Nice of BYD for answering 3 of the most obvious questions right on the back of the car: 'What does BYD stand for?', 'Is it an EV?', and 'How quickly can it accelerate?' Convenient!

the 0 to 60 for power is genius, perfectly clear, and very specific, also perfectly comparable, ignores the big car with big engine is still just slow problem too.
Yeah but I’m not worried about my big V8 engine spontaneously combusting because a small rock hit underneath. I also know it’ll start up and run in freezing temperatures and that fuel is literally minutes away wherever I am. And that I can fill the tank in less than 5 minutes. And if my engine or transmission fails it won’t cost north of $20,000 to repair it. But yeah those are some good zero to 60 times.
@@noahknight4039 you really want to claim reliability or cheapness on a v8? you could easily choose an actual good ice and would agree, but with those monsters, my bet would be on the electric stuff, even with all their issues.
Some correction: 1. BYD does make ICE cars. Although they are phasing pure-gas cars out, they still offer a lot of hybrid cars. 2. In fact the Han itself has a hybrid version, that's why there's no storage area in the engine bay. It uses a series-hybrid system, where the engine turns a generator to recharge the battery instead of driving the wheels directly.

BYD has been in the Chilean market for quite some time, not being well received at the beginning, to the point it left the local market for about 6 years, but as they returned with electric vehicles, it has become a pretty big deal here, in just a couple of years almost 3000 electric buses from BYD are used for public transportation

Just wanted to add something. BYD actually does sell ICE vehicles. They do have one or two pure peotrol cars (which will be removed from the line up in a few years time), and their best selling vehicles are plug-in hybrids. The Han also has hybrids versions, but the electric version is their best selling pure electric passenger vehicle. Edit: After visiting BYD’s website, I’ve learnt they don’t sell pure petrol cars anymore. Everything is either a plug-in hybrid or a pure electric. My info was grossly outdated, sorry for the confusion.

Not going to lie, i actually appreciate some of thr features on this car. The rotating screen, the front and interior camara with cover. I even appreciate the seemingly bizare 1% increments on the sun roof, it would let you really dial in how much sun comes in which would be good if you have a child in the back or something. Assuming you would at some point be able to operate it with voice commands increments of 1-100 would give you much more precise control than increments of 10 or even "closed, half, full" which i feel would be the norm otherwise.

Had one of these as a rental recently. Most of the stuff buried in the on screen menus can be controlled by voice - the sunroof, seat heaters etc. Say “Hey BYD” to activate then utter the command.
I actually put a few miles on that very car myself a while ago. Agree Doug - it’s nice, quirky, and fast. I’ve got thousands of miles on Chinese cars, both BEV and ICE, and they’re a lot closer to being able to sell in the US than many believe. At $70k+ however, the HAN has some steep competition.
The exterior styling, to me, is a highlight of this car. Too many times these days a car company will try a "look at me!!" approach that just comes off as weird and garish. Sharp lines for no real reason, a front end that looks like it's been in an accident, and so on. The styling here is subtle, and I like it.
Oh yeah chinese ford taurus will definatelly win car of the year for it's styling. Also I love how model 3 accel is 5, but this car is 8, even though theyre both ev's with shitty performance. Yuan or Yuan Plus? Because the Yuan Plus is currently being exported all over the world as the Atto 3, and selling like hotcakes. The current gen BYD vehicles like the Yuan Plus and Seal have much more cohesive design inside and out compared to their earlier green vehicles like the Han and Song.

I like this car a lot. Looks good from every angle. Doesn't catch peoples eye like a Pagani, but it doesn't need to either. Besides, does anyone take pictures of the E-class (or what ever Doug has) on streets? I highly doubt it. and even if you do find it generic, at least it doesn't look bad, unlike many other new cars. I literally saw this car driving around Pasadena yesterday! I thought it was some new Kia or something, and that someone had just stuck the BYD slogan on the back themselves🤣 Decided to look it up to see what it was to find out that Doug just put out a new review!
I think BYD did a good job making an EV look like a normal car instead of other EVs where they typically have ridiculous design elements. Quite frankly looks kind of like a Ford Fusion
Took me a minute to realize you mean the US Fusion (which is called Mondeo here). Our Fusion is a nasty MPV. But yes, the Han does look pretty decent, and I always like to see companies making sedans rather than more SUVs.
I love it! I really hope Doug reviews more of these unknown and weird cars, from all over the world. There are tons of them, especially now, in the electric car era.
I got to ride the BYD Han a few times from ride-share apps in Beijing. The first impression is the insanely big leg space of the back row. It's super comfortable compared to older ICE sedans
In China this car is priced similar to the Model 3 (which is a class smaller), and around half the price of an E-class / 5 series (gas version). That explains why in China it's the best selling model in its sector. Unfortunately such pricing would not be possible as an import. It should also be noted that the model tested here is last gen. Newer model has a smoother tail design and better suspension, among other changes.
I've always thought that the stereotype of Chinese products being poor in quality is driven by their customers. If a US, and other, companies go to a Chinese manufacturer and say I want you to build this for me and I'm going to warranty it for one year, they say Yes... we can do that. If you wanted them to build something that could be warrantied for 10 years, they could probably do that as well. It wouldn't be as inexpensive, which is why US companies turn to China for manufacturing in the first place.
What you said is so true. When people whine about the quality of Chinese made products, 99% of 'em fail to realize manufacturers only produce products according to specifications of order sheets, nothing more nothing less. Its the greedy entrepreneurs that decide bringing in unreliable products into the States.
I think that stems more from the Chinese "knock-off" products that they are notorious for producing. I mean people are more than happy to purchase quality products like iPhones that are, yes, made in China, but they'll laugh at the cheap iPhone knock-off made by some counterfeit operation in China!
The Han is already available in certain European countries. This includes Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Norway, Sweden and Denmark. I think we should get the Han (as well as the Tang) in the UK and more European countries.

