Yeah! I think Rubber Soul just might be my favorite Beatles record. They also hit home runs with several songs that were not even on albums--Rain, I'm Down, and Paperback Writer! Two of these were B-sides; for most bands, Rain and I'm Down would be their best material.

@@galoon I agree with you on your comment. The Beatles had the reputation here in the UK to have a 'B' side equally as good as the 'A' side under the musical direction from George Martin who is often referred to as the 5th Beatle. I remember Ringo Starr was asked in an interview about one of his favourite songs of the Beatles and he replied it was 'Rain'

For my money, Hard Days Night is the greatest: There's not one duff moment, all Lennon-McCartney originals and such dynamic performances. It never gets stale! Incidentally, I love Revolution 9! - I love the use of the last two unison orchestral notes from Sibelius Symphony 7, used 13 times ( I counted! ) - it's a magnificent nightmare which leads into the comfort blanket of Goodbye. I love Rev9!

    • @stevenleejobe
      @stevenleejobe 11 месяцев назад +2

Exactly, exactly! *Hard days night* was their peak moment in terms of pure Fab Four. At that point, it was still primarily Lennon's band--his vision, his drive. If you're really gonna be serious about thinking in terms of albums--what they meant and how they functioned in the culture--Hard Day's Night was it.

100% agree Michael… whenever I try to explain the relevance of the Beatles to non-Beatles fans I keep trying to point out what you stated here.
We’ve had phenomenons before, like Sinatra, and Elvis, and the teen idols but as Time moved on they were left behind stuck in their genre.
For 10 years, the Beatles moved the needle. They evolved right before our eyes. It was pure Magic. wherever the Beatles were on the timeline. That’s where music was on the timeline. The Beatles are the gift that keeps on giving… They are living proof that there is a God or a higher power.

Rubber Soul has always been my favorite. For some reason ‘I’m looking through you’ grabbed me and it just gets better from there. You are the first musician I have ever heard that gave it at least equal ground to revolver so thank you for that. I’m not a musician and therefore can only really on my ear and my heart. I know this album is very special to me.

“Critters!,” “Algodemons” - Michael Noland signatures, everybody. Ha! Love it.
Magnificent list. I especially appreciate Pepper not predictably hogging the number 1 spot. Rubber Soul is a great pick to top the list. It’s at that perfect mid-point sweet spot between the early energy and innocence of Beatlemania and the world-weary drugginess of the later years.
As for top 2 desert island Beatle discs, that is always a tough and nebulous choice to make. Oh man. Right now, I’d say my all-time favorite Abbey Road and, to best represent an earlier period, A Hard Day’s Night (though I’d be real tempted to go with the White Album to cheat the system a bit - and also because I love it).
    Great work, as always!

Almost totally agree except I don’t rate the “White” album as highly as you do, I’d have Sgt Pepper above it. Funny, when I was 12 the first record I ever bought with my own money was Rubber Soul. The white album is the one lauded album by the Beatles that I’ve never really been able to connect with. I just find it too disjointed.
However, I’ve recently found myself listening to Beatles for sale a lot recently, one of the albums I largely ignored for years. It gets a lot of stick, but I love their cover of Mr Moonlight - largely due to John’s raw vocal delivery.
Maybe with time, the white album will just click.

I have a bit of a problem with the granny songs which appear on many albums, like "when I'm 64'," maxwell's silver hammer", "Yellow submarine", "Obladi oblada" etc. It would have been great if they had swapped some of Paul's granny stuff for some of the awesome single material, like "Paperback writer'," Day tripper", "Rain" etc.

The problem I have with “ranking albums” by the Beatles is that if you put enough of their singles together you get probably the best double album of their career. In addition to that some of the Beatles singles of a few of their individual albums overshadow the album(Sgt Pepper vs Strawberry/Penny Lane). So I cry Au Contraire Mon Frare!

When it was released, Rubber Soul was earthshaking and changed rock music forever. The same happened when Revolver was released, and then Sgt. Pepper's, and then Abbey Road. Those guys were on another plane of existence, and no one, I don't; care how many albums they sold, ever did that and did it four times.
PS: Maybe Dylan going electric on one side of "Bringing it All Back Home" in 1965 was in that category, but the Byrds invented folk-rock in June of 1965 with Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man". Both of them were special, too.

That's a great ordering of the albums and I can see your reasonings that go with the ordering. Nice job. Keep 'em coming. I love seeing other peoples views on these classic albums!
Oh I nearly forgot: Desert island albums: Abby Road and Magical Mystery Tour...that way I have enough diversity to carry me on those lonely nights

Just finished watching the video. Interesting picks . I agree with your number one selection....Rubber Soul. For me though my number 2 album has always been The Beatles Second Album..which is the American version of With the Beatles. I believe that is one if the best rock n Roll albums of all time.
My 2 desert island picks...I think it would be Rubber Soul and Abbey Road.

