    Just to be clear, you won't run into the post code issue using a retail board like what Jay showed. I mean it's possible to still get boot issues with incompatible memory for example, but for a correctly configured system you won't run into the issue Jay had, with a retail board.

    As with most 'situations' These days the Real problem is lack of communication.
    Brands want their products reviewed as they know that is where the bulk of their sales likely comes from but they Need to be sending out either production models or say so when they are not. There is a tendency these days to 'dis' something without enough information but without correct information you can only work with what you have.
    Sure Jay could have asked MSI if the board was a pre production model but he also had no reason to. The onus here is on MSI and the other manufacturers to correctly state what they are sending out for review, or bad situations like this will continue to occur.

    I don’t think manufacturers should send out pre-production stuff... as production models could differ.
    Like in games today, reviewing a game before mtx gets added.
    If this doesn’t stop with hardware now, it could evolve to the point that pre-production products show a unrealistic picture of a product, if pre-release changes downgrade the quality... not saying it will, but it could happen, depending on the greed levels... money is a great motivator for shady practices...looking at game publishers

    • @jakegarrett8109
      @jakegarrett8109 5 лет назад

      This happens so much with race quadcopters that it’s ridiculous... You’re about 95% likely to get a completely different product in the end: including different brands of components, different cameras or video transmitters, sometimes different RPM of motors, almost always different propeller types, and sometimes less than favorable power boards, sometimes even the carbon fiber is in the wrong direction in the frames so it’s incredibly weak and flimsy on the production quads. And then if they do review the new model about one month later it changes again! And these are from massive companies that sell millions of them and they don’t change their specifications or even say revision 2-3-4 etc. it’s almost always guaranteed to be a cost cutting process, very rarely does it increase the performance or capabilities.
      I hope we don’t end up with that in hardware: golden samples, k1ngp1n edition instead of regular EVGA shown, extreme factory clocks, unlimited power BIOS when the consumer ruins will be gimped... it will probably happen though.

    All this drama over a bios and “he’s a shill” , “they’re shills”. 🙄
    I like to think I’m adult enough to watch all the videos be it Jay , GN , Hardware Unboxed , Linus etc etc etc and make up my own mind based on all those opinions of what hardware I’d like.
    The biggest mistake made here in my opinion is by MSI , reviewers should have been told they were pre-production boards end of , Kudos for HU for noticing it might not be and contacting them to verify but Jay being beaten up for it is wrong.
    Personally I don’t give a crap whether hardware in my PC is AMD Nvidia or Intel as long as it works as it should , AMD has had a long history of being a bit sketchy on new hardware releases and driver issues for early adopters , that’s fine they’re a smaller company with lesser resources but if they pull some market share back it’s the first part of the company that needs improvement , everytime I’ve bought AMD stuff it’s always been a few months after release.
    Impressed with AMD’s new Ryzen and 5700 series , glad they’re finally challenging Intel/Nvidia again.
    MSI on the other hand , I’ve not been impressed by many of their products for quite some time and their latest motherboards and graphics cards have been shown wanting by ALOT of youtube reviewers.

    I think both of you were professional about it. Jay was understandably frustrated in the heat of the moment and, as he said, was speaking from an emotional standpoint.
    I do think the bigger problem here is that manufacturers haven't informed reviewers properly about the pre-production boards, and Jay's frustration with that is completely understandable.
    MSI has had a lot of screw-ups lately (including with their BIOS), which isn't good.
    Something similar that might be worth mentioning which I noticed is that (most of?) the Gigabyte X570 boards have a Thunderbolt header that was not used. However, at least with the Master and Xtreme, some early retail models and most (all?) of the review samples had the header in place... but as far as I'm aware, it isn't enabled in the BIOS, so it can't be used one way or the other.

