- In this video you can enjoy the cab ride - train driver's view from Tirano in Italy (441 m) to Pontresina in Switzerland (1,773 m) along the Bernina Railway line. You can enjoy this video in the resolution of 4K/60 frames per second.
The Bernina railway line is a single-track 1,000 mm (3 ft 3+3⁄8 in) metre gauge railway line forming part of the Rhaetian Railway (RhB). It links the spa resort of St. Moritz, in the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland, with the town of Tirano, in the Province of Sondrio, Italy, via the Bernina Pass. St Moritz is the terminus of both the Albula line and the Bernina line. As the two lines are powered by different electrification systems, they meet at the same station but operate on separate lines from separate platforms. Reaching a height of 2,253 metres (7,392 ft) above sea level, it is the third-highest railway crossing in Europe and the third-highest railway in Switzerland. It also ranks as the highest adhesion railway on the continent, and - with inclines of up to 7% - as one of the steepest adhesion railways in the world. The elevation difference on the section between the Bernina Pass and Tirano is 1,824 m (5,984 ft), which makes it the open-air railway with the greatest height difference.
On 7 July 2008, the Bernina Railway and the Albula Railway, which also forms part of the RhB, were recorded in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, under the name Rhaetian Railway in the Albula / Bernina Landscapes. The whole site is a cross-border joint Swiss-Italian heritage area.
The trip on the Bernina Express through this World Heritage Site is a four-hour railway journey across 196 bridges, through 55 tunnels and across the Bernina Pass at 2,253 metres above the sea.

I apologize in advance, that photo is not exactly from that ride, but it was the most beautiful picture that I could find from that train representing Bernina pass in the winter time with lots of snow.
What are those wooden triangular shaped things sticking up out of the ground around Bernina pass?
@ronm3245 Those are avalanche protection.

@@RailRelaxation Sorry, but I think we're not talking about the same thing. Avalanche protection looks like nets or some other kind of barrier set up on hillsides. I am referring to small collections of what look like large bombs stuck into the ground with only their wooden fins sticking out. They are not on hillsides where an avalanche might occur, but just some here and there, without any obvious point to them. Maybe they have something to do with snow drift protection, but even then I don't see how. I was unable to find an image of them anywhere on the internet. My guess is that they are someone's artistic display and serve no other purpose.

These beauties never get old. As a railroad nut I noticed they had dropped new ballast on the south side. After the weather warms it would be interesting to know if they will tamp and level at night or have work windows during the day.

I like being a 'recliner' train operator at home watching these in cab videos and seeing the changing seasons.
I wonder how often they have to replace the galvanized beams and poles on the sides of the railways due to rust.

@Thedane2023 Yes, they do. I have never been there in spring, but in the summer is very beautiful too.
Looks like this year had very little wind. There are not the mega drifts seen in previous years (loco deep). The snow profile across the track, on the down side, shows four plow widths. One loco, one low height double blade push plow (as in photo) , 2 moving head rotary (2 passes)?

The correct name of the river is Poschiavino
Esso è lungo 27 km, gli ultimi 3 dei quali scorrono in territorio italiano. Nasce nelle Alpi Retiche nei pressi della Forcola di Livigno (Val Laguné) a 2260 m s.l.m. e percorre la Valposchiavo. Forma il lago di Poschiavo nelle vicinanze di Le Prese e passa da Brusio e superata la località Campocologno entra in Italia, confluendo da destra nell'Adda vicino a Tirano (SO).

I was wondering why this train stopped *WAY* past the station building at Morteratsch until I realized Bernina Railway RhB trains in winter can be quite long with ten cars per train.
By the way, I find it kind of strange one of the trains going in the opposite direction had a Conrad-Storz liquid petroleum tanker coupled to the back of the train. Are we sure that's actually safe?
@Sacto1654 It should be safe. I would say even safer that transport on the road.
Question: At 00:51 what does "switching to rail conductor" mean? The track looks the same (no 3rd rail) and there are still overhead wires - so what changes there? TIA.

If you watched the whole video you will have noticed that from the second third onwards there were no longer any coughing or sneezing noises...
On the contrary: sometimes you think you hear a humming sound - and you wonder whether it might be coming from the engine of the locomotive 🤔
I suspect something else: the wonderful view in the most wonderful morning weather has activated the train driver's self-healing powers and he is humming happily and cheerfully... 😉😂

Lehnenviadukt ist keine Ortsbezeichnung, sondern die Angabe wie die Strecke konstruiert wurde. Eine Brücke, die sich an den Hang lehnt. Ansonsten ist der Film super gelungen. Danke

Dafür brauchst Du erstmal ne Erlaubnis bzw. Drehgenehmigung der DB AG, unabhängig davon ob Du Lokführer bist oder nicht!
Manche der RUclipsr sind selbst Lokführer und Eisenbahn-Fans, dürfen aber nicht so ohne Weiteres drauflos filmen. Wie ich zum Beispiel vom Kanal „regiotf206“ her weiß benötigt dieser das Einverständnis seines Arbeitgebers 😊
