- Just though I'd share a little video showing how I catch most the creatures in my tank, so I filmed a couple of days on the ocean showing some of the creatures I typically can get.
Hope you'll enjoy the video!
Tanks for watching!

HOLD ON SKIPPER!! Don't chuck them back to sea send them to me 😍 instead. Very envious of the creatures you catch compared to our coastal rockpooling in UK. Marvellous colours and great video
Hehe, wish I could... 😄 I though we had much of the same critters as you do in the UK tbh!? Glad you enjoyed the video btw! Thanks for watching! 😊
this is exactly what i expected
This guy loves the sea!
Hehe, he certainly does!
In Canada, MNR and MOE have made restictions on not only what you can eat, but also what you can bring home as pets. Your disposition to saving, learning ecology and preservation is refreshing. There are people not so ethical which is why I believe that our rules/laws are there. Best regards to Norway!
I see. I thought it was allowed there tbh.. Is that something new? Is nothing local from the ocean allowed to keep? There are very few people keeping local fish/inverts in aquariums here for some reason, which I'm sure is why there's no regulations (other then the obvious to stay away from protected species).
I've learned so much about the local fauna keeping these tanks, which is a big part of the fun for me at least. Thanks for you feedback! Much appreciated! 🙂
Far too frequently does fish and wildlife intrude into matters they shouldn't be involved in.
The people who make these laws probably don't even know that private keeping of local wildlife is not only possible, but quite easy and accessible. It's a shame too, because incorporating local wildlife into people's daily lives is pretty much the best way to promote conservation. It makes the masses aware of the beautiful wildlife that they never knew they had, and makes them appreciate even the small but very important things that aren't usually noticed. Awareness is the best method of conservation.
The governments however are often lazy, and sacrifice this out of ignorance while making their laws. For example, to stop people from illegal stocking, some governments outlaw not just the illegal stocking, but the mere transport of live native fish. Trading the peoples freedoms for more efficient regulation is not okay. Outlaw the crime, not the means to do it.
What's the not so ethical way? Because I love animals and some people thought I was a animal abuser because of a photo I forgot to remove from my clump of fish photos

Thanks, much appreciated! 😁 Hope you'll enjoy the videos!
those squat lobsters are amazing
I agree, they are really cool creatures!
Such a variety wonderful creatures all in one spot. Truly amazing!
Thanks! Glad you liked it Tanya! :) And this is just what came up with my traps. I'm sure there's lots more fascinating stuff down there in that little spot that we've never seen!
One frelling great news for a ship!
Yaaay, thank you very much! 😄 Glad I'm not the only appreciator of that gem of a show!
That was great 👍
Thanks Mark! Glad you liked it! 😁
Fantastic.
Thank you!
Love your videos!!!!
Great to hear, thank you! 😁
Beautifully clear waters. Creatures so delicate
Thanks for watching! 😊
This is fantastic content. I’m glad you gave us a peek at how you acquire these. Thank you!
Very glad to hear you found it interesting! Thanks for letting me know! I really appreciate it! And, you're very welcome! 😁
This was relaxing and fun as well as informative to watch.
That's great to hear! Glad you liked it! 😊
Amazing video as alway! Some awesome finds, you would never think all that is down there!
Thanks you! There's a lot of cool creatures down there, that's for sure, and I often find something new I've never seen before, so that's always a lot of fun!
Very cool video!! Nice catches too 👍
Thank you very much! 😁
Catching these creatures is more interesting than catching tunas and other food fish
Hehe, it is exciting in a strange way! 😄
Very fascinating stuff
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
That was fun and interesting.. thanks for sharing
Happy to hear that! Thank you, and you're welcome! 😁
you work hands with a methodical efficiency but the video has a clear magic. bravo! :)
Thank you! Very kind of you! Much appreciated! 😊
This is awesome.
Thanks a lot! Glad you found it interesting! 😁
Great video, seriously. Around time 9.15 view of the sea floor from your boat is just amazing. Would recreational snorkeling even be an option? How cold is that water?
Thanks a lot! Glad you enjoyed it! 😁 There's a lot of people coming here for snorkeling actually during summertime, though usually with wetsuits. Temp is usually around 15-18C at its warmest I believe.
