I have been shooting my GR3 in this setup and methodology based on your instruction for weeks now. Hands down amazing, wowww. The flexibility to shoot in snap distance priority in that fashion and able to switch immediately out. Brilliant. Thank you SO much for sharing this. It’s a game changer and truly the maximum way to shoot this incredible machine.
The snap focus is what really sets this camera apart from the 100v and of course the size. I hope you become a Ricoh ambassador so you can tell us when the gr4 will come out 💁🏻♀️
My only wish is a flip up screen for low angle shooting and holiday selfies with the gf. My X70 has one and they are pretty big in terms of usability and creativity. I feel like I can get my camera into more interesting places and angles because of it.
I really think you nailed the whole point of the Ricoh GR camera in this recommended setup. I didn’t buy this for “crazy bokeh” as I did for everyday street stills, and you really dialed in how to do that with relative ease. I’ll bet most people that buy these also have a bulkier camera kit. This little camera should be fun and composition focused, save the headaches for our bigger kits. Love your quick toggle method you’ve discovered between that and the occasional 2.8 Bokeh option. Really excited to use this setup method!
Ricoh's have had snap focus since the film GR1v (I have two of them). Ricoh's work amazing one handed, shot in M @ F8 / 1/500s on the street. As Capa "If your pictures aren't good enough, you aren't close enough", so 2.5m Snap is too far away. I shoot right up close to subjects using 1.5m snap distance. Also as Daido Moriyama once said, if you bring a camera up to your eye, you polute the scene - not for the subject you are aiming at, for everyone else around that sees you. Shooting one handed allows you to see the scene in your head and understand the angle to tilt the GR, while getting into position to take the shot and get out again without being scene.
These settings essentially turn it into a Lomo, especially the snap distances. As someone getting back into photography after over a decade with this GRIII it feels like coming home to that era of clamshell point and shooters. But this time, with the latest digital tech.
The movie button on the left side is a good one to customize as well since most of us won't ever shoot video. I have it switching between RAW and JPEG but I'll probably change it because I prefer RAW
This is definitely the most fun way to shoot for me too. It's very bright here in Mexico, so I usually shoot at f4-6.3. Luckily if I leave it in P mode this is mostly what it chooses. So really all I have to do is point and shoot. Now my focus is entirely on composition and keeping a clean concise frame with a good amount of context. The crazy thing is when I started to use those apertures for night photography too, because I enjoyed more depth for my style. Great insights and great images as always. ✌️
Très chouette vidéo. J'ai reçu mon gr iii récemment. Très bons conseils de settings. Merci.
Hi! No way to adjust DOF 1,2 or 3d level. Can't find where / how you achieve it. No problem to adjust the distance, but no way to find out how to ser DOF level. Anyone can help please. Thank you.
looking for a solid compact option to carry on runs - how concerned would you be about the GRIII if it were carried in say a vest/sling bag or waist belt?
Great video. BTW, i got one question, if i use snap distance priority mode and got all the set like you, and i want to freeze ppl on street, how do gr knows what shutter speed i want?
Got this camera by mistake. Made some film sims here and there, but all my shots, the sky seems blown out. Drives me nuts. So I have to bring down a few expo compensation and edit it on Lightroom. The JPEGS look great tho
Can someone explain this sllllooooowllllly. I can't understand the features and benefits of this combo where you set a button to af and are able to switch quickly between snap distnace. what is the difference this and being able to map snap distance to button to switch between manual/av mode to snap.
Hi Adrien, amazing video. Thanks a lot. I am currently getting into the GR iiix. One question though: using snap in the dark is kind of impossible right? My aperture goes to 14 with a high ISO. Or is there a way?
Dear Adrien I’m wondering why when I set Ae lock as you’ve described I have to maintain my finger on the button to lock (if I release I loose the ael icon on the display) while you press once and you got it activated! This thing blows my mind. Please help me. Thank you!!
