Mike have you heard of the analougs? Look them up on RUclips. It’s a Beatles cover band from the Netherlands. They do the whole Sgt Pepper and white album. I was blown away!
I an with most of yours: Beatles, Purple, Zep, Floyd, stones, Elton John. There I have to add the Doors, Cream, steppenwolf, Sly & Family Stone, Santana, jimi Hendrix (all incarnations), Jefferson Airplane, Creedence, Renaissance, SRV band(s), Buddy Guy, Humble Pie, Traffic, aerosmith, and ac/dc and Joe Cocker (all iterations). Honorable mention to Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, Mountain, Johnny Winter, simon and Garfunkle, and Mamas and Papas. Now you’ve got yourself headiners for the rest of eternity,
Interesting list. Mine would be as follows (in rough order depending upon how I feel on a particular day): 1. The Beatles 2. Led Zeppelin 3. Pink Floyd 4. Steely Dan 5. The Doors 6. U2 7. The Rolling Stones 8. The Who 9. The Kinks 10. The Velvet Underground 11. Roxy Music 12. Genesis 13. Yes Some solo artists have had regular touring bands and studio musicians even though they are largely classed as solo artists eg Paul McCartney & Wings, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, David Bowie. These would probably displace two or three of the above if allowed.
Beatles don't belong in any live list. 1) They usually had a 20 minute set, played for only 15, and left. Lame. 2) With their early audience mostly braindead, screaming pre-teen girls + amps and speakers were garbage = couldn't hear the band anyway. Double lame. While The Beatles are the most iconic band of all time their wasn't any virtuoso musicianship to see live. No lightshow or pyro. No effects. No mood changes. Just 4 moptops bobbing their heads to their bubblegum audience. Triple lame
I just wish there was more footage of The Velvet Underground live. Sometimes I wonder who was playing rhythm and lead guitar when I listen to the albums or live recordings. Lou or Sterling?
I have my favorites ranked by the decades. 60's--The Doors. 70's--A toss up between The Who and Zeppelin. 80's--Another toss up between Metallica and The Police. 90's--Smash Mouth with Primus running a close 2nd, and after Nirvana's "Never Mind" I was in AA and not really listening to much music after that.
What a great list! I like these bands, but we are all individuals; here is mine. #1. The Beatles. My parents are from Liverpool, enough said. #2. Pink Floyd. Do I need to explain it? #3. The Police. The band I grew up with being born in 1968, and attending school in that important ten to sixteen years of age. #4. Led Zeppelin. #5. Rush. I am Canadian, and the older I get, the more I love Rush. #6. The Doors. The 80's resurgence of the Doors was right when I was at that age. #7. Iron Maiden. The importance of their work in the 80's, and the memories of that era are intertwined. #8. Love and Rockets. Bauhaus are touring again, Peter Murphy is great but the guitar work and tempo of Rockets is just fun. #9. Gary Numan. If it was just memories then he wouldn't be on this list, but he has come back with a vengeance. Brilliant. #10. The Tragically Hip. The Hip provided the soundtrack for my twenties. #11. Deep Purple. One of the three formative bands, the metal grandfathers (Sabbath is on my Hon Ment.). #12. The Who. They seem to be the red-headed stepchild of the British Invasion, but they were great, and Daltry can still belt it out. #13. Queen. Just so many tracks, so diverse...a band that grabbed the matel, arena, hard rock, and top-40 crowds, at once! The honourable mentions are funny, I am sure that in a year, some of them will have replaced, some in the list. Black Sabbath, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Daniel Lanois, Brian Eno, Primus, The Clash, The Cure, The Pixies, The Cult, Ministry...and at one time, U2...they just got so smug....and there are many, many more.
Well done on deciding your top 13. I could never undertake such a task but at my advancing age, i have recently 'discovered' a Polish band Riverside that has completely turned my musical life upside down. For me Ozric Tentacles, Mahogany Rush and Budgie were always my top 3 bands but i think Riverside might be entering that competition.
