Oh I know I’m late to the party here, but I still remember how groundbreaking this video was when it first came out in the late eighties . Having Elvis sing an octave lower from over the original track and seeing the set go from B&W to colour every time he’s kissed blew my mind in the most eloquent and profound way . A golden era of music videos !!
I watched this last night and it just about broke my heart. I truly understand that kind of loneliness. Some years ago my husband told me we could no longer have a physical relationship. I didn't know that it would lead to everything ending-kissing, hugging, everything. And I can't leave because he has been diagnosed with cancer. But it is still a lonely life. So I understand the tears because I've cried those, too.
Growing up my dad had a VHS tape of the Attractions’ greatest hits through the 80s and this was one of the music videos contained on the tape. I could never understand it, the slow burn of the song and the fleeting intimacy of the video until I rediscovered the song in my 20s. Easily one of the group’s most emotional songs in my opinion. Never gets old
The guy is a legend. That piano in the middle, then the chord change is a total knock out. This is one of my favourite Elvis Costello songs but there are many more.
I cried when I was 22 and i cried at 56. And yes i found love, left love, had love walk away and had love die. And here I am wanting to be loved again.
el scientifico Same. Cried at 21 when I got married in 1980, cried again in 2019 when my beloved husband left this world after 40 years together and I'm still crying. Miss you my sweet Danny Boy! 💔
Kassandra Ayala When you been married 40 years. That's wtf love is. We had been through it all. Marriage, first house, recessions, unemployment, second house, losing grandparents, losing parents, losing siblings, sickness, health, fights, making up, retirement, old age. Circle of life, and it was good.....
I was in my gym’s coffee shop and this song came on, had me hooked before it even hit a minute. Luckily Shazam picked it up even over the noise. I’ve been listening to it all evening now. Isn’t it incredible when you discover such an amazing song that has been around for so long that can reach your core just like that?
My first Elvis song I heard was "Alison" and then a live version of "Watching the Detectives" in 1979. I was 17 and young and black at Boston University. I finally saw him live in Hamburg Germany at live performance of 'The Juliet Letters'. This video, which I'm sure he conceived it. I've never scene it until today. I just balled through the whole thing. He knows what his art does and is about and I just want to grow up to be like him... or similar... maybe when I turn 60 in 18 months? THANK YOU SO MUCH ELVIS!
@David Dennis For the exact reason that you think Color doesn’t matter. How many black Elvis Costello fans were around at Boston University in 1979. Of you think there is colorblind ness then you are not blind you are racially ignorant. I can say what I want. I’m Black you’re not so what?
I remember watching the video for the first time in the 80s. I didn't see it. I watched it, riveted. That video was so different from anything at the time. Allison was a great new heading for Costello, but this song and video were a huge leap. It's that brutal honesty that got me. I remember wanting to hug him after :) And of course, relating...
Purely a unique and brilliant video, one of the very best music vid imo. The music is mesmerising. I was such an Elvis Costello fan back in the day. Love the guy at 1.50 😅😅
I remember being deeply affected by this video when it came out. Imagine this playing in between Duran Duran and Kajagoogoo. I connected to the lyrics and the images in a deep subconcious way, and it always stayed with me.
Why must I be so lonely? When so many people pass me by I've been waiting for oh so long now And yet I'm unable to answer why I can't be made to give up now Can you find room for me In your heart somehow? I wanna be loved I just wanna be loved I guess I'm a victim of loneliness But why should this be my destiny? A foolish man for a lot of my life Shouldn't there be someone Someone for me? I hope and I pray some happy day That I'll be around to hear you say I wanna be loved I just wanna be loved
This song is still outstanding in 2021, and an awesome heart wrenching video. With all the happenings in the World at the moment, we ALL need this. ❤️🥲
Wow! Thirty years later we are still struggling about rights for diversity and against racism. A visionary, a genius and a sweet guy wrapped in a cool packet. A simple and profound declaration of principles made early on. Whatever discussion is on, I'd always take Elvis's side. A hero artist!
@Harry Harris i have feelings for you can we please make out i’ve had enough of waiting you said we would get married in the spring you lied to me what’s a man to do when his fiance won’t stop being a dickhead in youtube comments sections why don’t you pay attention to me anymore harry, don’t you love me ? no i won’t put the gun down, i love you, i love you, i love you, i love you, forgive me, i love you, god it’s everywhere, i love you, i’m sorry
< Huge EC fan. I have no idea why I never heard this song before it came over the in-store music at a Savers a month ago. Believe it, yes! It sounded like Elvis, but I had to do a "what song is this" search on my phone to find out for sure. Another masterpiece from the pop Master himself.
Poignant and touching. It's one of his best videos because the concept is simple and the plea seems genuine. And the addition of live spoken vocals over the recorded track is especially endearing. I've never heard the original and don't wish to. I know it won't be as good as this version.
I’m a late bloomer. I grew up with his music but somehow I never noticed how damn cute/nerdy-sexy EC really is. Damn! I love him. Though based on this video, that would do little for his psyche...still I would love him so hard!
In his autobio EC writes about shooting this video in Australia. (I didn’t know it was first covered by Teacher’s Edition.) His first marriage was ending and he had other issues at the time, so the tears he shed were spontaneous and real. Audio from his singing on set is intermittently added, making the video kinda moving.
Back in ´84, I was 17, and I tried to immitate Elvis Costello in front of the mirror, but nobody kissed me, but my mother came into the room and she said nothing... Then I loved this song even more until today... Thank You! Love is all you need!
I was 19 then when this was in the charts in June and July 1984,but it somehow reminds me of leisurely days out in London that summer. His long run of hits from Watching the Detectives in 1977 through to this seemed to dry up after this song.
@Elvis Costello from a teenager to some kind of a man your music has been a constant and resonated at different times in many different ways, thank you
The only song I loved of his. Masterpiece. Oh, and him doing that song at Cafe Nervosa on Frasier. Seriously, love this dark song. Very deep. I am as addicted to this song now as I was when I first heard. Haunting.
I love it too and now my daughter has followed my musical taste, even though I'm an old man. Gutted that Elvis cancelled the concert in Plymouth this year but hopefully he will return.
Yep, if my X'er memory isn't failing me I think a lot of the kissers were Melbourne musos, which the reason a lot of them have a certain look. Absolutely brilliant being a teenager in Melbourne in the Eighties. Best live music scene in the world back then. Edit: ...IS the reason...
My interrpretation of this song/video? Elvis bemoans the lack of love in his life. He is constantly offered love by myriad people, but he never reciprocates - he wants to get but never gives ... hence the lack of love ... How many of us are like this ...?

