      If you want truly compact, stealth, serious sensor and serious lens, then GR III is the only one. Yes Fuji has a compact but it is not nearly as stealth as the Ricoh.

    1 big thing people generally forget when talking about small camera confidence:
    Small cameras make the subject more comfortable too.
    Being shot with a big DSLR is intimidating because it feels too pro. Being shot with a phone is creepy, because it's so easy to publish online in your hand. Being shot with a point and shoot is less worrying because we think they're shitty tourist cameras and don't feel like the subject as much.

    Some very interesting points that were made. My biggest problem is the viewfinder. Perhaps it’s just the fact that I’m older, but I’ve gotten used to looking through a viewfinder to compose my images. I have tried with my phone before, but the glare on the screen, and the time it takes me to know what I am really seeing.
    Hard to change after almost 50 years! 🖖

      @@Stickybuttonthe same way I know on all my cameras. By learning how it works and using it until its instinctive.
      And honestly if your first thought is "no I need my autofocus", I'd say you're focusing on the wrong things.
      You can easily adapt to how your camera does things if you use it often enough. It's not hard to adapt to not being able to see what's being auto focused on and just knowing without looking once you've been using the GR for a while. Personally speaking while I would buy a camera that lacked an auto focus (and own several that do), I'd never buy a camera without a viewfinder or viewfinder option.

    3:57 to be more precise, when the snap distance is set the camera lens goes to it immediately upon start up and after any other focus routines. • @simon359

      @@phillipbanes5484 The closest serious competitor in the reasonably priced range is the Fuji X100 series. However, the GRIII is way more compact. When I was shooting with it, it felt like a toy since it was so light. I think the body is made from magnesium which is super tough and super light.
      I am not worried about noise too much. The new Photoshop denoise does a fantastic job with my Sony A7RIV high ISO images. Sony has noise even at ISO 400. Photoshop does a fantastic job cleaning up the noise. In the process it adds detail/definition that is missing in the original. It also sharpens the images too. Overall, the quality is noticeably and substantially improved without any penalty.
      My K1 was much better (cleaner) than the Sony at ISOs up to 1600 or even beyond. To be fair the noise in the Sony and my K1 looked like film grain which is actually desirable in some instances to give the images a more "organic" look. In Photoshop, I cut back the denoise level to 35-40. The default setting is 50 and can go up to 100.

    I have two street shooters, a GR and an Olympus. But the better one of the two is not the GR but the Olympus.. I find people notice my GR far more than they notice the Olympus. I think because it’s smaller and looks more 'specialist', this makes subjects more curious, as well as suspicious when they clock the 'sneaky' GR. There is also snap focus on the Olympus, but unlike the GR, it’s always on. But the Olympus can be programmed so it’s easy to switch between the two functions using a two way switch on the back. The Olympus does have a smaller sensor, but it’s still very high res, and of course it takes interchangeable lenses and paired with the Leica 15mm is not only pin sharp, but you have more speed. Weather sealed too. So in my opinion whereas the GR is a great street camera, it ain’t as brilliant as the Olympus. I just need a slightly bigger pocket.

    I’ve owned this camera, and the feature set is incredible. How the engineers crammed so many things into such a small body is a testament to their ingenuity. The lens is insanely sharp also. That said, I just didn’t gel with it at all. I found it a bit too much. With hindsight, I was starting on a personal journey of wanting cameras with much simpler feature sets. A camera, not a computer so to speak. I don’t need IBIS, or video, or Wi-Fi etc. so a few years later I now own a Leica M9, and it’s as simple as it gets really. That said, I’ve really missed the GRiii lately, so have been looking at the much older GRD models. I think the point and shoot resurgence has had some influence on this. If you’ve never tried one of these cameras, it deserves all the hype heaped upon it.

    I wanted this camera but just reading the reviews people hate it because it can't auto focus correctly except for in broad daylight. A camera that can't focus....that's a huge deal breaker!

    Cool camera but...Ive started getting into some street photography and as a portrait shooter, I dont like not being able to isolate a subject. 28mm is too wide and on a crowded street, everything and everyone is in focus. Id much prefer a zoom or longer lens. I might check out the GRIIIx

      @markfreemanvideo 10 месяцев назад

      I think lens on GR3x is better optically. You still won't get the subject isolation. But it's a tradeoff. I know what I can get with my full frame sony and Canon FD 85 1.2, but it's physically impossible to get in a tiny, small form factor pocket camera. The closest it gets, is Sony RX1R with 35 2.0 on a full frame, but it is expensive as hell, and still not as compact as Ricoh. For this price, I'm fine walking with my regular sized Sony A7.

    Let's be honest, dedicated point and shoots are a bit of 'audiophile' type fun, the image processing and mutli-lens tech in any flagship phone these days crushes all of these. I know camera channels have to sell dedicated cameras for sponsorships, but let's be honest.

    I recently got a GR3, it's amazing but I think it still lacks a little bit. A majority of the camera seems plasticky so I'm not sure if it's as robust / good build quality as other cameras. In addition, the camera seems to overheat easily and batteries only seem to last very few shots, my GR3 can crank out 100 JPG only shots on the lowest LCD brightness setting but my Canon G7X Mk II can shoot like, 200ish photos per battery, massive difference.

    Have to disagree with this one. I've had numerous GRs. They are nice cameras. Biggest issue is durability. I have three broken ones sitting in a plastic bag. The best street camera is hands down any of the Leica Q cameras. Only thing superior about the GR is the size and price.

    I would argue that 28mm is indeed a classic focal length, used in many classic films. However, films are basically shot on APSC format, not "full frame" (because in cinema cameras 35mm film is rolling vertically, not horizontally like in stills cameras). Therefore, this classic 28mm lens focal shot on APSC, in "full frame" equivalent is actually around 40mm. Which is exactly what Ricoh did with the latest iteration, and it's close to Fuji's 35mm. For me, 28mm on a full frame is just too wide, versus 35-40 is a swet spot where you can do portraits, but some landscapes as well.

    • @MxMx-tr8fs
      @MxMx-tr8fs Год назад

      "Better" in which way? Image Quality? No, absolutely not. The files from the Ricoh are stunning. Viewfinder? Of course, the GRIII does not have one. But if I want to take a camera that does *not* fit in my jacket, anyway, I take my Fuji X-T4. If I don't want to be burdened by a camera, , though, I take the Ricoh. It cannot be overestimated how small the camera is, even compared to the X100. I got rid of my X100, kept the X-T4, got the GRIII, and never looked back, and IQ is not a compromised compared to the X100, at all.
