The Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este is the most prestigious car show in the world, and Jason just attended for the first time.
As always, it's about the cars first, but this show differentiates itself from the big American show, the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, in some significant ways.
Jason and Hyphen discuss the show, the old cars, the sounds they make, and of course the beautiful new BMW Coupe Touring Concept, which made its debut at the stage. And the Hyundai Vision N74 Concept, as well as the production BMW XM SUV.

This helps as much as putting bullet proof vest on someone, two days after they were shot dead.
@@eedesign878 So what you're saying is I should shoot the editor dead? Noted. I mean, as punishments go, that's a little severe. I was just gonna make fun of him a lot.
@@JasonCammisa please don’t, you would kill the most talented dog (who ate the sounds earlier).
Thank you Jason, love you Jason.
Hey all, SO SORRY about the audio inserts - we're working on a solve right now. The editor's dog ate the audio file. HANG TIGHT!
Thanks, Jason!
Still a great episode. Love the TZ2 Simon Kidston brought up.
Obviously Derek’s clap is the cause of the issue! 👏
Wir müssen das hören! BITTE!

Jasons video inserts of the GT40 not having sound is the biggest tease of this podcast thus far
I thought youtube broke when that video started without sound :(
That was painful!
Nah, a 100 episodes of being teased on this Piech stuff is hands down the biggest tease so far...this is a close 2nd though
Check out the newest upload for all the sounds
Thank you Jason for providing sound clips withouth sound😂
Jason maintains his title for the best vocal reproductions of car engine noises on the internet. Hyphen may edge him out on tech specs, but nobody vrooms better than Jason.
Also no audio for the insert videos :(
I don’t hear it either
The video inserts for the car sounds were AMAZING.
We love electric cars and enjoy _not_ having to listen to these old pieces of strained steampunk trash.

Great stuff. But the GT40 video are missing the sounds. ahah :)
40:12 When you get parenting advice from 2 people with 0 kids between them and yet it is on point! 😂😂
If I had it my way, all teenagers would learn with a manual and tell them to learn to love it
@@joepafjiga9015 when I was young and getting my license (somewhere that is not in the US) everyone had to test on a manual. Later in the late 90s or early 2ks, they allowed auto cars for testing but then restricted the driver to autos only. These restrictions finally ended in the 2010s I believe...
People always talk about how quiet EVs are. I am gonna show them this GT40 to prove once and for all that combustions engines can be even quieter!
If you thought SUVs were dumb in America with your massive roads. Imagine how utterly stupid they are in small cities in England. In certain situations they block my view of traffic signals when behind them in my tiny 17 year old A3
People in the US are in an arms race to be in the tallest possible vehicle so we can always see over one another. My sister's like sitting high off the ground because they can see better and have some sense of security (????) It's literally absurd.
Yeah I thought I escaped idiotmobiles when I moved from TX to UK. Come to find out SUVs and trucks appeal in the same demented ways, with about half as much road to accommodate them.
@@andrewyanowsky7219it makes normal people feel better when you sit higher up and selling a car is more about how they feel then what it actually does
The Z4 shoe looks wonderful - would it sell? Probably not enough. Would it be a future classic? Hell yes
Thought it was just me
They're only making 50 iirc. Bummer but the z4 coupe is a hidden gem.
The Carmudgeon Show started like barely 2 months after Ferd Piech died. We need an episode on him!!!
30:19, 31:30, 32:57, 34:28, 35:41, 36:01 (which i'm assuming were for sound) have no sound. Still some beautiful cars. Jason did a very faithful representation of the GT
I don’t hear anything either