I wish you the best :-(
Hold on tight, goof
You really don't have to stay. It sounds like he wants to be alone anyway... Just quietly pack your shit and go.
sounds like it's time to ditch out.. have you since this first comment?
Growing up my dad had a VHS tape of the Attractions’ greatest hits through the 80s and this was one of the music videos contained on the tape. Criminally underrated song!
this is the cutest elvis has ever been. what a great video
I love Friday
Currently reading his autobiography ("Unfaithful Music And Disappearing Ink") and I had to check out this viddy. Great tune.

can you believe i'm crying at this very moment, and i cired when i was 20 and heard this song for the first time?
@Elvis Costello Ditto, over and over and I can now watch it at 55 with warm feelings in my belly at last...
And everyone has felt like they’re been in Elvis’ shoes in this video - Sad 😞 and obvious to someone who might like to love ❤️ them!

1:51 is the best one, he doesn't even kiss Elvis. The man just kinda smooshes their faces together and looks concerned.
This is just the most beautiful song ever written.
Severely underrated album. Such a thing is mad.
One of the Greatest Music Videos of All Time. EC & The Attractions Rule!!!
This is one of the cleverest, best directed videos ever.
I'm sure I'm not the only one to notice, but I love the fact that this was filmed at Flinders St Station, Melbourne, Australia 🤓👍❤️
Sure was, one of those rail guys walking across the screen at the end is a customer of mine .

Why is he usually such a over-the-top actor, but here he manages to portray despair and loneliness so well and so sublely
Divorce. Didn't have to act.
He was in the middle of divorce you're right. But he admitted he cheated on her and broke her heart. He was responsible for his marriage ending
曲も名曲だが、PVも秀逸。人生を凝縮していて、しかもシンプルなアイディア。素晴らしい。
What an ICON .... so much talent ... I can only hope that my song by Space Boy ... hang on ... someone's at the door ......
Who is the director? Do you know?
Love the color change with the kisses!!
Plus the singing then none and the emotion !

