Followed your detailed description and have successfully managed to sort my stiff gears. Thanks for taking the trouble to film and add the video. My old tower exploded like yours as soon as I removed it! Cheers.

Many thanks! Im glad people get some use out of it. Not the nicest job in the world, but can make the world of difference!

I always enjoy a trip to the scrap yard. Please take us along Jason. You never know there may be a gearbox out and just waiting for you to liberate it...

Just found your entertaining channel and subscribed, I love watching people suffer the agony of diy car repairs having done so myself since 1988. A tip, always undo the fill plug before the empty plug, not that it mattered here, and VAGs hate anything but the correct clean coolant, yours looks manky and as I found to my cost it turns solid in the heater matrix then it’s no heat and dash out to fix. Ps love the RR and the A2 but not brave enough to have either.

Thanks Rob! In this case, I was removing the entire shift tower so always knew I could refill it. It is however good advice to always remove the filler first!

Hi Jason. Before spending any more money on the gearbox. Experiment with using "double de-clutch" method when moving from 2nd gear into 3rd and again from 4th to 3rd. It may help ? You just have to train your Brain to remember when to do it.
If it don't work, then it's open your wallet time (again). See you in the next one. 👍👍

Doesn’t seem to make a difference. The box also does it warm as well as cold! So, new gearbox time me thinks. For now I’m just leaving the grind life into 3rd. Any new box I buy will get the new shifter mech installed anyway

Thank you very much! When I push my engine I have a noise from the wires that goes from the gearbox inte the car. There is a rubber clamping pieces. How can i put grease to stop the noise?

Could have mentioned the female spline headed bolts holding the select tower to the gearbox and what size they are

I learned something new today as I didn’t realise the gear selector tower could be removed like that. Good design. It’s quite common for the crunch going from 2 to 3, especially if you try a ‘rally style’ gearchange. Although yours does seem exceptionally bad. I know of a standard tdi75 gearbox in the Bristol area in good condition for £100.

Hi, we have new single flywheel and clutch fitted, and now reverse is a real cruncher to get into gear. Our mechanic is a BMW specialist. I know I should find an Audi one really. Any ideas please? It's the 1.4 TDI se 90 hp. Many thanks

Assuming that gearbox is beyond help, investigate the JDD five speed or else if you can stretch to it a later six speed PTW from a CAYC engined car along with the better starter motor from that car. Your ears and engine will thank you on long journeys!
Either way - You'll replace the dogbone mount I'm sure (assuming that's what you meant by "that's shagged"!) - you want the polo part (Febi part no: 31113) which is 40 quid off eBay as the A2 one is NLA and very expensive when you can find one; whereas once you've swapped the mounting plates from your old mount to the new then you have achieved the exact same thing

Thanks for all the kind words. Funnily enough I’ve secured a JDD, and a remap. So in the next week or so you’ll see a bit of a transformation!

Gear synchro on third gear is worn out. Pretty common.

third is overrated as a gear in my opinion

Third gear in the tdi75 is wonderful! From 10mph all the way to 60!