There's alot of good Polish Eastern European bands. Something heavier Polish Band "Bantha Riders". Ukrainian band Ignea - "Alga" song. Female singer and they split their songs between English and Ukrainian, alot of good tunes. Moldova "Seas on the Moon" - The Regress (video isn't much, but the song is fantastic!) w/Lena Scissorhands (also Moldova). It's not so much a band as 2 brothers writing the music and having guest singers. Really good. And Lena is one of my favorite female singers right now. Greece "Villagers from Ioannina City" - "Age of Aquarius" album. Entire album is great, and I think best rock album of 2021. They also have a great live concert filmed in Athens also very good. Also sure your familiar with Uriah Heep - "Outsider" album from 2014. It's really solid, alot of good tunes on it. I'll check out Riverside. Thanks.
great video. in my opinion, uriah heep would be on a hardrock mount rushmore if there were an exclusive mount rushmore for 1970 to 1972 (dp mk2, zep, sabbath and heep).
Gary more a great rock band on his own ! Parisian Walkways - wow! And don't forget The Kinks - but they have so wide a choice of genre - hard to fit in to just one on it's own - as well have having probably the greatest guitar riff of all time in 'You really got me.'
When it comes to progressive rock I will take the Moody Blues over Yes any day because the Moody Blues didn’t have to do whole album sides to make their point. They made their point in four minutes with the exception of Nights in White satin. They had more of a pop sense too
Yes didn't make songs to take up an entire side to make any point. That's not the intention. Close to the Edge is a maginficant song that is 18 minutes but has elements The Moody Blues couldn't have done. I would take Yes any day because they had a pop sense; but prog rock wasn't about that. The Moody Blues didn't have the talent Yes had; nor the ability to change direction yes did from the late 70's into 90215 in 1983.
@@j.dragon651 I respectfully suggest that they very much had a point, it's just that you missed it. Regardless, Yes vocals are just another instrument, or colour, on their palette that they created their diverse and changing soundscapes from. When I listen to (particularly Yes Album through to Drama) Yes, I'm immersed. I rarely even perceive the lyrics through the sounds. Beautiful. Oh, and I like the Moody Blues, but they don't quite reach the eminence of Yes.
The Who. Santana, Aerosmith, Cream/ Derek & Dominos. Allman Bros. Neil Young. Black Sabbath, Grand Funk Railroad. Johnny Winter, Jimi Hendrix. Never even heard of Kattu. Never been much of a Queen fan, especially after 1977.
I recently revisited Klaatu. I had heard their first record at a friends house shortly after it came out and was mildly entertained but after a revival of interest I picked up that record for the first time not long ago. I became hooked and made it a goal to acquire all five albums in vinyl record form. ("Hope" is currently my personal fave but I really love all five!) Literally yesterday as of this writing I received the final piece of the puzzle which is Magenta Lane! These albums were not cheap, especially Magenta Lane, but I felt it was important to have all of them in vinyl record format as they were initially released! Apparently ML was a half speed master release. It doesn't say that on the record but it was sold as such and priced accordingly on Discogs. When I look at the different releases of this album, there seems to be only one vinyl release and it is described as Half Speed Master. Is it true then that if you have Magenta Lane in vinyl format, it can be assumed to be a Half Speed Master? I know it sounds amazing on my system! I also absolutely LOVE Badfinger and I currently have 3 of theirs. "Straight Up" is currently my fave. It's just a perfect record through and through!
I agree with most of your list, Zeppelin for sure but I would switch out a few and put Rush in my top 10 and AC/DC for their impact alone (not a huge fan of their repetitive style), and also Black Sabbath for their impact on heavy rock and few truly great albums. Secondly, I have not read any good reviews of the MUSIC on the Motley Crue tour. All reports have been about Drama and stage stunts. Not surprised
Wow man glad you had klaatu on your list always loved that band and Tull too and sorry you left out Emerson lake and Palmer and UK,did you like Allan holdsworth ? Loved those cats lol lol 😝
Hard to argue with any of your choices. I would be interested in your views on the bands in the San Francisco psychedelic scene: Big Brother and the Holding Co, Jefferson Airplane, It’s a Beautiful Day, Grateful Dead.
