  • In this video I start stripping the broken gearbox off the car, ready for its upgrade to a used JDD Gearbox.
    Furthermore, I also remove the EGR Valve and ECU to be sent off for some modifications.

    Love the video , seeing this makes me pleased I messed about with cars in the 70s and 80s, I swopped a 3 litre capri gearbox in an evening after work, and managed to change the big end and main bearings in couple of evenings with the engine still in the car..things were some much simpler then , and didn't have all these electrical gizmos to worry about..makes you wonder if it really is progress, or just a ruse to make people not bother to repair cars and just buy new..I certainly wouldn't bother at my age now to be underneath a car in the outside, but nice to see younger people doing what I did in my twenties instead of just relying on paying a garage

    Watching somebody else's pain is so relaxing. Having to do all that on your drive is really quite something. I also like how every time you are draining oil the wind blows hard in both directions to make sure it misses the catching can. All in all top work. Keep it up.

      It’s always such a still day, right up until the oil is pouring! Every time! Thanks for the kind words.

    I did a clutch change on a 2007 Beetle last year so I feel your pain. Mating the gearbox to the engine is like docking with the ISS. It is a good feeling when the gearbox is finally reunited with the engine.

      They’re a nightmare to work on those MK4 based beetles. Engineering that body to fit the Golf platform left some annoying access issues

    The n/s (short) driveshaft I am pretty sure it will drop out once you have removed the big nut in the middle then the six inner cv joint bolts. That may give you enough room to drop the box out. However, for a little more spanner work the whole n/s suspension can be removed, strut too. Good work 👍

      Yes, on mine I removed the n/s driveshaft by undoing the big hut and inner cv joint bolts.

    I thought I worked hard as an inner city secondary school teacher (I did) and dreamed of doing other work for a living. You work very hard, with deadlines. I've done a clutch/flywheel change on my own 4x4 and even without deadlines it was hard work. Good luck with this A2, someone will appreciate the effort and buy it at a price to cover your input. After watching the vid, I would.

    Well, that’s a good day’s work. It’s so hard taking things off, knowing you’ll have to put it all back but 9/10 you’re saving trouble.

    Another great video. Well done, I admire your perseverance. I particularly like the "buy a Range Rover" comment.
    I have changed a couple of clutches over the years, but mostly rear wheel drive, a Capri and XR4i, which were relatively easy. As a teenager, I did help my dad change a clutch in a 1980 Mini Metro, which was no were near a difficult as the A2.
    I look forward to the next instalment. 😀

    Heroic effort ! Given how interested you are in fixing your cars , with all the knowledge you already have and your willingness to get out and do the work , I reckon all that's holding you back is your work environment ! Is there no way you could get access to a garage / workshop /inspection pit ? Great content as always 😀

      Thanks John! Well that would be the dream. Maybe if my RUclips career takes off 😂. I feel like most people only have a driveway and some jacks tho, so hopefully it encourages others to “have a go”

    Bloody hell - I bought an A2 in July 2020 - who knew they could be such a nightmare! I don't have the skills (or money) to fit a bunch of extra stuff. I now know exactly where I'm going should the need arise!

      @@TyredFormat if find it's a left-over from the prototyping stage, they just never seemed to finish that car, it was so unique within the marque and so over budget they split didn't finesse the end result. Unfortunately from a technician stand point, it certainly shows!

    • @TyredFormat
      @TyredFormat  2 года назад

      Absolutely. As someone who’s a design engineer, and have dabbled in automotive stuff, ultimately it’s the bean counters that introduce compromise. For better or worse! Fact is this shares a lot with that Polo chassis but has a completely different construction so it was always bound to have problems ! Haha

    Good work so far. This stuff is always trickier when you're lying on your back using axle stands. One thing that I would have done is to replace that input shaft oil seal. I always replace them whenever I see one during a dismantle as i) they are dirt cheap and ii) they are sure to fail as soon as everything is reassembled.

    • @TyredFormat
      @TyredFormat  2 года назад

      Did the seal on the gearbox side, probs should’ve done it engine side. No bother… such an easy job can’t wait to do it again 🥲

    Hi, After replacing the pressure plate and clutch pressure plate, how to adjust the clutch pedal in the Audi A2 ?

  • @MrAlphafang
    @MrAlphafang 2 года назад +1

    Hi Jason matey. Can I ask why you didn't use an allen key in the drop links bolt ends? Hit it with the dugga dugga gun then lock it off with the allen key and use a spanner. Not like I ever resorted to the grinder before I noticed you can lock the bolt off with an allen key before. 😉🙄😂

    • @TyredFormat
      @TyredFormat  2 года назад +1

      I did try the Allen key but it just rounded off 😂. It’s honestly a good job most of this car is Aluminium, as all the steel suspension bits look like they’ve been fished out of a canal…

      @@TyredFormat 🤣🤣 Recently I was invited to have a look under a 2016 Range Rover sport whilst it was on the lift. All it's suspension parts were bright orange. We live miles from the sea and the owner didn't launch boats with it. Never seen rust like it. Your A3 looks new underneath in comparison. Stick at it buddy.

    You might find it difficult to refit the gearbox with the drivers side driveshaft flange fitted , 7mm allen head bolt removes it