Great video and insight! I grew up listening to The Beatles. One of my favorite all time bands. My two favorite albums would have to be Abbey Road, and Let It Be, with The White Album as a close third. Thank you! Have you done a similar album comparison with The Rolling Stones? (Another favorite band)

Sgt Pepper is the greatest album of all time. If you were there when it came out, no album had or has since had the same impact. I understand taking each album apart now , but I will never forget the intial response to Peppers.

Being Born in 1962, The boys were the back drop to my life. from AM radio to FM radio from Mono to Stereo from a album of songs to a concept albums from ballroom dancing music to full blown take a trip into another universe and from childhood to pre teenage puberty. I can see your ratings and because of difference in taste I would rate the top 6 in this order. 6 being Magical Mystery Tour 5 White Album 4 Revolver 3 Rubber Soul 2 SGT Peppers 1 Abbey Road. To reach this order I think to an ear never hearing a recording by The Beatles and wishing to give that listener the true trip Abbey Road has no weak tracks. Side one Come Together, Something Silly songs like Maxwell a sample of the essences of rock n roll as only the Beatles could produce. Side two the best single side of a record ever. From the reassurance of Here comes the Sun to the Tribute ending the Queen and England a Masterpiece of epic Mixing and Story telling. Seeing Paul at Fenway 2 weeks ago playing side 2 of Abbey Road affirms his belief in this being the best of the band. God Bless and may I forever be thankful that I was born in the best time to grow up with the greatest band ever bar none. My love of the Who and John Entwistle Pete Townshend Moon and Daltry can only take a back seat to John Paul George and Ringo. Again a personal thanks to God for giving us The Beatles. RIP John and George, If you never got to hear or see the Goastt of the Saber Tooth Tiger John is not gone but lives on through Sean and if only for a single album with a few track release not on Midnight Sun a trip I am glad to have taken. Love your output and input to my brain from your channel. God Bless

Loved everything the Beatles recorded but if stranded on an island I would choose Sgt Peppers album along with Sly and the Family Stones Greatest Hits, Cosmos Factory and Exiles on Main Street.

Hi Michael...I'm new to your channel but I'm really enjoying the content. I'm not done watching this ranking video but I paused it to write my thoughts on albums that were recorded in less then 30 hours. And one that wasn't mentioned was Black Sabbath's debut album - Black Sabbath. It was recorded in 12 hours...live off the floor at Regent Sound (I believe) on 8 track...with 1 or 2 overdubs of lead guitar or percussion. Then the mix took another 12 hours. So a complete album in 24 hours.
Great channel. ...now back to this video.

Great list. I jotted down my order before watching to see how we compared. Agreed with your list except I placed Abbey Road at #3. Always thought Revolver and Rubber Soul were their best. Sometimes I think Revolver is better and then switch back to Rubber Soul as my #1. An embarrassment of riches! Thanks for a great video!

I certainly agree with most of your comments as regards to your choices!
Absolutely 100% agree about “Not Guilty”, should have definitely been included within the white album.
Definitely white album and rubber soul for the dessert island!

      Thanx, Dave!
You know when I first heard Not Guilty, I don’t know, it just hit me as one of Harrison’s great tracks!
When I found out it was all set for the album up to the very last mixing session, my stomach turned!
That’s what he gets for helping John & Yoko put together Revolution #9!
And no song co-writing credit for Revolution #9?
Paul got credit for a ‘song’ that was actually ‘co-written’ by Harrison for sure!
      What a Sham, man!

Here's my Top 10 (UK) btw [I do realise that MMT is an American album🙂]:
    10. BFS
    9. AHDN
    8. Help
    7. RS
    6. MMT
    5. LIB
    4. SP
    3. AR
    2. Revolver
    1. TWA

Beatles for Sale Lp would be listed much higher for me as well if it weren’t for the poorly chosen covers. A Hard Day’s Night would be in my top 5 as that album could be considered the height of Beatlemania.

One of the nice things about comments on social media is you get to share your opinion which may be quite different to others. I was born about the same time I Want To Hold Your Hand was released in the USA and I grew up in a house with Beatle music in it. I tripped out (listened to stared at) the Revolver album (cover) for hours as a kid and it's still probably my number 1, but retrospectively I really like Beatles For Sale. Yes it contains a few covers, but that is a like an homage to their origins as a band before they became world famous, and is indicative of those nitty gritty small venue shows in Hamburg and the UK. To me it's just pure honest rock and roll (songs like Kansas City). Then original songs like "I'll Follow the Sun" are just brilliant. So personally, my favorite Beatles songs are not likely to be on the "Greatest Hits" album with songs that get played over and over (Hey Jude, Let It Be) I've heard those enough for one lifetime, but I prefer the stuff that got a bit less airplay but still capture the Beatle magic.