You've got this wrong as well! The 13 are: The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, The Who, The Velvet Underground, The Doors, The Byrds, Joy Division, Television, Nirvana, Patti Smith Group, The Mothers of Invention
Those are some excellent picks brother. I would put the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Midnight Oil (not to sound like a broken record) Paul Revere and the Raiders, Men At Work(Even tho they only did 3 albums) T.S.O.L. and Redhot Chili Peppers on my list.
I'm in 100% agreement regarding Glen Frey, I love the eagles, but after the hell freezes over comeback, he changed, especially with his treatment of Don Felder, there are times in interviews when he can't even mention the guy by name, yet right up to Frey's death, Felder was nothing more than complimentary to him.
You hit it again .I went to a show and all I saw was lights . I paid for a Disney vacation instead of 🎶 music. I left about fifteen minutes in . I thought I was going to have vertigo.

My top bands: The top two have been locked in for over 50 years. The rest move up and down in the rankings. 1. The Beatles 2.The Who The Doors The Rolling Stones The Jimi Hendrix Experience Led Zeppelin Lynyrd Skynyrd Cream / Blind Faith / Derrick and the Dominoes Pink Floyd The Byrds Santana Honorable Mention: The Funk Brothers (Motown) The Wrecking Crew ( just about everything These bands played on more hits ,and more #1 hits, than every other band I mentioned combined . The JB'S / The Famous Flames (James Brown's legendary backing bands) Booker T and the MG'S ( Stax/ Volt)
My Top 13 Greatest bands of all time: - The Beatles - Led Zeppelin - Rolling Stones - Pink Floyd - Queen - AC/DC - Guns N' Roses - Metallica - Black Sabbath - Iron Maiden - Nirvana - Jimi Hendrix Experience - Genesis
Alice Cooper is a great band that had an emotional impact on me at 18. Glad you listed Jethro Tull, I saw their first 7 American tours. Seems The Who and Kinks could have been included especially how they influenced many other musicians. Also, give the Who special mention for their rock operas. Never heard of Klato (?) so I'll check them out.
Hey Mike, I feel lucky to have seen about half the bands on this list. YES, The Rolling Stones, Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd and Steely Dan. But, IMVHO you have left out a few of my faves that I saw live multiple times, specifically Grateful Dead, Phish and Aerosmith. I know tastes vary, but I still like them. I'm sure others will not approve of my choices, but hey, that's just too bad. I'm sure I would not like some of their choices. That's ROCK AND ROLL!!!
Great video. First love Tull I think I’ve mentioned Tull first concert I ever saw 72 thick as a brick tour with Gentle Giant opening. Saw Purple in 74 Burn tour first tour with Coverdale Hughes lineup. Saw Cooper twice 73 New Year’s Eve muscle of love tour & first welcome to my nightmare tour. Love that you mentioned Uriah Heep Gary Thain & Dennis Dunaway from Cooper group are two of my main inspiration as a bass player. As far as light shows it should be used to enhance not overshadow the band but I also don’t want to see a band stand there staring at their shoes. As far as the Eagles love a lot of their stuff but like you got tired of some of the bullshit. Funny thing is Don Felder was responsible for their biggest hit Hotel California & wrote one of my faves Victim of Love. Steely Dan very consistently great. Great bass playing on their albums too.
Any list I would make would have to choose The Beach Boys, due to their output and their ability to help change rock music. One would also think about choosing Metallica, who inspired an entire generation.
I liked the Beach Boys - but i never understand why people say they "changed rock music". Not criticizing you, but never got it. Loved Good Vibrations - never saw it as groundbreaking.