I feel pranked by those inserts
Monterey Car Week is the most insane 'real 'life' car show I've ever seen. One evening I parked next to a perfect Bentley Blower (1929? 1930?), and I was about to get out of my rental car, a 300 SL convertible parked on the other side... I basically saw more rare and amazing cars just driving down the road in a week than I would have if I visited every major automobile museum in the world.
Ironically, my favorite car all of all time is the 540K Special Roadster (with the 'duckbilled platypus' covered tail, which hides the spare tire in the rear and of which only 6 were made).
Not gonna complain about a free carmudgeon video - but maybe a compilation of all those currently silent video inserts could be posted later separately (less work).. Thanks !
A bit of Isdera pedantry: the Commendatore had headlights from the Porsche 968, not 928. Similar popups, more streamlined.
BMW Touring-Coupe Concept
42:49
That Z4 touring would be interesting.
The only "current" BMW i would actually contemplate about buying if it were around the pricepoint of the "normal" Z4. (As someone with severe Pollen allergies, cabriolets are useless to me anyways. I could open the top from late august to early april...so a cabriolet doesn't make sense in my case)
As for car "shows" i think the one i would actually want to visit somewhat would be the "Festival of Speed" in Goodwood. But i don't think i will ever make it there, even though it's on the "same continent" i live on.
As for startup sounds: the funniest experience i ever had was at a clasic rallye in Gröbming/Austria. Where Derek Bell was driving a LeMans Porsche for a few rounds around the village among others for a special show. And before that, on our way walking into the village center, the Porsche was standing on the road, and the techs were preparing to start it. At that moment my parents, my cousin and myself were standing behind the car. 5-6m behind it, we put fingers in our ears and were prepared for it to get loud. Nobody else seemed to have anticipated what was going to happen...Two boys, maybe 8 and 12 were stepping off the sidewalk onto the street maybe 1.5-2m behind the Porsche, completely unaware...
I have (to this day) never seen anyone jump so high from being "jumpscared" as these two boys did! And the size of their eyes...😂
The event in Gröbming is probably a small one globally, but i have been there 2 or 3 time 20 years ago and i have seen People like said Derek Bell, Stirling Moss (with his wife), John Surtees (drifting onehanded in a W125 on a public cobble road with spectators on the sidewalk. And with the free hand he waved to the people), Rowan Atkinson, Walter Röhrl.
And i will forever think back about seeing them actually drive their cars! (And as fellow old Mercedes nerds you know what i mean when i say i have seen and heard the original 722 there once.)
They even named a roundabout after Stirling Moss there, as he once missed something and his car slid into and got stuck in the midst of the roundabout during one of the first times he drove that classic rallye. He was a very good sport about it.
I daily a VW Sportwagen TDI manual but I love having a SUV and truck. I have a Silverado 3500 for towing and truck stuff and a Grand Cherokee Ecodiesel for bad weather, little more room, and when I just have to sit in traffic and want to be comfortable. My sister had always driven a car and planned on getting another car but when her car started acting up she drove my mom's Town & Country then my Grand Cherokee. She doesn't care about vehicles but after sitting up higher that's her highest priority on what's she's buying soon. I love driving my cars but I completely understand the SUV and Truck demand.
Already listened on my phone via apple’s podcast app no sound bites, relistened here hoping maybe RUclips got sound with the images, and no dice.
When Jason gets this fixed I will be listening to it for a third time lol
Think you're right about the ease of access thing with old folks, Jason. My Dad just bought a VW T-Roc unfortunately, and he won't stop going on about how easy it is to get into and see out of, the old fucker.
Oooo...grab the popcorn for the next episode!!! Pablo is gonna be in so much trouble in it - camissa is gonna skewer him good for the goof in edit; will be epic to listen to! 🤣😂🤣
I would kill for Jason and Hypen to do an episode about Isdera and all the beautiful cars in their opinions. I think they did it, but it was earlier on, but I can't remember it and I want another episode
Hyphens reaction to the price tag on the BMW compared to the 52.7 billion dollar (rounded to the nearest 52.7 billion dollar) Datsun 240z is gold.
Even smaller car events can get kinda overwhelming these days. I know it doesn't compare to Villa d'Este, but I was just at the Petersen for their Japanese Car Cruise-In, and I think I saw maybe a fifth of the cars I wanted to check out. The rally up to Santa Paula was pretty fun, though.
20:30 that would be true if there was no hood or front on SUVs. The way SUVs and Pickup Trucks are styled currently acutally gives them far less visibility than a normal car.
The high hood means that small people and kids get obstructed and can easily be ran over without knowing theyre even there.
LMAO! DTSs response to $179K BMW price tag! Excellent!!! 😆😆😆
Make no mistake about it @jasoncammisa, your gen Scirocco was not a Giugiaro design. The Curmudgeon show taught me that. Thank you.
It’s true. In its current concept/rolling lab form, the Hyundai N 74 Vision has roughly the same dimensions as the Dodge Challenger, give or take 1 inch here and there
Is there a version with proper sound? The one pinned by JC is the exact same URL as this one... And there's nothing on the Carmudgeon's profile.
On the GT40 if you look at the headers you will notice that the primary runners cross over with two of the LHS and two of the RHS primary runners combining into the LHS muffler and the other primaries combining into the RHS muffler. This is why it sounds like a flat-plane V8.
This header design was known as the "Bundle of snakes" or a 180-degree header design.
Please do a whole episode on the Mercedes/bb/Isdera CW 311!
The Isdera Imperator started as the BB-Mercedes CW 311. That one appeared in the cheesy german comedy "Car-napping" (1980) together with other cool cars. Watch it!
Why doesn't sound on the inserted videos work?!?!
The new 5 series was also presented live to some people at the Villa d’Este, wondering if Jason saw it and what does he thinks of it ?
Hey VW boy- How about an episode about the amazing and eceltic Westphalia? Stretch your horizons and talk about the cult status the T2 and T3.
A whole new world of collectible cars that not only have seriously appreciated but also get used by their owners. Just because they aren't sports cars doesn't mean they don't matter!!!
Craig (no accent) Yope from Saint Clair, MI
God it’s criminal that BMW is not making that Z4 shooting brake a REAL production car (not a 1/250 $250k) car. If that was at $75k I would buy it but not a penny more. Gorgeous, I LOVE WAGONS, see my name, and a manual coupe wagon would be incredibleeee, take my money, but 1/250 $250k is a crime
I’d trade my G80 Comp for it immediately if it was like you say, $75k and manual.
@@zacharystokes ya honestly that’s probably why it won’t be a mass market car, because it would cannibalize their halo offerings. In reality it wouldn’t, a product like this is usually pretty niche, but them not building this is sort of an admission that this really is better than 90% of what they’re putting out right now, and the press would certainly say that, so that’s probably the real reason.
Anyone else getting zero audio from the inserts?
Can we have an episode about tuning. I think Derek was the one who said in the last episode that he likes to tune his cars 1.why? 2. Reliability 3. All new cars are around 200- 300 bhp why would you need more than that?
I think acronym is the word you’re after
Luc donckerwolke his best design for me is the Alfa Rome 2uettottanta conceptcar.
Derek (referring to BMW): "stop making shit-on-able products!" LOL
It's driving me crazy that Jason's clips have no sound! And sound is all he's been talking about!
2 episodes to Piechpisode
All we are saying, is give Piech a chance.
When Derek gasps @52:12
You’ll never convince me that swapping a classic to electric is an improvement. If the original motor sucked there are tons of swap options that improve the car without cutting its heart out.
Moment Motors here in Austin will EV convert your 2002 and will retain the original transmission. They’ve done all sorts of conversions, including a couple of 2002s.
Acronym is the word you’re looking for @ 26:00ish
JASON how could you tease us with videos of the GT40 and NOT HAVE AUDIO.
dear editor plz add time stamps one day plz

