This video will show you how to replace the immobilizer unit on a 1999-2004 Honda Odyssey. If your van has stopped recognizing your key then this could be your problem. Авто/Мото
I had a problem with suddenly not being able to start my 2000 Odyssey with 225K miles. We got the immobilizer bypass brake pedal code by taking its title to a nearby Honda dealer and thus were able to drive it to the dealer. They diagnosed the Immobilizer, said it would be $320 to replace and reprogram, and that it would be a special order for the part. I found this video, ordered a Genuine Honda Immobilizer Module 39730-S84-A02 off of eBay for about $70, and replaced it by following the video. The keys are all recognized again. No reprogramming was required because this part is just a reader. I used a right-angle Philips head screwdriver and needlenose pliers from the bottom to remove the back screw. It took 30 minutes to work it out. I didn't read the method suggested by Bryan Tuttle of removing the gearshift lever. It would have saved me time.
I just replaced this exact immobilizer part on my 1999 Honda Accord LX and it worked great! I was getting an intermittent blinking green key and when I did, the car wouldn't start (I tapped on the underneath of the steering wheel in the vicinity of the immobilizer and it would then work). The video helped a bunch along with several of the comments. I did *not* have to reprogram my keys. Also, based on the comments, I was able to remove the third screw that is really difficult to get to by using a screwdriver (I didn't have to hacksaw the piece off.) I popped off the knee panel (after removing two screws on the side by the fuse access panel) and that allowed me to feed a normal size Phillips screwdriver from the back near the brake pedal towards me and the back of the steering wheel. Worked great. Thanks again for the video (and many of the supporting comments.)
Hey Scott, I also have a 1999 Honda Accord LX, last week it one morning I went to turn it over and just crank wanted to start, so I fix my main relay swapped out ignition switch wire harness, took my key to a locksmith and he said the key was good it was reading like it was supposed to, did a couple other things but still getting a blinking green light and won't turn over, by chance you have a little info you can send my way as to where to get preferably a cheap one, I have over 260,000 miles so not going to be too picky except for getting it to start, do I type in my VIN number to find out the kind of mobilizer or do I just use for reference the one that's on my car as to the model number or part number, but I appreciate it
Absolutely amazing, Dayne! Very well done. Not sure yet if this is my problem (immobilizer), but it's so reassuring to know how to replace it if necessary. Thank you, Sir!
No problem! Glad I could help.
Thanks for posting.
I will be trying this, as I have a similar problem on my FRV (UK model) - i.e. intermittent recognition.
YA Might wanna Add? That a locksmith can come out and pair up the keys you have that are chipped. Great video. Worked for me. But not the part time issue of key light illuminating 2 seconds before run
Yippee ki yay! I got a used immobilizer at local u pull it, popped it in, fixed! Thanks for the fine tutorial!
I had a similar problem to others. Minivan would just die at weird times. After sitting for awhile (20 minutes usually worked), it would start right up as if nothing was wrong. Attempting to start immediately would just spin the starter. Replacing the immobilizer fixed the problem my Odyssey was having...
One comment though. If you remove the gearshift lever, there's no need to cut the back tab holding the immobilizer. Lever is held on by three 10mm bolts - two on the side behind the ignition key and one on the bottom. There's also a single 14mm nut holding the transmission cable to the lever. None of these are hard to remove/replace and it's dead simple to remove that rear screw once done.
Thanks for the tips and glad it worked so well for you!
Bingo!!! 2001 Acura CL would crank but not start. Green key light flashing. Ordered Immobilizer on EBay, part Immobilizer Module 39730-S84-A0 for $30 instead of the $160 for a new part. Just installed it. Started beautifully, no programming necessary. I had called a lock shop and my mechanic. They both insisted I'd probably need to bring it to a dealer for reprogamming. Nope. Hundreds just saved.