“Billy was a Mountain, Ethyl was a tree growing off of his shoulder”. Album: Just Another Band From L.A. I’d spin for all my visiting friends back in the day, I initiated some of them to Frank Zappa.
I was waiting to chastise you Michael for not including Jethro Tull...me bad ! A tip of the hat to the Elton John band of the early to mid 70's as well. Crazy Horse has helped Neil Young produce great albums for decades as well. Finally The Who is on the same mountain as the Beatles, Zep and Floyd !!!!
My top five favorite bands are Radiohead, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Foo Fighters, and Kings of Leon. Fifteen favorite albums which are three favorite albums by each band are OK Computer, In Rainbows, Hail to the Thief, the White Album, Revolver, Rubber Soul, Led Zeppelin IV, Led Zeppelin I, Physical Graffiti, the Colour and the Shape, Echoes, Silence, Patience, and Grace, Foo Fighters (Debut), Because of the Times, Youth and Young Manhood, and Aha Shake Heartbreak.
Aerosmith"s first five albums were great. Aerosmith"s s/t debut "73 Get Your Wings-"74 Toys in the Attic-"75 Rocks-"76 Draw the Line-"77 They were one of the greatest rock bands of the mid-late 70s, but as far as being one of the greatest bands of all time, would be tough to say.
Love your channel (there's more meat in here than in the competition!). I agree with your choices, and will have to check out Klaatu -- never was aware of them other than being wannabe Beatle clones. Sadly missed The Who and The Doors, they would have merited a place here (Black Sabbath are too specialized). And the top three will surely remain unassailable.
Yup .Beatles & Led Zeppelin. First album I bought in California on Ft. Ord was "Some Girls." Love the Eagles. Friends of mine paid $400 a ticket in 2006 to see them in Salinas at the Rodeo Grounds.
I am new to your channel and so far I love the way you go about your picks and your in depth explanations of why you make your choices! I am wondering, in a category like maybe "best live band" or just in general ..What are your thoughts of Cheap Trick?
Hey! You Rock! I read a bunch of the comments on this post and I realize the A&R guy from Virgin that said 'There are about 500,000 XTC fans on this planet." must have been right. If you like Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Police, you got to check out some XTC. The finest band Swindon has ever produced. Start with Skylarking.
Been a "Klaatuner" since 1976...fave album is 3:47 EST...1980's Endangered Species is runner-up...their song, "All Good Things," helped me thru the loss of our family dog that year. I do hope that younger generations will discover the wonder and playfulness Klaatu engendered. While Top 10 lists are fairly opinionated (I'd have Rush and U2 on my list), I like how you explained your reasoning.
Another great show! It's amazing how we have the same taste in bands. Must be a boomer thing. Great segment about using the audience as part of the light show. It is interesting to study the evolution of the concert experience, not only for the technology during the show, but the overall changes in venues as well. New venues are now designed for comfort, I believe, for the boomers, by the boomers. I could talk for hours on this subject.
1. The Beatles 2. Led Zeppelin 3. The Rolling Stones 4. Pink Floyd 5. The Who 6. Jimi Hendrix Experience 7. Queen 8. AC/DC 9. The Doors 10. Black Sabbath 11. The Eagles 12. Alice Cooper 13. Deep Purple
I got to watch the video for Estranged by Guns N' Roses being filmed. I worked a block away from where it was shot at the Roxy and saw Slash flying around on wires. Pretty cool night!
There's no way you can leave The Who off the list of the top 13!!! Pioneers in many ways, talent, songwriting, and explosive live shows!!

Got all their live dvds best Beatles tribute band out there. Phenomenal.
Agree 100%! Utterly amazing Beatle covers!
Badfinger and Grand Funk way overdue for the Rock n Roll Hall of fame!
My lucky 13: Beatles, Stones, Who, Zeppelin, Ten Years After, Jefferson Airplane, Deep Purple, Santana, Cream, Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, Yes, CSNY.
Needs The Who to be complete
"If you don't have The Who, you don't have a list."