AN ABSOLUTE LEGEND THE LYRICS TO EVERY SONG SO TRUE IF YOU LISTEN TO THEM PROPERLY IT'S MAKES ME WONDER IF VERY KNOWS WHAT OLIVER'S ARMY IS ABOUT
This song's real good. Wish I knew what to call this music. Very smooth and romantic. Love the saxophone.
Been trying to find this great old tune for years and so glad i found it at long last, great song
Who couldn't love Elvis?
Been an Elvis fan since he was the 1st concert I ever saw. Never heard this song or seen this video before today. It's beautiful.
What a genius.
It's a cover, check the song writers and the 'Teacher's Edition' from 73
do we not all truly want to be loved!!!!and is there ever too much love!!
Brilliant. Just watched the demos of My Brave Face with McCartney. EC is such a versatile musician.
A great video, and underrated song.
I love Elvis and this is one of my faves
A song suitable for this era
Amazing song, video, & artist.
Probably the most beautiful video ever made. I remember he stayed awake 24 hours before filming this so he would look tired

Doesn't get enough airtime and will always remind me of walking along Gorgie road on a hot day in 1984!

One of my favourite vocals by EC..
Thank you kdhx (Doug Morgan) for turning me on to another classic! Love Elvis more the older I get.
Elvis, is the Man.
One of the best music videos ever made
The last 30 seconds was filmed at Flinders Street Station, Melbourne, Australia.
Wow! I always thought this was some grimmie station in London! Thank u!
The whole video was shot at Flinders St. mate. Had me photo taken in that booth many times. 😉😁

Elvis is King~!
This is the first time I've seen this video since the first time I saw it, way back in 1990.
God is love.
A bit of Trivia this is Flinders St Station in Melbourne Australia
Video art way before it's time ❤
What a record!
Who's listening to this during social distancing..?
Me!!
Green Gartside really makes this song.
Really? He noticeable but not that prominent. When he sang backup here, he had yet to make his first decent album.
I had no idea he sung on it👍
Steve Nieve makes this song. I can barely hear Green Gartside and I'm a Scritti Politti fan.
Top 10 videos to watch to feel something, anything
All of New Orleans loves you. True dat!
I think this is definitely Elvis Costellos best song but you will never hear it on radio or TV for some weird reason.
Yeah, because though it is a great melody and vocal performance, the production is classic eighties synth/drum machine garbage. Unlistenable.
I love it too and now my daughter has followed my musical taste, even though I'm an old man. Gutted that Elvis cancelled the concert in Plymouth this year but hopefully he will return.
3:38 - Is that Nick Cave, coming in on the left?
Yep, if my X'er memory isn't failing me I think a lot of the kissers were Melbourne musos, which the reason a lot of them have a certain look. Absolutely brilliant being a teenager in Melbourne in the Eighties. Best live music scene in the world back then.
Edit: ...IS the reason...

Love this song one of his best
Wow! and I also heard this today on a French radio station. I hope Elvis is still getting royalties.
This song is actually a cover. I hope the original writers are getting the royalties. But I doubt it though.

Thank you Elvis ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I was not expecting this.
I’d kiss him!😘
Id marry him
¡Un temazo!❤
Under the clocks at Melbourne’s Flinders Street Station. An iconic location.

GOTIGERS. 👍🇦🇺😁
And an iconic song by Weddings, Parties, Anything.
What I have been going through this is the best amazing song to listen to I saw you Elvis in Melbourne front front row 😂
I think we all want to be loved this song gives us all hope 😂❤❤
yes, great video
It is very novel even now!
My interrpretation of this song/video? Elvis bemoans the lack of love in his life. He is constantly offered love by myriad people, but he never reciprocates - he wants to get but never gives ... hence the lack of love ... How many of us are like this ...?
I think I am
Brilliantly clever!
I love this song
Music Music Music Good
Because it didn't fit his image of this angry guy-the critics ignored this... and it's excellent.
Vern Pascal No, it’s because of the overproduction. Imperial Bedroom didn’t fit his angry young man persona and critics loved it.
A song for us lonely people😢
Declan lookin like a lil snacc
