I found a Evolution S17 on eBay, and it's pretty good.
The locking knife on a Swiss Army Knife is a great improvement.

Great review, thanks! I have the Evolution S17 and been using it since the summer. Initially I felt the bulkier scales a disadvantage, but after using a while, I really enjoy the ergonomic contoured scales. It just feels great in my hand that far outweighs the slight bulkiness. I have the Victorinox Huntsman which is also a 4 layer, and I like the feel of the S17 much more, and it's a little lighter which is another advantage.

I like the Wenger can opener for EDC 'cause it's good for opening boxes and ripping into things without mucking up your blade. And one good thing about the Wenger awl is it's safer. I've gotten some nasty cuts from the Victorinox awl. The Victorinox awl is superior in general, but for EDC purposes I'm cool with the Wenger.

Nice video and excellent, concise descriptions.
I have the Evo 23 and S18, among other SAKs. For size and practical use for me, that design has become a favorite of mine. I find myself preferring the 23 due to the magnifier/small flat head screwdriver, but the S18 has its own attractions. I am using the magnifier more now as I am making a few tiny repairs to some of our Christmas ornaments this time of year, but I can see myself grabbing that for a variety of activities. I live in the country, so the saw gets a lot of random use outdoors.
In any case great form factor, perfect size, not too big, not too small, and a nice selection of tools makes those two quite favorable to me.
I know there are some differing opinions on the blade lock for the S18 (or any of the Evo series where the model number is preceded by an “S”). I am definitely in the camp of those who like it. But I can understand why some do not. But it works well for my uses and is one of my favored blade lock designs besides the emblem release in my Ranger Grip.
    Thank you, again. Good job.

Excellent points - I have a few Wenger knives, all of which use the scalloped scales (two Walnut, one standard red, and a couple with the rubberised grip). I too appreciate the combination of Vic and Wenger tools in the later Evolution series (I particularly like the Evo 23), but from a tactility point of view I think the Wenger versions with the shaped scales are the nicest of all. They don't have the steel liners on the inside of the scales that Vic have added, which makes the Wengers slightly thinner, without the rough edge along the scales on the back side of the knife. The walnut ones are particularly nice in the hand, and the 2 layer one works well in a pocket. I'm not typically a fan of fat SAKs, but once you go beyond 2 layers on these Evo knives I think you might as well go for 4 or 5 layers - they're still nice to hold and easy to use.

    Hm, interesting!
I have 2 Vic Sportsman, but on both the nail file looks different. It is facing the blade, but it's file is like the Wenger and Evo you presented, so it doesn't scratch the blade.
The older Sportsman i have is from the late 80's, the newer one (my EDC) is around 11-12 years old and one of the models with the darker red nylon grips.

Really wish they would consider a modernized option, or Americanized you could say. They could take the cadet for example, take away the mostly useless can opener and replace with scissors and add a pocket clip. Also take away the cork screw and parcel hook as they are just not really useful for EDC tools, I don't think an emergency parcel carry or wine opening really happens these days. That said I love saks but am moving to custom options since they always seem to be just shy of perfect. The rambler in Alox and a little bigger would be the perfect edc.

Yeah very nice looking when closed I always think 🤔, I love both but the delemont is very nice . I like the fact that the magnifying glass on these models is cased in metal, but victorinox use plastic which I really think 🤔 is not nice . I do however prefer the inlaid emblem on the victorinox

I don't know if it's only my knives, but all of my Victorinox knives are sharper than my Wenger ones. I'm not a big fan of Wenger's serrated scissors either. Also, Victorinox's awl is far superior to Wenger's as well, with an edge and a sewing eye. However, I do like Wenger and wished Victorinox had simply continued to make them as they were, instead of creating a blend of Victorinox-Wenger knives.

    • @markcoffman494
      @markcoffman494 2 года назад +1

I agree I don’t like how they blended both companies into one knife however I think it would be an issue if they marketed the older Wanger knives As their own.

Good review good points ! Have you noticed how light these feel in the hands ?
I have the evolution 14 and it seems weightless? Dare I say cheap ? But has good quality build but why are they so expensive?? Are Victorinox marketing them as premium products? I hate the scissors of Wenger though! Always have ! The way they cam up and down bugs me and they are prone to jamming also in my experience?
