You've hit the nail on the head. I loved Wind and Truth. I'd say it's my second favorite of the five, just behind WoR, and very close to Oathbringer. But I love all these books, because as you suggest, they align very closely with my expectations of the books.
This thing about the lack of explanation on the safe hand combined with the amount of info on crablike creatures and canyons annoyed me to no end. I think your assessment of the series and who it's for is very much on point.
Stormlight is SO FUN. I definitely can see how it's not for everyone but the Cosmere is so fun. I agree with all your points, and am looking forward to the Wind and Truth reread in my 40's xD
I’ve been on the fence about starting this series, you have convinced me, thank you for doing a spoiler free review. I am a person the loved Robert Jordan, so I appreciate the comparison letting me know what to expect from the writing style!
I don't know why I watched this entire thing when I have already read and devoured the entire cosmere, but here we are 🤣 Agreed with all the points you made about the reading order, it's SO overblown. And I think you just helped me figure out what that little pizzazz is that I miss in Stormlight, my anthropology loving heart misses that deeper cultural worldbuilding. Anyway, amazing video!! And heck yes, can't wait to re-read it all in a couple of years 🤩
i was never able to put my finger on why despite ALL the worldbuilding, the world of the stormlight archives still feels lacking to me and you absolutely nailed it, it's the cultural worldbuilding that is really missing the mark for me i'm still trying to hype myself up to reread oathbringer LOL
That's pretty interesting to hear. I'll go through all the Cosmere anyway, so I didn't click in the video in order to *make a decision* or anything like that, but this did give me a few things to keep in mind so that my expectations are more aligned to reality, so thanks!
Its atleast not written in a dense or complex way but i think its a good idea to start with a more normal fantasy book length with Sanderson and see if you vibe with the type of projects he is interested in
Thank you for this! I actually just started with Sanderson. I was most excited to get into Stormlight but I made myself start Mistborn first. I just finished The Well of Ascension and I did struggle a bit with pacing and the way he built political intrigue. I’m not sure yet if it’s a me problem or not since I’m early into this journey. I’m just waiting on Hero of Ages to come in! I really want to like Stormlight cuz it seems like the series I would enjoy most. Normally the size wouldn’t feel so daunting but I’m still figuring out where I sit with his writing style. These videos really help especially because I want info without being spoiled, so thank you!
This video made me excited to return to Stormlight! I am at book #4 and I was getting a little fatigued by everything, but since book #2 is my favourite so far, I am lloking forward to finishing the series.
I am loving this series so far. I’m in Wind and Truth and I had no prior experience with Sanderson. I wanted to say that the audiobooks are also extremely well done, with accompanying PDFs so you won’t miss the illustrations, and descriptions of them at least in the later books for the visually impaired.
⛈️ I have just finished The Way of Kings, and it was the first Brandon Sanderson I’ve read. I can confidently say, I am having a good time! Starting Words of Radiance this coming weekend.
Can you provide a list reading order (not a video). I’m currently first in line at the library to get Way Of Kings, so will be starting soon. The GoodReads reading order did not include Mistborn, so I’m confused if/where that goes.
I think in the description of that video I put a list. Its a bit long to type again. You can also use wikipedia and see the publication order. But I would just read what sounds good, unless you are picking book 2 in a series you won’t mess up
I've never agreed more then saying you don't want people who won't like your favorites to read them 😂 I am the opposite of wanting everyone to read my favorites, I want you to have a clear view of what the series is so you won't hate what I love lmao
Hoping this video will be helpful. I tried getting into Sanderson with Tress From the Emerald Sea, and did not like it. Nothing in particular stands out. I just didn't like it. Hoping his other stuff is more my thing.
@SlowlyGoes Mistborn is a more contained first book and “only” 600ish pages so if you struggled with Tress that is probably a better low cost second try.
Such a bummer. Was that the scope got too big? I am always curious about how books 1-3 can be amazing but then 4 misses for some readers, cause for me 4 was almost as good as 2
@@messengeroddeath i think it also depends how you like to spend your free time, like I have friends who primarily play video games but they decided that if they read they want to sink into a long series and they are content to have that be the only thing they read that year. But for sure its a personal choice
@@nitzeart yea and to be fair there is more worth going into but its why I bring up that the cultural world building is potentially lacking for people depending on their taste or why they read fantasy
@LiteratureScienceAlliance Yeah, that's one of the reasons I started disliking WoK more and more after finishing it, even tho I liked it a lot at first. Sadly, I've reached the conclusion that Brando Sando books are not for me anymore. I'm still curious as to how this series ended tho, which is why I'm here I guess 😅 sorry. He left too many questions open after book 1. I also have issues with his enviormental worldbuilding in Stormlight too, even if it's a little stronger than the cultural one, because while expansive and original and interesting, it's not interconnected like a ecosystems are, including with the humans/sentient beings, and the world has no big effects of the culture either. We don't even know what people eat! Maybe this improves in the series tho?? I wanted Scavenger's Reign with Roshar, but I only got a superficial look at the world. In a series with 1000+ book in it, that's not a forgivable offence for me 😅
@LiteratureScienceAlliance Oh, as someone also with a background in physics, this has me intrigued. I still don't think the time commitment to read this series is worth it for me, but I am curious about how he handled stuff he set up in book 1, and how he handled this physics stuff people are talking about now. I didn't know it included quantum mechanics. I only heard about fusion. Maybe one day I'll find a full spoiler detailed explanation of that part only 😅 Just because I'm curious now.
@ yea I think you have enough things you don’t like that it wouldn’t be worth it but there was some cool science stuff in the fourth book that I was able to guess the outcome of because how closely it followed physics and I geeked out hard, I did have a spoiler vlog for that book but that’s the only one I have talked about heavily with spoilers
I was interested. Very. And then I wasen't. The last minites from 18:44 till the end were good. 🤔 That one sentence sounded like gate-keeping....but whatever....those who don't like character growth in a looooong series please use comment with thumbs down emoji... Why listen about worldbuilding if I can just pick book 1 and see it for myself. I mean if the book 5 is 490 000 words I do expect some worldbuilding 🤔 maybe.... maybe all they do is drink and gamble and kill someone 😮💨
Sorry that my style doesn't work for you, saves you time from watching my other videos. Luckily for you this series is heavily reviewed so you can find someone who makes videos more to your taste. Best of luck

You can for sure see the Wheel of Time influence but I think each book has more contained arcs than Wheel of Time, which I much prefer personally

Thank you for the excellent video! I’ve been meaning to get into this series for a while, but I find the length daunting. I may try Mistborn first.

Well of Ascension is my Oathbringer of Mistborn lol didn’t love the pacing on a first read and its now my favorite of the series.
This video made me excited to return to Stormlight! I am at book #4 and I was getting a little fatigued by everything, but since book #2 is my favourite so far, I am lloking forward to finishing the series.
Breaks are key for Stormlight, I think in 2020 I reread the books over 4-6 months instead of a year and I also felt fatigued.
