That's gonna be an uncomfortable sing-along for fans at the live shows
I’ve seen them play live on their hella mega tour and they don’t even play their new songs.

I like the song
As Ben Franklin once said there are only two certainties: Tik Tok and taxes
its not impossible to pull off satire this obscene, but it had better be pretty goddamn clear cut what you are saying, and not a vague throwaway line. This is like if Jonathan Swift wrote about eating babies in general as an excerise in being edgy and transgressive, instead of pointedly making it the british upper class consuming Irish babies
listening to modern green day is 95% wishing they'd do something less safe and generic, and 5% monkey paw curling
😂😂😂😂😂
What?
True
@PotatoKing86 Monkey’s paw is a classic popular horror trope/urban myth about a monkey’s severed hand that grants wishes. Every wish you make, a finger curls in, and you get a twisted version of your wish, technically granting what you asked for but in a way that’s meant to make you miserable.

this reminds me of that "animal predator busted in boise" video by joel haver where their lyrics are all about being attracted to animals but they're all super surprised when the singer actually gets arrested for lewd actions with dogs.
I would also take advantage of the American dream in it's early stages.
The lyric easily could’ve been
“we’re all perverted for the American dream…”
You know what? Actually this sounds better.
Doesn’t rhyme with “into the wild” tho
Ironically, this isn't the first time Billie Joe uses the p word. It shows up in Warning, on the track Fashion Victim, but crucially he's not incriminating himself there ("cloaked in style for pdf files" vs "we are pdf files"). Honestly, I think he's just sayin' shit at this point.
I get it
I think you’re missing the point. Billie isn’t saying that he is a pdfile, he’s talking about how sick and grotesque it is that Americans are chasing the American Dream that doesn’t exist.

“The American Dream said she was over 18, officer. I swear I didn’t know.”
~ Billie Joe Armstrong
On the one hand, this may be a literary allusion to Lolita, in which the titular character is sometimes considered analogous to the “young, up and coming” USA being lusted over by the old Nonce of Europe.
On the other hand, what the actual fuck is wrong with them, at least Sting managed to make his as an incredible rhyme in part of a creepy as all fuck song, not “HELL YEAH NONCING AMERICA” *AFTER YOU ALREADY SAMPLED GARY GLITTER LAST ALBUM*
This was the first stream I’ve ever caught and this song is the first thing I heard and I couldn’t stop laughing my ass off the more the song went on lmfao
where is the pdf file for the american dream? that is a quick edit.
A good example of a striking political line by an old but still somewhat active band is from Nine Inch Nails' Bad With Trilogy, with the lyric "You can always justify the missle trails across the sky."
Isn't that line from the song Less Than?
Yep. Good song as well
@@javiers5599 indeed

Melon really should keep a neutral spine when doing those upright rows. Looking downward can move the load forward and can damage your shoulders.
I'm starting to think that maybe their last album wasn't bad on purpose
It was never confirmed that the album was bad on purpose. That's just something people made up, like trying to justify it.
@@DanielCh9393 Yeah, I know, I was referring to the theory, not stating it as if Greenday said it themselves

Both Paul *and* Ringo are vegetarians, and they’re the two surviving members of The Beatles.
Coincidence? I think NOT!
John never went full vegetarian but George did and he died of cancer.
The lesson? Eating meat will get you murdered 🤷🏻♂️
Both of them are left handed too
And Ringo's middle name is 'Paul' and Paul's middle name is 'Bingo'.
It's too much of a coincidence, I agree.
Man if only John ate his vegetables he would have survived a gunshot
They all were veggies, I'm pretty sure. George definitely was
I dont think its that gigatic of a deal tbh. But the pdfphile lyric definitely is a eyebrow raiser just in the idea of it not making any sense, and it just feels like it was just thrown in there to turn some heads.
I don't think it's that gigatic of a deal either, tbh. Although I'm not sure I know what gigatic means
I just see the simpsons version of them in my head every time I hear their music and I think it's fitting

If the meaning is "the American dream is so outlandish that you need to be an idiot to fall for it" (which I'm PRETTY sure that's what they're trying to say), then I still think this is the wrong way to express it. Yes, American nationalism is a dumb ideology. But find another way to express it.
green day's development over time as a band is kind of like muse except they never had any musical development. just weird vague lyrical stagnation. like even aside from the pdf thing the lyrics are boring and empty and the music could easily be recycled from 21st century breakdown, while sounding like an attempt to remake holiday
I think he could be referencing politicians being pedos but i really don't know... He didn't have to say it like that
I thought the song was decent..... Until I had this lyric pointed out.
I enjoyed the song a lot has some people say this is definetely American Idiot inspire which is not a bad thing for me since I enjoyed some hits off that album. But they couldn't just avoid that american dream we're pedophiles type of lyric. They for sure fuckin did that line just to create controversy and make people roll their eyes.
I'm sure they did.
They did that way better 20 years ago, and didn't sound like shit.
"Literally anything else? How about necrophiles"
Typical Melon. Making a living on hating things I like
Couldve been a generic political song by Green Day except when they try to act more deep with lyrics like "Tiktok and taxes" 😂
What the actual fuck 😭
when they say "we" they aren't just talking about the band greenday, they're talking about Americans in general. and yes they use pdf rather than just say horny or in love because those words just means you are attracted to something, where as they are trying to say that Americans have a SICK (emphasis on the sick) obsession with the American dream. honestly astounded by how a simple lyric has gone way over everyone's head apparently. there is a good critique of this lyric in that it's not true anymore, the only people who still have an obsession with the american dream are baby boomers
Still a dumb line to sing, one can only laugh at it. God forbid people critique it for that. He clearly understands what they tried to say but it’s such a generic statement about Americans that the only way for the band to make it interesting is to throw pedophiles cuz they watch a Moist Critikal video on EDP or something. A “how do you do fellow kids” moment so to speak.
@@robotman5105 ah yes because pedophiles have never been covered before edp

Obviously the lyric means that we are a person who is sexually attracted to children the ideal by which equality of opportunity is available to any American, allowing the highest aspirations and goals to be achieved.

But how in the fucking world we can even ignore a line like this.

They already did that almost 20 years ago with “Maybe I’m the fa**ot America” on American Idiot. That was also a lot better than this.

all i'll say is, thank god you're not the lyricist for green day. i'm getting second hand embarrassment from your comment, ngl.
Either they're trying to make fun of libertarians or something else lol. "Tik Tok and Taxes" and "Pedophiles for" seem so on the nose.

what did green day mean by this?
I dunno. After listening to Father of all a bunch theres a lot of solid tracks on there. But its all couched heavily in that Green Day manner of rewriting old songs into modern conventions. Which BJA is super into, constantly pulling riffs from the 60s and 70s into songs.
To me if youre into that sort of vibe, about 60% of that album is great. The other 40% is undercooked as is standard fare for a GD album.
My only complain about the newest songs is that they're just *fine*. They bop, theyre fun to drive to. But ultimately ill forget about them.
Just as good as any other green day song
So none of the artists you like have outrageous/controversial lyrics? Every time I look on here, you're reviewing a band named Cannibal Corpse or some shit. I guess those bands get a pass???
folks’ commitment to “edgy” shit is just so ugh. like give it up
so what you cant say this word?
I’m sorry but this video just proves that Green Day will never do anything correctly in Anthony’s eyes. He went from “hey this isn’t too bad” to “lol this fucking stinks” over one lyric not landing.
