About Shaun Tomson
Shaun Tomson was born in the coastal town of Durban, South Africa and went on to become one of the world's best surfers, winning events all over the world culminating in the surfing world's top honor, the World Pro Title in 1977. He competed on the pro tour for 16 years, winning 19 professional events, and at the time was both the youngest and oldest surfer to win a professional event. He was a true surfing innovator, developing a revolutionary and radical new tube riding technique.
He is recognized as one of surfing's greatest ambassadors and is a strong proponent of environmentalism, having been chairman of the Surfrider Foundation Advisory Board for the last 8 years and recently elected to the Board of Directors. In 2002 the Surf Industry Manufacturer's Association honored him as Environmentalist of the Year and in 2009 Surfrider Foundation in Hawaii presented him with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Growing up in the 70's in Huntington Beach California, Shaun was always a great ambassador for surfing and an inspiration to what a surfer could be.. well spoken and articulate. He is truly a tribal elder. Thank you for sharing your story and helping others prepare for the light and the road ahead.

Wow, what an amazing story. Tears are still rolling down my face as I type this review. The strength you possessed to deliver that TEDx talk is still so hard to believe. Shaun, I'm Alan Highton. I am probably the person in the world who most observes lightning. I also have a very profound belief in messages from the world of meteorology, especially lightning. That bolt was from Matthew. Don't doubt it for a minute. I'm 54 and grew up surfing. You were my idol and friends said I back hand surf with your same style. This coincidence I see in this video is not by chance, nor was Luke's name by chance. You have been enlightened as I have. Would be an honor to contact you some day.