    • @phatcyclist
      @phatcyclist 5 лет назад

      @@WXSTANG Not if it looks to be in a retail box. The entire point of a review sample is that a reviewer is getting essentially the same experience that a consumer would get buying at retail. Yes, out-of-the-box there wasn't an obvious issue, but apparently BIOS and driver updates are very common in the reviewer world. If MSI told reviewers explicitly that they were getting a pre-production item, this whole mess could have been avoided. I just bought an MSI B450 Gaming Plus board from NewEgg, with the new Ryzen 3000 BIOS already installed. Not a real issue for me because I bought a 2700x, but there was no mention on NewEgg's site and it has the same barcode as the older version. If I had for some reason purchased an Athlon (of course I wouldn't on that board), I'd be SOL. They soon after offered a Max version that has this BIOS compatibility as standard, but no where on their site was it listed that they had an intermediate product upgraded between the original and new Max launch.

    What worries me is ppl are reporting the same issues on retail board from MSI and Gygabyte. My b450 tomahawk would not post at all after flashing a new bios (cpu light on means it does not pass the 1st test, not necessarily that the cpu is bad), until I flashed it again for every version that I flashed. Some board don't have bios flashback and it just leaves them bricked. I think it should be investigated a lot further... maybe the flashing software fails? or the bios gets partially corrupted?

    Just through in my experience: tested the Aorus X570i + 3900X with lots of PCIe errors , boot issues or even BOD (with each released new bios) . It was running pretty hot as well . So I ditched it and now using the Aorus B450M. Frequencies are the same , its somewhat cooler on the Chipset and the 4x8GB Trident Z working in 3600MHz no problem. I noticed in the B450 Bios the option for 4 Gen PCIe is still enabled, so when you switch to 3rd Gen instead of AUTO or 4th Gen it also improves stability. At least for me "downgrading" to B450 was a win, board is quite cheap here and except Gen 4 PCIe no any difference to X570 regarding performance.

    I bought the MSI Godlike and have been underwhelmed so far. I built it during the cold months and it wouldn't start until I put a space heater next to it to heat the capacitors. Additionally, it's been very buggy when running, throwing WHEA logger errors which, I believe, is pointing to the system not processing drivers properly--as the system isn't overclocked. And if you have this board, I'd de-install most if not all Realtek drivers from the MSI vendor download. It even installs hidden services you can only see using the NET START command. I'd also de-install most if not all Dragon Center components.
    I'm STILL waiting on a more stable BIOS release from MSI (for AMD processor stability/compatibility) in March 2021 and this board has been out for a while.
    Since this debacle I've built another smaller gaming rig using the Auros 550 ITX and it runs flawlessly. I popped the 3600 testing processor into it that I also used to build the X570 Godlike. So, all issues point to MSI. I bought it because it had the best integrated RGB solution while Gigabyte seemed to have the worst.

    It seems strange to me that MSI would not to show where that 10k resistor is for competitive reasons, it is incredibly easy for a competitor to analyse the motherboard, laborious but easy. Just a lot of measurements, entering it in a simulator (like Multisim) and then let the software plot graphs at relevant points in the circuit and you can see exactly what happens with a minimum of effort.

      That’s actually not that uncommon for high-end boards. It’s the high-end ones that are made for liquid nitrogen overclocking, and you sure as hell don’t trust the voltage ID! You always use a multi meter when checking (unless you believe the 1,000,000 V on my graphics card… But I also don’t believe the 35 GHz that I have on another GPU-z validation.... just don’t trust software!), so they often have probe points.

    It sucks that they didn't send Jay a retail. What I request is that with a MSI b450 Tomahawk you try updating the bios and following the progress or lack there of of b450s and other boards inability to have bios compatible with the 3000 series Ryzen CPU. You're one of the guys that informed my choices doing my first build. I'd like to see how you and Jay and Paul and Tech Deals and others get through this 2nd gen fiasco. Someone needs to do a step by step ABBA BIOS upgrade and show a)how it's done. And b) does it ever work?
    At this point when I upgrade I'm not going with MSI based on the the confusion being demonstrated in their live stream. It should just be said that 300 and 400 mobos can not be compatible with the 3000 series. Just say it, MSI. I'd have greater respect if they did.

