The terms classical or classical music can have different meanings depending on the context. In a narrow musicological sense, classical music in the German-speaking world is understood to mean the dominant European styles of art music from around 1730 to 1830. In a broader, colloquial sense, classical or classical music are used as terms for the entire tradition of European art music. In compositions, classical music can also refer to other musical traditions, such as non-European or popular ones.
European art music is largely distinguished from many other non-European classical and some popular forms of music by its notation system, which has been in use since about the 11th century. Catholic monks developed the first forms of modern European music notation to unify liturgy throughout the church. Unlike most popular styles, which took the song (strophic) form or a derivative of that form, classical music is known for the development of sophisticated forms of instrumental music such as symphony, concerto, fugue, sonata, and mixed vocal and instrumental styles such as opera, cantata and mass.
The term "classical music" only appeared at the beginning of the 19th century in order to clearly canonize the period from Johann Sebastian Bach to Ludwig van Beethoven as a golden age. The earliest reference to "classical music" recorded by the Oxford English Dictionary is from about 1829.
    epochs
In its wider meaning, classical music encompasses epochs from the music of the Renaissance to the present, one of which in turn is called classical in the narrower sense.
    -Old music
-Music of the Middle Ages (from High Gothic, around 13th/14th century)
-Music of the Renaissance (15th to 16th centuries)
-Baroque Music (ca. 1600 to 1750)
    -Preclassic (ca. 1730 to 1770)
    -Gallant music
-Sensitive style (ca. 1720 to 1770)
    -classic
-Viennese Classicism (ca. 1770 to 1830)
-Music of the Romantic period (19th / early 20th century)
    -late romance
    -Modern and new music
    -Impressionism (ca. 1890 to 1920)
    -Expressionism (ca. 1906 to 1930)
    -Atonal music (c. from 1906)
    -neoclassicism
    -Postmodern and contemporary music
    -Minimal Music (approx. from 1960)
    -post-minimalism
The transitions are fluid, so Impressionism is attributed to modernism and late romanticism. From the 20th century, recourse to classical music can be found as art music, in the instrumentation or directly stylistically in musical impressionism, expressionism, neoclassicism, in new music, neoclassicism and often in film music. These are often viewed as newer directions in classical music itself, and there is no clear-cut demarcation.
