padding raise the posterior to more space higher up where it tapers out?

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  6 лет назад

      Hi Gary, I guess, in theory, yes it will, but I will only use a thick layer of leather wit, maybe, a think skin of memory foam underneath it, not going for a thick seat... but a good idea indeed if it turns out to be too snug due to the 'doughnut' count in the future !

    Looks spot on again mate, providing inspiration for my next winter project. Any advice mate on a bike that’s been stood for ten years? It’s my step dads Honda goldwing, (not my cup of tea but it’s a free project I can make some money on) it’s been stood in a shed and has a trike conversion on it. Cosmetics are in decent nick brakes etc are easy enough, but where would you start with regards to the engine? Surely it’s not a case of new oil, filter and fresh fuel?

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  6 лет назад +1

      Hi buddy, wow that sounds like a fun project, and you're right to think twice about the engine... the good thing is it's a Honda, and they're well built and reliable... but 10yrs plays havoc with an engine and there will be issues... the first thing, and I mean the very first thing, before you even turn it over is take the cam belt cover off and put a new cam belt on it... if that's perished through, or the teeth are perished badly, then when you turn it over, if it snaps, or the teeth shear off, then the cams go out of line with the crank, pistons hit valves and you've done internal damage to th engine - you WILL need to replace that cam belt anyway, so do it first before you even turn the engine over....
      Then it's the carbs next, get them off, get the float bowls off and get all the snot cleaned out of them that will inevitably be in there... drop the rocker covers off, easy enough as they're on the outside, clean out any gunk in there, spray with lots of WD40, get everything wet and clean again, then put them back on... then with the carbs back on, it's simply, like you said, fresh oil, fresh battery, and with the plugs out and a good squirt of WD40 in the holes...... spin it over...
      Once you've got it all turning over nice and freely, stick the plugs back in, turn the fuel on and fire it up... the rest you'll have to devise with what you find as results, let us know how you get on, good luck with it mate !

      Thanks so much for your really kind comments Keith, its evolving as it goes along, i wanted to to be as small and 'tail high' as possible, but still follow the lines of the other bodywork which is quite rounded and bulbous.. i dont want ti to look detached and not match the bike. so i made lots of extra to trim off, and can then get that trimming just right once its bolted down solid.. and that will be this weeks tasks so make the struts to fit the mounting into.... wish me luck..lo Thanks again for your support my friend, its really appreciated.. Good idea to use the sub frame . Will be much nicer once you get the sides off, when will you remove that toblerlone from the back?

      Hi buddy.. im going to fit the tube i made as part of the old undertray, then fit the light down inside it.. that will give a rounded profile, and ill cut down and curve the back edge down to it so make it look less pointed and more muscular....hopefully.! got to get it solidly bolted down this week, then ill know where it sits and can fine tune the look..!