Very nice fix. Great video. Regards,
I Just did this to my 2000 honda accord which had the same problem. I basically had the same setup. that back screw he is talking about is a nightmare to get out, but it is possible. I also did not have to reprogram anything even though a Honda dealer said I had too.I just hooked it up and it worked as normal. I am hoping this will fix the problem permanently.
Thanks for the video. I have been struggling with the same issue in my 2001 Acura for over a year now. I left it at dealer for repair but it occurs so randomly that they could not replicate and therefor not repair...even after a week of time in shop...Nothing is more frustrating than an unreliable set of wheels. Thanks again Dayne!
I'm going to try this. I replaced the ECM with a used one and the same problem occurred. Seems to be particularly when it is very hot or when it rains. Both probably create a humidity problem in the cabin. Very frustrating when otherwise the car runs fine. Thanks
Am wondering if your key light came on or not?
lost key to my 02 accord can i disable the immobilizer and jus use my valet key ?
BTW did you have to have the key reprogrammed after installing the new immobilizer?
hello, I have question, I replace it the immobilizer to honda odyssey 2004, but I replace a immobilizer from an used honda odyssey 2003, do you think that going to work?
Thank you for the information. My 99 Acura CL is showing symptoms of a malfunctioning immobilizer unit:
The green "key" dash light sometimes constantly blinks when any of the original keys are inserted;
The car cranks, but does not start;
The car starts when the key is occasionally recognized, then runs fine.
I'm confident the immobilizer unit needs to be replaced. Thank you for the walk through.
FrikinImpossible did this fix it?
I also replaced my immobilizer but the green key light doesn’t come on at all and the car still doesn’t turn on, crank no start. I also noticed when I lock and unlock my car, using the remote and the keys, the horn from the alarm doesn’t work, please advice, thanks
2002 Accord Coupe V6
Hello. I replaced the battery in my 2007 odyssey and now I'm get a flashing key light, I've looked at many videos and up to now I don't think it's any fuse. I'm at a lost! Please what do suggest. Oh, up until I replaced the battery the car was working fine, recognized te key and everything.
So is there any reprogramming of the 2 keys after you replace the immobilizer?
My Honda Civic 2007, no start flashing green key on dashboard, it was programm but saying immobilizer abnormal, we change it yet it didnt start. i need help pls.
if you change an immobilizer on a Honda, you do indeed have to program the existing key to the the new immo unit. the immo must recognize the key in order to send the message to the ECU to start the car. This is only accomplished by using a scan tool through the OBD port to put the immo in a learn mode and enter the key to memory. Some Honda systems require the extra step of matching the immo to the ECU before programming the key. This video has erred in its oversimplification of the process.
+kg4st Have you replaced this yourself? I am not a professional mechanic, but this video is me performing this fix without programing anything. My understanding was that the immobilizer just sent the key information to the ECU. It is just a conduit. I went off of my research, purchased the part, replaced it and my van worked perfectly. Of course if your key is faulty this fix will not work. If your ECU is faulty this fix will not work.
This is only true when a new key will be used in the ignition of the car. Its a RFID unit that reads the tags in the key and verifies the keys RFID Code to the one stored in the ECM, if the key matches the car will start. If not then the car will not start. Changing just the immobilizer will not result in the need of reprogramming. This is onyl true when installing a new Tumbler or Ingition Switch Assembly when their will be new keys to start the vehicle.
+Dayne Wright after Roy's comments, I looked further into this and have found that you two are correct. I'm the one who is wrong. Please accept my humble apologies. The immo's I've had to reprogram have likely been tumbler swaps as Roy stated. However, at 2003 Odyssey had a change in the antitheft system and may require marrying of the immo to ECU. good work Dayne Wright. Thanks for your knowledge Roy.
kg4st I need to do the same for a 04 Honda Accord was thinking of ordering sbb programmer on ebay but not sure, I installed new ignition with new keys and transponder unit on it
That's probably why he didnt start it and ended the video lol
Please I need help my Honda Odyssey 1996 decided to die on my way home from work.i thought I had run out if gas I got $20 petrol my lights on dash at all still working but unfortunately my van dies not want to start.its kicking over but not starting as I had to get towed can I please get some help thank you
Did this fix the issue
txs God for the tip....im having this problem for a long time now....im gonna tryit today.!......let you know if it works !!!!
