Good morning Del, what an absolute gem of a result! The design is so well thought out : clean, tidy, functional and beautifully presented.....love it.
As much as I'm in awe of your amazing design and craftmanship, I'm so impressed that you can get so much done in such little time (adding to that, moving the camera and tripod around endless times in one shoot).
Time management in a professional kitchen is one of the most important attributes a great chef must have. It doesn't matter how talented they are, if they don't get stuff done in a timely fashion, they won't be regarded as an important member of the team.

Morning Brother... how wonderful to hear from you, as always, and what a great anaology too, I can imagine being part of a kitchen team is so important with everyone relying on your contribution... you are right, moving the camera around, framing shots in the right way, it does take time... I have to also be careful with my practices as already trashed one lens with hot flying weld sparks, so the camera often has to be at least 15ft away from the action and zoomed right in, so it's out of harms way... garage is a dangerous place, just like a kitchen and it's really important to keep yourself safe as ya'll know being a busy chef ! Moonfleet41 ouch, I can’t imagine changing that lens was a cheap fix. In all honesty, I think the garage is a more dangerous place than a kitchen. Burn marks and slicing into your finger are coming practise in a busy kitchen but those wounds heal.
I used to work with a guy that worked as a mechanic and he lost one of his fingers on some machinery 🙁.

That unit has a functional beauty all of its own, Del. Nicely done! I could watch you fabricating such components all evening, helped also by the clever shooting, editing and production of all of your videos. Who needs the Potter's Wheel anyway? (Showing my age there..... 😕)

This piece looks great really enjoyed watching it come together and despite it being made of steel rather than plastic you have still saved some weight overall including the battery.
The original entire tail, (that big steel panel made from two tanks), and the metal frame under it, plus of course the original lead battery all weighed in at almost 12Kg, and this is 2.5Kg, including the Lithium battery, so im gonna creat the tail pane this time form fiberglass so capitalize on that fat weight saving.. Hi buddy, I think if I remember rightly, the point I was making was I'm not a fan of the 'booted up the arse' style off the shelf panels that the Germans used to make, so am making a panel for this that will, hopefully, compliment the shape and be a blend of modern sportsbike and old school fighter... may not get it right, but am gonna try, so wish me luck !!

I love the result and have just a silly little thought to add. Have you considered drilling some weight-reducing lightening holes in the middle portions of the larger flat plates that make up this assembly? Done correctly I do not think that they would reduce the assembly's strength in a significant way. That said, they might not wind up saving all that much weight and they would require a fair bit of work.
Hi buddy, good thinking, and a relevant suggestion, all weight is weight, no matter how small the saving, but I have decided to have a stab at making a funky fibreglass tail, rather than a steel one, and that really will save some weight, so if I can pull it off, that may well be the way I go ! Thanks for the suggestion buddy, onothing's too much work, it's just whatever works and looks right aye?!

One of these days I'm going to have to sort out the Bandit tail, so while it won't go shorty I do want to reposition the battery and electronics, so this has been very useful. Great to see how much easier it is to weld proper bits of steel without worrying so much about blowing through. Great to catch up with you last week, keep well the pair of you.
Cheers buddy, when I made that tail, I discovered very quickly, that the frame tubes are 1mm thick wall tubing and blow through in an instant, so you'll need to bring yer best game to weld to that tubing, those trellis tubes welded in were a nightmare... perhaps if you wanna reduce the height of the tail, you could switch over to a lithium which is 2" shallower and drop the base of the box lower down too and you'll lose at least half the height... just thinkin' out loud fellah... see you soon , Del

Thanks for the reminder on those tubes. I want to keep the trellis, reducing the plastic undertray so the trellis is more visible and reducing the height of the tail unit and making it more of a match to the tank. I'm wondering about Lithium - it might just be what I need, Skal Del.

Coming together well now Del,i was just goin to ask about your welds....no nothing shocking but i was wondering as ive noticed a few times now you've shown a piece of 'finished' work and there are lots of weld spatters left stuck all around the weld lines.
I dont know if you make a point of banging them off before any pre paint prep work,but as an apprentice welder way back in the day we allways used to have a piece of scrap steel flat bar to hand,made it a point of sliding the flat bar up and down where we had welded and those spatters generally came right off no probs,i find it makes for a cleaner job even though we were only making garden gates and fences...,albeit it some pretty fancy ones,real ornate scroll-work etc.

I have a question for you, if you have time. I have started a restoration of a 1980 Yamaha XT250. I have a real issue with some rubber seals which are stuck to the metal like with superglue !!!! I have tried acetone, paint remover, heat in the oven, torch.... the problem is that part of the seals are in a really thin groove, and I can’t remove them mechanically... If you or some of the viewers have any advice, I’ll be more than happy to hear it. Back to the videos ( streetfighter # 110 !!!)

