Dear mainstream media, for the love of God, please stop saying Blue Origin's New Shepard (and Virgin Galactic's Spaceship Two) go to ORBIT or NEAR ORBIT or to the "EDGE OF ORBIT" or anything like that. Orbit is not a PLACE. It is a TRAJECTORY, determined by orbital velocity. "Orbit" is the ability to continuously MISS hitting the Earth (or whatever you're orbiting) because you're moving so fast that you run out of ground to hit. Achieving even the lowest energy orbit around Earth requires an order of magnitude more energy than what New Shepard has available.

There's a funny clip of an Australian morning show where the hosts can't stop cracking up at the look of New Shepard. Very funny, but there's a bit of a damper when the host asks the reporter how long the flight will last. She said, almost with an "I dunno shrug" that it would be "about an hour." !!!

In its odd way it is correct = SpaceX doesn't exist in the universe of sub-orbital tourists flights. It takes serious private astronauts to orbit. If they included SpaceX more in this vid then they'd have to explain the big difference between New Shepard & CAS vs F9 - which no mainstream journalist has ever done well.

"It makes sense for Starship because there is no crane big enough to hoist the upper stage quickly."
Actually, the catch tower idea is based on the desire to avoid the mass of landing legs on the booster. For one the size of SH the legs and their mechanisms would weigh a lot. Using the catch arms to do the lifting is gravy.
A smaller rocket is even more sensitive to items' mass as a percentage of the overall mass. China obviously copied the catch tower idea from SpaceX, but... once a concept is out there, copy the best.

    • @NaeroSpace
      @NaeroSpace 2 года назад +2

Space tourism began much earlier than 2021. NASA put senators in space in the 80's, mislabeled them as qualified professional astronauts by calling them "mission specialists." They were definitely tourists on a joyride to get more shuttle funding from congress. Also, Soyuz has taken up (almost) plenty of tourists as this point. Millionaires as early as around 2000 to stay at the international space station.

Are you seriously comparing the following three things?:
    1) an orbital crew vehicle (with full life-support) that transports astronauts to the ISS or operates as a self-contained spaceship on free-flyer missions
    2) suborbital vehicles that provide 4-5 minutes of weightlessness
    3) a computer render of a nonexistent rocket that is an obvious Frankenstein of Falcon 9 booster, New Shepard capsule, and Starship launch/catch tower (you have to laugh at the fact that even the vaporware in China is stolen from the West)
The video then does a detailed feature comparison of New Shepard vs nonexistent PowerPoint rocket and nonexistent PowerPoint capsule, as if this is providing some kind of insight. As a bonus, it tosses out this gem - "NASA has already partnered with Blue Origin for its launch services" - which is true only if you squint at it sideways and redefine the meaning of partnership and launch service.
This video is absurd. What are you doing, Wall Street Journal?

"Space Tourism" to really be "Space Tourism" requires at least Orbital Capability. At best a ride to a "Space Station" and possible short stay there; optimally a Safe Repeat of the "Apollo-10" Mission. Not a Repeat of the First Manned Mercury "Up & Down".

      Says who?
"optimally a Safe Repeat of the "Apollo-10" Mission."
Okay, but you just probably added another decimal place over an Earth orbital flight price.
"Not a Repeat of the First Manned Mercury "Up & Down"."
And yet we've always called Alan Shepard 'The First American In Space,' haven't we...?

Landing vertically doesn't leave much room for error and perturbation. The margin for safety could be greatly increased if it could slowly land in a hole dug within the earth with a diameter much wider than the rocket shaft diameter, lubricated with a boatload of a non combustible gel like substance to cushion and ease in the landing.

No not really. SpaceX is trying and they became very very good at refurbishing the first stage but this makes them only semi-reusable. The true ship to be fully reusable yet being actually useful will be Starship or so SpaceX and all of us hope
