It's not good sportsmanship. Players would listen to these tapes over and over to learn more about each referee and see what they can get away with, rather than simply playing within the rules like they are supposed to.

As a low tier referee, we're actually instructed to have absolutely nothing to do with injuries after people are called in from the bench, and is actually supposed to go away from the incident 😅
I'm a football/soccer and handball referee in Denmark, and I looooove how these good referees use their wit and surplus to get the players on their side during the game. Jarred Gillet is a talentet as they can be, and I really hope to see him at the greatest matches very soon. The comment about keeping distance at a freekick is amazing. A portion humour and a portion serious. The player understood and the opponent accepted. All teams want a referee like that, as you can hear several times during the game from the players... More referees, and games, like this :-)
As a player I can say that any decision is so much easier to swollow if the ref communicate well and stay consistent. Some refuse to speak and start waving cards the whole game x.x

Referees and players don't have to agree about everything, but in my experience it helps in the heat of the game to just quick explain a discision and then "move on". The players might disagree, but that's okay. If a player feels his question is taken seriously, it's a lot better :-)

This shows how hard they are working. They need to make right decision in a second. VAR helps a lot because some of the details are easy to forget, the game is running really fast.
He was a youth player who never got anytime, that particular team had only won 2-3 games that year as well so I think they just wanted to get back into the game and secure the win.
This should be done everywhere and be able to hear it live in the broadcast of the game. It would eliminate a lot of arguments with the players because they will know everyone is listening in.
Really hope he has a good game this weekend. I reckon his refereeing style is like some AFL umpires, think it works well in football. Great to see players and officials have rapport and respect with each other, improves the quality of the game too.

The supporter at home can hear what the referee is discussing with players and they will know exactly how a referee came to his decision. I also like how the referee with consult the assistant before making a decision.

As far as I'm aware in the premier League the refs don't want it because they throw abuse at the players as much as the players give it to them haha