Hi Diego, I presume these seals are trashed and from what you describe you have rubber stuck to the metal? Can you not cut the remaining rubber off with a blade? Sorry I can't answer more, I don't really know what you're working on... thank you for your kind support on the videos, enjoy!

Hi Gary, with the seat height, am going for roughly the same as standard, or maybe a little higher, but with flat bars, that are higher than the clip ons, so the height should be about the same as standard bike, I want it lent forward and aggressive looking ! Thanks Paul, it's not a big perch, but I wanna keep the entire tail inside the crown of the back tyre, so the bike takes on a good stumpy look... really appreciate your kind support ... and I'll need to stay off the donuts so I can still get on it lol
Excellent vid again Del as always. Next the tail section which I'm really looking forward to. Could you tell me why you welded along the inside of the battery box without stopping but then spot welded the outside edge of the battery box? The only conclusion I can think of was it made the welds smaller so it could be easily smoothed down with a flap disc. Really enjoy your work Del as it inspires us all that we can have a go at doing it ourselves and with your help, encouragement and especially your expertise we get to do it right. Say Hi to Pen.
Hi James, I have an embarrassing admission to make to that one... and it goes a little like this... on the inside of the box, the light emitted from the arc reflects on all the faces and you get this wonderful clear vision of the weld puddle and con direct it perfectly along the seam, but on the outside edge, all that light doesn't get reflected, it bleeds away, so the weld arc I see through the mask, is restricted to an inch all around the point of arc, meaning that I can't see where I'm going as I advance the weld and it's often the case that you end up drifting off the seam altogether, so you have to do it again and end up with a mess! So as a solution to that, I weld along the line in 1" hits, stopping each time to check the direction for the next inch...
Now I don't know if this is a bad quality weld mask (it is rather old lol) or poor eyesight (I am rather old!), probably a combination of both, so hope that explains it buddy, like I've always said, I'm not a welder, and am sure the real guys who do this every day have a little chuckle at my amateur fumblings !
Afternoon Del, it takes a real man to admit to his faults but to me it actually made sense because if you did do a complete line of weld you would end up with quite a lot of weld on an outside edge. Spot welding it made it smaller and easier to clean up and I will certainly use that method next time. I'm later in years too being 57 and I stick weld mostly as that was what I was taught as a kid but I do have a gasless welder which I struggle with because it splatters everywhere no matter what I do.......ideas please lol Both enjoy the rest of the weekend and I'm so looking forward to the next vid and keep up the great work Del.
Hi again James, like I said, it's just a matter of not wanting to ever off the joint end up having to re-weld it then grind off the mess... it's purely an eyesight thing, I can assure you, lol
With your gasless welder, I presume you're using the proper flux-core wire?? As you need that in the absence of gas, and you can use an anti-spatter spray that will cut it down a lot... good luck with it, and always good to hear from ya!
Hi Del, many thanks for your replies mate. I'm using the wire that came with the machine but what I might do is get the flux-core wire that you suggested and a can of the anti splatter which I see you were using. Ebay here we come lol Forgot to mention Del a couple of us had a ride over to Krazy Horse in Bury St. Edmunds today and had a great time looking at all the fantastic bikes including the wonderful Nortons. Hey Pap Del, can I recommend keeping a simple sketchbook of your ideas? Nothing fancy just something to help you keep track of your thoughts. You could even print out photos of motorbikes and sketch on top of that.

Hi Del sorry if I’ve missed this in early episodes but where is the coolant expansion tank going? Is there going to be room for the oem tank in your custom tail for that or you going easy generic streetfigher style with a alloy bottle or similar rear the radiator? Regards Mike
I have no need for one buddy as am running water less coolant so it's not required...

Ayup Foggy, once I've finished welding bits on it, and messing around which might scratch it, then I thought I might treat myself to a little powder coat , as the firm I could use is only round the corner... ! Catch you at the TLK maybe one Thursday...

Why use steel when aluminum or carbon fiber is much lighter?
This steel frame structure is about 2kg, and the fiberglass panel over it will be even less than that... its hardly a race bike.. and welding steel is so much easier too..

On a side note, what's the spray in between welds? I'm only a novice welder, and haven't seen this before...
Hi Doug, great to hear from you, as ever, thanks for your kind words, the spray is an anti-spatter spray... you buy it from the weld supply shop and it's job is to cut down on the amount of spatter coming off the weld arc, it won't eliminate it, but more importantly, it stops it from sticking to things, so when you get that weld spatter all over the bench and the job, you normally have to grind it off, but when you spray down with a layer of this, the weld spatter just wipes away... you can also spray it in to the nozzle and it stops it clogging up too... hope you're enjoying your projects too!

Job's a good 'un indeed Del! Paint or powder coat finish?
I'd usually paint it, but I may break with traditional lol and splash out on a spot of powder this time - all depends whether I can decide it's finished and doesn't need anything else done, as I don't wanna cut in to fresh powder coat, whereas with paint I can just re-paint it.... we shall see !