    Thanks for the video Steve! I saw both of the videos from Jay and I trust him to not have purposefully put out bad information. In fact I do not think that any of the reviewers that I follow put out bad information willingly (You, Jayz2Cents, LinusTechTips, Science Studio, TechYESCity, Paul's Hardware, BitwitKyle, Barnacles, Buildzoid, Gamers Nexus, and a few others). Personally, I agree that if a company sends a pre-production sample they NEED to tell the reviewer that it is such. Not every reviewer is Buildzoid and can tell right off the bat that something is amiss, like a testing header. I also agree to Jays honesty in releasing a video without consulting the companies first, they might give him a solution that an ordinary person would not get. But also, in this case, if he HAD contacted MSi, this whole thing would have been a non-issue. I guess it is just a complication to being a reviewer.
    I do have to say that I have had a bad experience with a Gigabyte AB350M-Gaming 3 where it was putting way too much voltage into my processor. AMD says that spec for Vcore is 1.5V and under, well that is fine, auto was giving 1.47 to my processor. However, this board was also putting 1.25V-1.3V into my SOC (if I recall they say that 1.1V is the max for SOC) on auto settings and ended up killing the memory controller. I only noticed because I got some instability and checked it just before it died (Owned the mobo/processor for 14 months).
    Being a poor college student, this is something that is unacceptable as I cannot afford to replace my processor and am now stuck using just my laptop. This makes the VM work I have to do for my IST and IPSec classes take much longer than they should. This is the reason that manufacturers need to make sure their stuff is right. Again, in this case, not MSi/AMDs fault, but these issues can really hurt individuals and companies.
    Thanks for the great content guys. Keep it up! Eventually I will have a decent job and be able to support you on Patreon.

    These honest reviews are so important today more than ever. Went to Newegg, looking at x570 boards. Wow all of the MSI boards are 4 and 5 stars and there are way more reviews than any other boards. These boards must be awesome. But wait a minute, it seems that there is some rebate being offered to those who leave feedback on Newegg. And some of that feedback is for boards that are not even x570. Yikes how disappointing is that. Reading a little deeper it seems that MSI are not the first vendor to pull a stunt like this, as it seems Asrock did it a few years ago. I am not that familiar with these board vendors today as it has been a few years since I purchased any board and am usually an Asus buyer. Anyway, if I went by reviews on the store, I would be crazy not to buy MSI. Yet, in watching videos on HUB and others, I see that in fact MSI have some of the class leading WORST boards for x570. Not much I can do about corporate practices, and shame on Newegg for letting this crap happen, but the one thing that I can do is get some honest feedback from a few sources who I trust to give me their best advice, and secondly to not buy from those vendors who try to pull the wool over my eyes. Yes I know that most vendors probably do that at one time or another, but I can only make decisions based on my experiences, as we all should.

    It's hypocrisy really, we all don't like all the hate mob/ fanboy who jump into conclusion without clear facts, yet "some" would do the same, just because they can't be mature enough to realize their position in the community and instead fall into the same "fanboy" mentality, even if that means being a fanboy to their own ego.

    • @smartroadbiker
      @smartroadbiker 5 лет назад +1

      Jay did justify why he didn't liaise, because he wanted to show the experience that we the consumers can face, not clear it up in the background and make the product look all fancy. If MSI didn't want the bad press then they should have made it clear that what they had sent was a pre-production board and then he would have known. As it was they didn't, he received a motherboard with full retail packaging and warranty card so I understand that he wouldn't have even thought it was pre-production just a retail sample.
      Even after MSI contacted them, they don't seem to be able to find the right BIOS for the board he has anyway. Some great organisation on their part...
      I do think Jay could have contacted MSI and had that as part of the original video though or said he will contact MSI to find out what the issue was. In his second video he did say it was born out of frustration which I think we all would have in a similar circumstance. Was he wrong to release the video, I don't know but MSI need to take their fair share of the blame because they sent out a product that was not what you and I would be buying.