I agree! Everybody knows that The Who are a great live band.
Now you’ve got yourself headiners for the rest of eternity,
Hey Michael, I would substitute the Moody Blues for a couple of those you chose, like Deep Purple, ELO, and Klaatu.
Interesting list. Mine would be as follows (in rough order depending upon how I feel on a particular day):
1. The Beatles
2. Led Zeppelin
3. Pink Floyd
4. Steely Dan
5. The Doors
6. U2
7. The Rolling Stones
8. The Who
9. The Kinks
10. The Velvet Underground
11. Roxy Music
12. Genesis
13. Yes
Some solo artists have had regular touring bands and studio musicians even though they are largely classed as solo artists eg Paul McCartney & Wings, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, David Bowie. These would probably displace two or three of the above if allowed.
No Queen?
I don’t want to be a pixel, either, Michael! (Not even Disney is Disney any more.)
I’ve seen live pretty much all of these artists , except the Beatles. Out of all of them Queen are by far the greatest live band ever.
I wouldn't have Queen in the top 10 I've seen (post Freddie and with respect to May and Taylor).
I agree , I saw Queen with Freddie 3 times 😉
Klaatu, Captain beyond, moody blues...awesome bands
Well done on deciding your top 13. I could never undertake such a task but at my advancing age, i have recently 'discovered' a Polish band Riverside that has completely turned my musical life upside down. For me Ozric Tentacles, Mahogany Rush and Budgie were always my top 3 bands but i think Riverside might be entering that competition.
I agree with you about Riverside found them 4 years ago and every album is awesome. Enjoy Duda etc.
Riverside are fantastic, but don't have the notoriety to influence enough other musicians to make a list such as this. Still highly recommend them!
Thanks.
@@johannjohann6523 many thanks for all this info. Will investigate your recommendations. All the best to you.
great video. in my opinion, uriah heep would be on a hardrock mount rushmore if there were an exclusive mount rushmore for 1970 to 1972 (dp mk2, zep, sabbath and heep).
Klaatu deserves WAY more attention than they're getting at the moment. Their first 2 albums are hard to beat, especially Hope.
They had more of a pop sense too
They were also easier on the ear.
They were my go to group when i would drop acid
Yes didn't make songs to take up an entire side to make any point. That's not the intention. Close to the Edge is a maginficant song that is 18 minutes but has elements The Moody Blues couldn't have done. I would take Yes any day because they had a pop sense; but prog rock wasn't about that. The Moody Blues didn't have the talent Yes had; nor the ability to change direction yes did from the late 70's into 90215 in 1983.
@@flexiblestrategist9922 they really had no point. They made the lyrics up as they went and they basically meant nothing, it is just free association.
There is NO WAY that THE WHO should fall out of any rock and roll's Top THREE all time bands much less the Top 13. You must have never seen them LIVE.
Klaatu is in my top 10 as well! Excellent record production
Thanks for mentioning my favorite Band.....
Steely Dan(and The Doobie Brothers) 🎶😎🎶
Aaaahhhh RUSH?
Calling Occupants is the "ringtone" on my phone and Sir Army Suit possibly my fave album of all time.
Totally agree on Klaatu. Been a fan from the start. Terry Draper and Dee Long have a large discography worth checking out.
I discovered Klaatu in the 1980s at a used record store! Great stuff!!
Wow man glad you had klaatu on your list always loved that band and Tull too and sorry you left out Emerson lake and Palmer and UK,did you like Allan holdsworth ? Loved those cats lol lol 😝
ELP Rules !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hard to argue with any of your choices. I would be interested in your views on the bands in the San Francisco psychedelic scene: Big Brother and the Holding Co, Jefferson Airplane, It’s a Beautiful Day, Grateful Dead.
From Australia, A little love for the great TEN YEARS AFTER wouldn't go astray , Peace from down under.
Men at Work made 3? I thought it was just 2
I spy...a Sonic Maximizer in your rack! Great piece of kit, and great video! :)
Cream only had four albums-not “eligible “. The Who should have been on the list.