did someone say Piech????
I love the Ferrari FF but I was told recently that in some circles FF stands for “Fist Fuck”
Mannn when Jason said "Or not piss people off," I 100% said "fuck 'em" in my head... immediately followed by Derek saying the Ameeican way is "fuck 'em, they're not me" 😂😂😂
That Zed 4 Touring? Yes, I too think it's attractive. As a 'shooting brake'*, its proportions seem just _right._ Yes, aesthetically it is better than the Zed 3 hardtop. That's for several reasons, including some of the regular Z3 convertible's exterior design elements.
Compared to the Zed 4 E86/hardtop? Pretty much a redundant pursuit - the latter is a mini-wagon, the former a genuine (and quite lovely) coupé.
HOWEVER, (to me) this new coupé/wagonette/tour/hunt-turret/shoe/van thing, is deeply compromised by the *nonsensical window area.* At least the Zed 3 actually had glass around the extra occupant/luggage space!
(* _Surely,_ the silliest and/or most archaic vehicle variant name.)
I can't wait when ep 101 come out before ep 100 for the podcast LOL
Would Goodwood be considered one of the best? It’s cool seeing a Type 35 racing up a hill. Lol.
Goodwood
The pain in DTS's voice when he heard they cut up a nice 2002 for the EV conversion...
For someone who speaks German without an accent, Jason pronounced "Ingenieur" suspiciously Frenchly.
After listening to this entire conversation, I can honestly say that I don't know what it was about.
I am hoping that when Gen Zers grow up they willl reject the SUVs much like people ditched the station wagons.
I don't understand SUVs to be fair. Much less $170,000 ones.
Jetlag is nice, isn't it? Went from Germany to Japan and back the second time recently and it just wrecks you for days.
not Goodwood on the list??

Well, the ruined sound killed it for me. Just check your crap before you post it. Seems pretty easy to me, but, what do I know? See you guys next week, but if anything is not corrected before you post it I'm done, if you don't care enough about our time to make sure stuff works, then I don't care what your thoughts are. Looking forward to a better production, that you guys are clearly capable of, next week. I'm sorry, but I would rather you be a day late and have actual production values, than be just another YT channel that doesn't value their viewers enough to watch something before its posted. Really hoping for better, because I truly love this discussion we are all having together, and I hoped you two did as well. Have a nice day gentlemen.
SHE DO 100 ON MY EPISODE UNTIL I PIECH.
I'm not sure SUV's are what the market wants it's just the only thing they can get in the USA. Just came back from 2 weeks in Europe and the variety of cars on the road there makes me sad to live in America
Yeah I wonder about this as well. SUVs are heavily marketed in the states to the point that you rarely see a car in commercials. Once in a while you'll see a Camry sprinkled in with their SUVs and trucks in a commercial. Probably to remind buyers that the Camry is still alive... for now.
As the owner of a Z3 Roadster, former owner of a Z4M coupe, and aspirant to Z3M Clownshoe ownership, I hate hate hate what BMW have done with this new Z4 Shooting brake concept. How out of touch with their fandom are they to not realize the reaction that car would provoke? And, to then give the middle finger by tepidly suggesting they could do 50 @ $250k. Why not 100 @ $125k? Or a couple of thousand at some price less than $100k? Open the order books today, start taking people's money, keep the factory open until all the orders are filled. What the heck is the problem BMW?!
None of the GT40 videos have any sound Short Change Sandler! What the actual fuck Bud?
This whole podcast was about great sound you didn’t let us hear. not cool😢
Please change the intro jingle, it pains me
Not going back to PB now...thanks for ruin ing Vila d'Este Jason ! Not enough hotel rooms around it ! Camping anyone ?
Jason, you can't tell Americans that SUV's are, gasp... hatchbacks. You're going to collapse the car market.