So...did it work? Or is The Hacksaw Bandit full of shit?
thank you
Thanks Dayne, did you have to reprogram the new immobilizer to accept the key once it was installed?
Andre Broquard yes you have too
When the immobilizer unit failed did it still crank? Having the same issue with my 04 accord but everytime I try to crank it not only does the green key light flash but the ECU fuse blows as well
I presume you've found an answer since you posted this, but for anyone else with the same question, 99-04 Ody will crank but not start if immo box doesn't detect a match (or if the box itself is toast).
I did this on a 1999 acura tl. the screw in the back can be removed if you pick up an angled screw driver at your local home depot or menards or whatever is close. i got a set of two for about $4. they are shaped like L's on each end and you'll need a phillips. It is kind of a hassle. I put my phone in selfie mode so i could see the screen and poked around back there until i knew where it was. after that it's tedious but do-able. you migh even be able to use a socket with a phillips.
very good
Bulb Alschorta luminous and void is what is the solution required
great video do you have to reprogram keys when changing immobilizer
Yes it has to be reprogrammed...
You didn't have to program system to recognize new immobilizer? If not, hopefully my new immobilizer in '05 Civic doesn't need programming either.
Will this work for a 1998 Odyssey?
no
I'm having a similar problem did it ever die out while you were driving ?
Cody Fontenot it will not
@Dave - Glad to help! It was the same thing for me. Hopefully this will work for you and fix the problem. It is definitely the cheapest solution to start with for troubleshooting.
dwayne I am having the same problem.....can you please tell me where can I buy the immobilizer for a decent price??
I am sorry I spelled your name wrong!
All the screws are there for a reason and I took them all out in less than 5 minutes
Wait a minute don't you have to get the new immobilizer unit with transponder receiver ring reprogrammed up to the transponder chip in the key so you can get it to start?
I don't think the transponder chip in the key will recognize a different new immobilizer unit /transponder receiver... I'm pretty sure you have to get it reprogrammed but please let me know if you were able to get it to start! Would be a big help my car's been sitting for years and I want to get it going again thanks
Actually the immobilizer just sends the signal. it doesn't do anything else. Because it just sends the signal it doesn't need to be programmed. I would replace this and test it first before needing to reprogram anything. And yes...this fixed my issue. The problem was that the computer just wasn't getting the signal.
My name is Erika Ayon from Mexico.. and i have a problem with my car Honda Odissey 2002, the problem is the my car have the system inmobilizer and my car does not turn. I need Replacing the immobilizer of my Honda Odyssey 2002... the question is how i can to change it? and where I can to buy the pieza? My key is not the same code.. Please help me.. because Im working childrens with cancer. and the car is very necesary.. (Sorry for my english lol)
You didn't had to program the key?
Glad to help. It is a quick fix, but you probably have to cut the plastic like I did.
Fuse box problem??!
yes, I have been called on by many mechanics that have swapped Honda immobolizers. The immo stores the key info and is not just a conduit. 98-02 Odyssey would require key programming after a swap. While 03-04 would likely require a VIN# match between immo and ECU and key programming. Could it work without programming? Never say never. ..but as a general rule...no.
The ECU only needs reprogramming when New keys are used. The keys contain an RFID tag like the ones used in ID Cards that companies use fror employee building access and time clock operations
Thanks @Roy Leblanc. This is my point as well.
