- So you want to set up a native marine aquarium. But how do you do it? Well in this short video I’ll be showing you some of the basics that got me started. I’m not claiming to be an expert as I’m far from it. But I have managed to take my native marine aquarium from strength to strength without and fancy equipment.

I had a stickleback freshwater tank for over a year but struggle to get anything to thrive along the sticklebacks because on the faroe islands there are not alot of freshwater native species. Sticklebacks can also live in salt water so i made a native saltwater tank, i have sticklebacks, crabs, eels and a gobi and the tank is thriving!
I’ll be honest with you mate I didn’t realise that they had salt water sticklebacks until i caught one 😂😂 turns out it was my new favourite fish. I’ve had all kinds in my tank even small turbot. Keep going with the tank mate 👌
Great but I wish this was longer
I will make the next one a little longer 👌
Love the crab! That’s far more interesting than a fishbowl with a funfair goldfish called Derek.
😂😂😂 thanks Fraser John. Awkwardly the crab is called Derek…
And look in those tide pools for plants and fish that are stuck*
Brilliant little informative video. Has anyone ever told you that you sound like Neil Buchanan from Art Attack?
😂😂😂 now try it for yourself 😂😂😂
How do you keep those alive. Dont they nred a chiller or can they survive room temp? What kind of temprature ate you running now?
Hi mate no I don’t run a chiller you just need to be careful on those hot days frozen of bottle of water in the sump works a treat.
Hello,
I have a juwel 240L aquarium and I’m planning to turn it into a native marine aquarium.
The fish that I want to keep are poutings (trisopterus luscus) and five bearded rocklings, any tips? And what was your experience with having a five bearded rocking?
Amazing video btw!
Hi, I really appreciate the comment 🙏
My experience with the rockling was it needed more space and didn’t really like being in the tank. The same with the whiting. They never really settled if that makes sense(and I had the whiting in there over 3 months) I’ve never had pouting, but I went for a time where I only had my Blennys and I added a very small pollock and whiting and the blennys killed them overnight.
I think if I was to do it I would make sure they where juvenile fish and not in a crowded tank so they had space. I would also not have a Blenny colony established as mine are savage and attack any new fish i put in.
Hope this helps.
@@THEFISHINGPLACE thank you for responding back to me!
Can I maybe ask what you exactly mean by the fact that they couldn’t settle? Did they behave different or did they have eating difficulties?
I wil try to catch them as small as possible and buy basalt rocks for them to recreate their habitats and make hiding spaces for them, the rocks that the people sell on the market are most of them free or a few dollars because not many people want them.
And I will be blocking parts of my whole LED pipe to make it look like there are sunshines in the aquarium.
And I don’t know if I should get a cooler or not, you thing it’s necessary and have you used coolers for your whiting and five bearded rockling?
(Sorry if my English is not the best by the way, it’s because I’m from the Netherlands)
@@canaccount7568 your English is spot on mate👌. By not settled I mean they never got used to the tank like the other fish did. They would swim into the glass a lot and would only feed every now and again. I personally have never used a cooler, but I am going to invest in one, maintaining a constant temperature can only be a good thing.
@@THEFISHINGPLACE can you maybe tell me what the measurements are from your aquarium?
And Have you not tried blocking the glass/reflection with something so they don’t glass surf all the time?
How are you Mate, may I ask how many % waterchange you do?
Hi mate I’m good you? I do 25% every 2/3 weeks
@@THEFISHINGPLACE do you clean the gravel too? Or not
@@THEFISHINGPLACE im good by the way 👍
No I havnt been doing that incase there is eggs but wouldn’t harm it to much to do it if your not worried about eggs. If you go down the rocks there’s been loads of baby’s in the pools should get em in your tank 👌
@@THEFISHINGPLACE ahh I get it, but don’t you worry about the fish waste on the bottom? Or do the shrimps clean it?
Is there any water change required
Yes when I first set it up I was doing a 35% water change every week for a few months. But now it’s established I haven’t done a water for over 4 months.
@@THEFISHINGPLACE that’s brilliant 🤩 that then self sustained tank now . Might have a go then as that’s all was putting me off was the water changes
@@21wilks yea mine is now totally self sustained. Don’t let the initial water changes put you off it’s an awesome tank when you get it right👌 the main thing you need to worry about is oxygenation the more the better the fish will thrive 👌