I like having quicker access to my snap distance. With snap distance priority mode it is set to one of the dial. And letting the camera choose the aperture with the desired depth of field free some headspace to focus on compositions and moments. But Snap focus only works also well!
Awesome as usual!:) thank you for beautiful video and photos. I play with “Yawarakai”, but can’t take photos like yours. I don’t understand why…😂 my photos looks flat and matt … I'm trying further😂
Hi Adrien, i discovery your vídeo and it was a blast when i was shooting! But i have a question! Why the most of my photos are in super High shutter speeds? I have my lowest at 100 and have the dial in AV mode! Can you tell why this appen? Because i feel i dont need this higher shutterspeed, the camera have some space to raise the ISO! Hope you can help, keep up the good work brother
I have tested snap distance at 1,1.5m,3m with DOF3 and focus scale says stuff should be in focus but I am continually not getting success where stuff should be in focus even at f11. Anyone know what is going on? I get tack sharp images using autofocus but want to use snap for quicker stuff. I have taken out a measuring tape and make sure i am getting 1, 1.5, 3m from subject to test but stuff seeems a little soft... it really should not be considering the depth of field with aps-c should be enough to have foreground and anything 10 feet away in focus.
Can someone please explain to me the hack he talks about starting at 2:40? I've been holding off getting a Ricoh GR but this sounds like it could be something I've always wanted: example: if you full press the shutter, it uses snap focus preset distance say 3 meters at f8, but I always thought it would be cool to be able to have a setting where if you half press the shutter to focus on something else, it also changes the aperture automatically to say 2.8 or something while still keeping the f8 setting when full pressing the shutter for snap focus. To be able to quickly go between the two is awesome
Thanks for the settings. Regards from Cyprus. I have the iiix, but for the AEL, I must have the ISO button pressed until i take the shot because if i let go of it, the AEL disappears from the LCD. Don't know why this happens .
Thanks for your comment. You have to find somewhere in the menus to LOCK the AEL with just one press of a button. By default, it is only locked when you are pressing the button but once release it unlocks
Hi - thanks so much for this video, super helpful. I have a question though. It seems that setting my minimum shutter speed is irrelevant when the camera is in AV mode - it automatically overwrites this. Is there a way to maintain the 1/100, irrespective of the mode one shoots in?
I dont have one of these cameras and wondered about the hype which touches near hysteria. However I came accross a Ricoh GR ancestor recently with a fraction of the genes of the GR. It has a different letter of the alphabet and I will not name it, suffice it to say to say if the GR lives up to the little Ricoh I have I can fully understand the hype.
Do any of you Ricoh GR3 owners worry about the "dust on the sensor" issue ? I feel like I fell iinto that hype of it possibly happening, and it's keeping me from buying one..

@@sayakakunze2394 They're amazing honestly. I think I'm kind of close being a GR only guy.
I've been using snap exclusively but had no clue about snap distance priority, this just changed my life! Thank you!
Happy to help!

Great video - thanks. Have you thought about using the U1 / U2 / U3 Presets for your “Go To” preferences?
That’s a good question. Would love to hear an answer from Adrien. 🙂
WOW tu sei stato geniale. Grazie mille dall'Italia.
The GRIV only needs to be weather sealed and a bump in the megapixel count, maybe more simulations but that’s it

Question... have you considered the GRIIIx?
Thanks! Sure, I would love trying it, 40mm sounds better for my photography but haven't got my hands on it yet

Ricoh, please make a monochrome only version.
Sounds nice, I like my color photos though haha
With the snap on priority, did you take single shot or continuous shots?
Single shot ;)
how are you spinning the central dial left to right? I have the GRIII and it doesnt spin left to right. Im missing something here.
I guess every GRIII should have a spinning central wheel

i don't recall if you say this at the beginning but you do have to update the firmware or none of this will make sense.
Yes the latest firmware is needed to have the snap distance priority mode