You hit it again .I went to a show and all I saw was lights . I paid for a Disney vacation instead of 🎶 music. I left about fifteen minutes in . I thought I was going to have vertigo.
I'll give this one a crack! This pertains to these band's heydays.
13) King Crimson
12) The Doors
11) Camel
10) Yes
09) The Rolling Stones

07) Jethro Tull
06) Banco del Mutuo Soccorso
05) Genesis
04) Pink Floyd
03) The Kinks
02) Van der Graaf Generator
01) The Beatles
Note - If Neil Young and Jimi Hendrix qualify make this a top 15 list. Bubbling under - The Who - The Guess Who - Deep Purple - ELP - Gentle Giant - Marillion - Le Orme - Cardiacs - Premiata Forneria Marconi
My top bands:
The top two have been locked in for over 50 years. The rest move up and down in the rankings.
1. The Beatles

The Rolling Stones
The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Led Zeppelin
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Cream / Blind Faith / Derrick and the Dominoes
Pink Floyd
The Byrds
Santana

These bands played on more hits ,and more #1 hits, than every other band I mentioned combined .
The JB'S / The Famous Flames
(James Brown's legendary backing bands)
Booker T and the MG'S ( Stax/ Volt)
For some reason I never think of the Experience as a band...only ever think of Jimi as the whole thing!
Klatuu and Badfinger are on my list and I enjoy all of their albums. ELO I only want to hear their greatest hits.
My Top 13 Greatest bands of all time:
- The Beatles
- Led Zeppelin
- Rolling Stones
- Pink Floyd
- Queen
- AC/DC
- Guns N' Roses
- Metallica
- Black Sabbath
- Iron Maiden
- Nirvana
- Jimi Hendrix Experience
- Genesis
The WHO is #4 before the #5 Stones!- Impossible to exclude...
Hey Tribe Chief, would include Nazareth also. Hair of the dog album is a classic!!! Keep on truckin!!!!!
Great choices!!!
Wow I better check out Klaatu as I’ve never heard of them until now. Thanks Michael
I'm be 65 on October 26th. I agree with you a lot on bands. I love STYX. I love your Beatles & Led Zeppelin lights. You take care!
What about Rush 🤔
Aerosmith"s s/t debut "73
Get Your Wings-"74
Toys in the Attic-"75
Rocks-"76
Draw the Line-"77
They were one of the greatest rock bands of the mid-late 70s, but as far as being one of the greatest bands of all time, would be tough to say.
The Big 3-- Led Zeppelin, The Who and The Rolling Stones.
Great video Michael. I agree about richie he's always in my top 5 somewhere but every time I hear highway star from made in japan he's no 1 again
Seeing Klaatu is actually what drew me here.
Love your perspective bro! 🤠👍
Come on, no rush. Damn
Yup .Beatles & Led Zeppelin. First album I bought in California on Ft. Ord was "Some Girls." Love the Eagles. Friends of mine paid $400 a ticket in 2006 to see them in Salinas at the Rodeo Grounds.
You're on fire tonight Michael.....like always!
🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥
Glad you didn't 😉😉
1. The Beatles
2. Led Zeppelin
3. The Rolling Stones
4. Pink Floyd
5. The Who
6. Jimi Hendrix Experience
7. Queen
8. AC/DC
9. The Doors
10. Black Sabbath
11. The Eagles
12. Alice Cooper
13. Deep Purple

I got to watch the video for Estranged by Guns N' Roses being filmed. I worked a block away from where it was shot at the Roxy and saw Slash flying around on wires. Pretty cool night!
Beatles stones zeppelin floyd who ...5
Live stream and membership!!! Can’t wait
I'm down with Klaatu but let's fit The Kinks in man!
Definitely! The Kinks are a top 5 band for me. So underrated
Coldplay has never been anything more than a Disney Act so it makes sense