BYD was just the initials of the phonetic symbols of its Chinese name, which also has a funny story: it is actually rather strange and totally made-up in Chinese simply because it was easier to get the trademark since many regular names had already been registered in the economic boom in Shenzhen. They never thought they would come along this far, so they had to retro-fit a more proper brand name for its overseas markets. This is how they came up with the Build Your Dreams brand name to match the acronym BYD. Many may not remember but BYD Auto started copying 9th gen Corolla 1:1 and selling bunch to taxi fleets, that's how they stayed afloat and kept the ball rolling. The company itself started as an OEM and eventually evolved into one of the biggest lithium battery manufacturers, that's why EV makes a lot of sense to them as well, also why they are able to make 70% of the parts in house. Great video! Many quirks in this car, loved how they just stuck with the 0-6 time for badging, hilarious. The first time I've heard of BYD is when the pandemic hit they were the company that CA contracted with to make lots of masks. Also, LA bought a fleet of all eletric city buses off BYD. They could barely make it up hill with a full passenger load and caught fire at an alarming rate. To the point that the City of LA parked them and tax payer millions literally up in smoke in the interest of "going green". Again. And again.
21:08 BYD used to make (and probably still makes) cheap combustion engine cars. They got the motors (and I guess the gears as well) from Japan and assembled them in their cars like BYD F3 in 2008. this is the best feature of our BYD Atto3 - being able to install android apps. Its locked down in some markets, but not others. The info system is so fast and capable, streaming youtube vids (while parked) speeds up the EV recharging process.
Outside of Teslas, this is the first time I've seen a car on your channel where the infotainment system is fast and responsive. Normally they always look slow and laggy which would drive me nuts. This one looks great, it's great to finally see another car maker take this aspect seriously.
Tesla use a Linux-based OS on their infotainment system. I believe BYD uses a fork of android, hence the snappyness. Most brands use their in-house engine and yeah, the performance in them is really questionable. I can't understand why don't they use android or Linux and have great infotainment experiences.
Never been a huge fan of electric cars.. but this one looks really nice and I love the interior. I’d honestly totally consider one of these if I’m ever in the market for an EV, and if they ever decide to bring them here lol.
It's probably extremely expensive to design and manufacture that so it won't break in a few months to a year. This car is nice overall, but that screen looks like it's barely attached to the dash and I'd bet one firm tap would cause it to break off.

Clearly, these two vehicles serve different purposes, with one targeting performance enthusiasts and the other catering to those who seek comfortable daily transportation. However, it's surprising to hear that its competitors in the United States are the A6, 5 Series, and E-Class.
BYD HAN starts from 32,600 USD while new C class for example starts from 45k$. For this car to compete with the even E class segment is just crazy lol. So I valet cars for a 5 star resort hotel in California, I came across the SUV version of the manufacturer. I got into it and was like what the hell is this. I guess it was a wife of a Chinese executive driving it. I driving all types of cars ranging from saturns to Ferraris, I was quite surprised how nice the interior is. The outside of it didn’t look all the great (kind a look like a Hyundai sante fe) but the inside was really luxurious. I’ve always told people when I was a salesmen, you don’t spend time standing looking at the car, but you spend majority of the time driving it. For a daily commuter, buy a car your comfortable driving and looking at from the inside
Warren Buffett's major investment into BYD, buying nearly 8% of the company, makes me pay pay attention to it. In fairness, it's a pretty good-looking car, and using the 0-60 badge is pure genius 😊

I like this car. The swivel screen is actually pretty clever. It looks great and has a bunch of different features. It would be noticeable if it had a BMW or Mercedes badge but because it’s not…it doesn’t get attention.
Seeing how all these electric cars are a pretty new thing, if they built up a bit of a presence in the US, I would consider buying a BYD for the right price. Also, let's not forget they've been in the battery business for a while. So, if their battery tech is proven, even more of a reason to get one. More competition is a good thing.
Outside of the US BYD is gaining quite some popularity, what attracts most people is their reasonable price EVs with better interio than the competion. The Han is their more luxury targeted car, they also have a competitor to the model 3 which will be the one that sells the most.
in my country, this car is just over 25-30k new and can be had for low 20's for a used car with under 15k miles, while the e class, a6 and 5 series are all in the 60k range. its extremely popular among the uber drivers and the lower middle class people. great value for money!
I personally think that if Chinese automakers would bring their incredibly value packed models to the US it would be a fantastic thing for our car market. Cars today are insanely overpriced and affordability is getting more and more rare. This would introduce some healthy competition that would have us all some actual money for once.

In China this car is priced similar to the Model 3 (which is a class smaller), and around half the price of an E-class / 5 series (gas version). That explains why in China it's the best selling model in its sector. Unfortunately such pricing would not be possible as an import.

- REAR COMFORT: that's because of in-laws, not people being chaufferred.

i actually find the features very interesting! The main thing that will matter is the quality and reliability of the vehicle. And the chinese brand has their work cut out for them to go against lexus and mercedes and bmw and audi given the perceived views of a lot of other chinese products.
Fun fact, you may be able to actually ride in a BYD in the states. Some municipalities purchased a few of their EV buses for public transportation system, not sure if any of them are still in service so
BYD in Chinese is acronym for son of bitch. The founder himself chose it as a joke when starting the company.