Dayne Wright for 5.00 at AutoZone you could have avoided damaging the casing using a hammer and flat head screwdriver, punch or chisel and a hammer to remove the break away nuts and remove the whole ignition module to remove the screw. The $5 is for some replacement fasteners at AutoZone. Or you could get new break away bolts for a decent price online. Might not be much at the dealer or AutoZone either
Sorry, this is bullshit. The key does indeed contain and RFID chip...which is programmed with an encrypted code. What the fuck would be the good of a code if it wasn't stored elsewhere for matching???
This video is BS. I can swear on a stack of bibles that this won't work on a 01-05 Civic (same immo box type).
Where did u purchase?m
5 years later on e bay
To take off that screw they take off the steading wheel or do what I did wish is get a super small finch socket and cut my philippsnnit so short to where it barely stick out . Then the hole thing can slide in between and get that screws out no problem .. I’ll do a video to show it Happen
Video is dead on. Was concerned with the part of having to break/cut rear piece as screw was in accessible, however this was accurate. Google Item# is 39730-S84-A0 and it currently runs ~75 s/h & tax. Be sure to call in advance as some websites listed it as in stock, however after calling, I was told additional 5 days to order.
Programming Alschorta each motor way
I have This problem with my accord 99 😦😦
all you had to do is drop the steering column take off the top steering calum cover use a short phillips screw driver and thats it! you dont need to cut it
Thanks for the tip! I think I did try that, but didn't have a screw driver short enough. Definitely the way to go though.
Your welcome!.
Iv tried this on my 03 Accord... bought a junkyard immobilizer and installed it but it still wasnt reading my key... anyone else have a solution?
Peter Potter Did you get it fixed yet? I'm struggling with the same issue. My locksmith said I need a brand new unit and that a used one from a junkyard won't work.
We installed a used one and had new keys programmed, but still nothing! Next step is buying a new one at the dealer!
havent fixed it yet... weve been trying to switch out the immobilizer and it didnt work, next we tried buying a bypass system and that didnt work.... im just going to take it to dealer im done doing home jobs. next we were going to try switching out they whole ignition and get a new key and everything from home but its the same price to just have the dealership fix the bloody thing. my car has been KIA for months and im fed up so im just giving up and letting the dealer take care of it
That's where I'm at. If a new one doesn't fix it, off to the dealer it goes!! Good luck hopefully they get yours back on the road!
Thanks man you too. classic honda putting an immobilizer with no bypass. what you could do though is bring it to your dealer and get the brake bypass code and that would work if u need to get somewhere important. good luck to you too.
I hope that you unplugged your battery because if you air bag goes off at the wrong time it could really be bad even deadly ..
Cutting it, was unnecessary, but if it worked for you, that's fine.
Tip: Remove the steering wheel
Yeah all that ring is is an antenna for the RFID chip in the key. On most vehicles the immobilizer control is usually built in to the instrument cluster or the PCM itself.
No. An antenna doesn't need a 93Cx6 chip inside. If this worked, which I'm skeptical of because the video doesn't actually show the dude plug it in and it work, it's because the ECU is rewriting the chip upon installation of the new immo box. The antenna is the _inner_ ring.
umm anyone notice he has donate bitcoins here... imagine how much bitcoins he has gotten omg
No. the immobilizer simply reads the key and then sends it to the computer. If the computer says it is good, it will allow you to start. More of like a middle man type idea. Make sense? Because of this there is no need to reprogram it.
A "hacksaw" should NOT be necessary!
just not for your picky ass.
this is bull shit. why didn't you show the car cranking. because you cant just randomly replace the immobilizer and as far as the breakaway bolts you say are impossible to get out. there is a method for their removal. And furthermore you don't cut parts out that were intended to have a screw in them. the IMO has to be synched to the vehicle in order for it to work and you have to have a special expensive scan tool to do that. Don't do this. I am a licensed locksmith and i have been to hundreds of jobs where they followed some bs you tube amateur advice and fucked their car up. the problem with your IMO was more than likely a simple cleaning of the connecting plug.
Thanks ... I'll check this out first before replacing the immobilizer.