Wow, having a boat is great. And those traps gather cool stuff from deeper water. Ever considered to collect stuff snorkeling? That's where I explore most of the underwater world and also gather lots of stuff for my tank.
@@blackseaandothers Sorry, never got notified about this comment... If I lived in Portugal, I'd be snorkeling too. 😄 Not as nice to do in Norway, hehe, even though many do... I'm not a fan of cold water! I'd love to be able to get some nice macro algae from deeper than the tidal zone, so then snorkeling would be perfect. Maybe I'll try it one day!
@@ColdwaterTanks Since you don't like cold water Norway is just the place for you... Sometimes fishermen with nets bring up such interesting stuff from deeper waters. If there are still such traditional fishermen... In Greece I found such a port and got that beautiful sponge with the zoanthids on it from there.
@@blackseaandothers Hehe, yeah... 😄 True, there can be some interesting stuff coming up with nets, but often it's broken/ripped off rocks etc. Traps like I use are good for getting creatures, but not really for macro algae, sponges and such, for the same reason. That's when diving/snorkeling is the way to go I think..
I know where the name Talyn comes from. Moya would be proud.
So many aliens...
Paradies for people with a sense for it!
How deep is it there??
There's a lot of cool creatures down there, that's for sure! These were all between 10-20m deep.
Kjempebra 👌
Takker så mye! 😁
Can you maybe please put a pollock or a whiting in your aquarium? It would be pretty darn cool
It would also devour everything else in there
They'd cause too much trouble in my current setup, I'm afraid, hehe.. I am planning on getting a bigger tank though at some point, so I might give it a go then! 😁
@@ColdwaterTanks Thats true tho, they will indeed attack or eat al your other creatures in the tank, they are also huge eaters too! can’t wait till you get a bigger tank tho!
@@canaccount7568 Hehe, exactly! Don't know yet when I'll be getting the big one. Setting up a couple smaller ones first in the basement as a little experiment (no chiller), but it will be coming.
@@derpychicken2131 Hehe, exactly!
Squat lobsters are such a good look for aquariums why did you not take them?
Hey Simon, great video! I was wondering, what's the purpose of keeping unbaited traps in the water?
Thank you! I usually put the traps in the ocean a little before the season starts, but then unbaited. I have a small boat, and don't have too much space, so getting the traps in the ocean takes a few days.. Then a couple of days before the season, I go over and bait everything.
@@ColdwaterTanks that's so clever!
How do you get your specimens back home safely? Is there a need to cool and oxygenate the water between catching them on the boat and getting them into an aquarium?
Thanks for your question. Nothing complicated.. It depends on the time of year tbh.. If there's many hours between catching them and the time I get home (I go home every day..), I just change out some of the water in the bucket. (Also I do make sure the temp in the bucket and the aquarium is about the same before adding anything.) No need to oxygenate, as I don't bring as many creatures at once as I had in the bucket in this video. That was just to show what I can get on a string of crab traps. I usually just bring small shrimp to use as food, and once in a while I find a creature I want to add to the tank..
May I ask where this is this?
This is from the coast of Norway.
Did you get a boating license for this and how do you get that type of boat
I'm a crab fisherman here in Norway, so I do have a fishing licence (sort of..). It's something everyone here can do, if they buy a boat that's considered good/safe enough to use for it. Boat has to be approved and registered in advance.
where in norway?
I'm in Trøndelag.
what's the salinity?
Salinity here is usually around 1.025.
Where do you get the fish traps?
I don't specifically fish for these little critters. They are "by-catch" in my crab traps. :)
@@ColdwaterTanks
Ah ok. Where do you get the crab traps then? :-D
Are they branded? I’d like to get some myself to try and survey the coastal waters of Scotland.
@@scotthutchison1436 I'm in Norway, so not sure buying from here is a good idea with the shipping. I bought from a local store, but they're available in fisheries related web stores too.
This is the kind I'm using: webshop.okmarine.no/krabbeteine-plast-14kg
Thank you for sharing this. I'm so impressed with all of the little creatures you find. I don't know what to say about r/thedepthsbelow. I tried to help.
You're welcome! Glad you find it interesting! Hehe, I appreciate the support mate! The Internet just needs something to shout at I guess. Like trying to argue with a brick wall sometimes, haha.. Thanks for trying!
