The Diet And Fitness Industry LIED To You (4 TRUTHS)

  • The diet and fitness industry lied to you
I’m not talking about the false magic pills and quick fixes when I’m saying you’ve been lied to when it comes to your diet and workouts.
Actually I see the problem as something else…
The disconnect between many trainers, coaches, dietitians and professionals and the people they want to help.
What keeps us stuck in this yo-yo dieting cycle is oddly the gap between what we “should” ideally be doing and what is realistic for our lifestyle.
Because food is not just truly fuel any longer.
    It’s social. It’s celebration. It’s emotional. It’s enjoyment.
Yet instead of recognizing this and striking a balance, weighing the cost and rewards of everything for ourselves,
we seek to be perfect and hit some arbitrary standards of clean eating only to create unsustainable habits which ultimately backfire.
These unsustainable habits keep us stuck losing the weight only to regain it and more as we fall back into old lifestyle patterns and try to do things we enjoy.
We never learn to create the healthiest version of our personal lifestyle.
That’s why I want to go over 4 common diet and exercise MYTHS I see pushed far too often in the health and wellness realm.
One size doesn’t fit all and we need to accept the opportunity in options to find our balance.
How we build our 80/20 balance will be unique!

WOW! this statement you said...."Because food is not just truly fuel any longer. It’s social. It’s celebration. It’s emotional. It’s enjoyment" I am so glad you said that. Because eating just for fuel these days isn't realistic to me. Special events do come up, and I'm glad you teach how to balance things

Probably my favorite video of yours yet. I gained back some weight when I had to return to the office after the Covid work from home period. I finally discovered that when I rested more and increased my dietary fats, I actually started losing weight and gaining muscle more easily. I also learned that it's okay to relax a little in my 60s.

Everyone has a top 5 this, 5 things you shouldn't eat, 5 things you must, 5 training routines you are doing wrong, 5 things you must do, your working too hard, your training isn't intense enough. Eat less, no eat more, yada, yada. Sometimes I feel like I just suck. Thanks Cori for keeping it real and making us smile.

With every bite I ask myself,
'Is this contributing to or destroying my health 🤔'? Occasionally, I willfully engage in a brief, limited foray into a destructive eating habit because it's 😋 tasty, nostalgic. But... I engage knowing full well I must accept responsibility for the outcome 😅 (extra time in the gym or extra caloric intake restriction) .

I like this video because you have a lot of nuances.
I like the approach of : don’t associate a work out with burning calories.
About food indeed it’s best not to classify food as good or bad because it’s more a question of frequency. They is food you better eat more of it (veggies) and others where it’s for pleasure but not for everyday or at least not a big amount (eg chocolate cake).

This is an encouraging reminder. Right now I'm the leanest I've been in my life, but these last few pounds are quite the challenge. So I'm mindful of metabolic adaptation instead of that "Something's gotta give/CICO!" way of thinking.
But I have learned that maintenance, for me, will be easier than I believed. I thought for sure I'd regain everything overnight by going on a maintenance phase :O

So I’m down 25 pounds on my journey to shedding 100 total.
    I’m shooting for 1500 calories a day.
Protein around 40%, fat around 40% and carbs around 20.
One day of long hard(for me) cardio, one long day of easy cardio, two hiit days, two weight training days.
I have off days mixed in with all of that and two days that focus mostly on stretching and mobility.
After 6 weeks I gave myself a food break and ate some ice cream, some pretzels, a grilled cheese and a BLT.
After a week of that I got back on track.
The little break sort of resets my brain and keeps me from collapsing and binging on Doritos, etc.
I’m looking to shed 8-10 pounds a month so I’m on a one year project.
It took me decades to to get to where I’m at now and recovering in a year to me seems like a victory.
Down 100 pounds and I’ll be at 200.
At that point I can get serious about training for the 12 miles in three hours with a 50 pound rucksack goal.
It’s a phase of a selection process I managed as a young man and I believe, maybe foolishly, that I can do it again at 67.
I’ve got the standard shitty hips and cranky back(some days) but I’ve never smoked and despite being way overweight I’m still unmedicated.
25 pounds down and I can go 3 miles cross country already.
Thank you,Cori, for all the advice.
As always, all the best to you.

I have been dieting pretty much for 4 years straight. I can't seem to lose the weight. Went on keto for 2 years and lose almost 30 lbs. A loss in my family made meal prepping impossible and I regained nearly all of the weight within 2 months. I have seen a doctor and my resting heart rate was 30 bpm...which my dr says my body has just become super efficient. I believe my metabolism has been severely damaged as I rapidly put on weight. Any advice? I am tired of the yoyo 30!

Part of that lie is actually believing food is social, celebratory and emotional. I've chosen to prioritize fuel over all the other aspects and it's been remarkably easy. No balancing on the razors edge trying to juggle everything that food has become. See my life is NOT less-than because I prefer to ask my social circle to meet at the park, or someone's house where I can bring real food, or just skip the resto meal (seriously why do you have to be eating to interact with other people??). My accomplishments are not diminished because I skip putting food stuff in my mouth as congratulations. De-coupling food from these social constructs has been quite liberating.

    • @redefiningstrengthOC
      @redefiningstrengthOC  6 месяцев назад +1

Depends on how long the sessions are and the other intensity of your training and goals. HIIT isn't just one interval breakdown either and can be used in different ways. Also make sure to get that strength training in there. So key! Tracking what you're doing to see the results can help you adjust and see if it is right for your goals and needs.

How we plan to support all our systems working together for health begins, for me, with practicing continuum thinking, rather than binary thinking. Continuum thinking is impossible, in my opinion, without being part of a community that supports the practice of it. Finding this community is job one. It involves social skills, discrimination, and gate-keeping, the latter two aspects being particularly difficult because they seem to defy community-building. In my opinion, there is a philosophical juggernaut that must be cracked to be a change agent of your own life.

When we had our first child she had colic for days. And days and days.

After a week it became obvious that everything was bad.

Our daughter was like that too. I finally determined that it was the medicines they had given me to induce labor for 8 hours had crossed the placenta and were giving our little girl bad cramps! Once that metabolized out of her body she was fine. Took a month or more to do so. Next four babies, I delivered with no meds at all. Wasn't going down that road again.

I'm starting to be convinced that if I eat too much dietary fat it makes me gain weight much easier even if I eat in a calorie deficit I track my calories with a food scale measuring spoons and cups but early this year I noticed that I gained weight quickly when I was eating too many beans at that time I was improperly measuring out a serving of beans I was eating more calories than what I thought and those beings made me gain weight quickly so maybe it's some carbs and fats that make the body gain weight faster than others?? Even if it's about how many calories we eat in a day some foods cause the body to store body fat easier than other foods?? People who are on raw food or fruitarian diet claim to eat 3000 calories a day and don't gain weight in fact they're skinny is it because raw foods and fruits don't store as body fat so easily??

Each of us has different macro ratios that work based on our activity level, genetics and even lifestyle balance. And then those macros can impact the number of calories we need. Also making sure our portions are truly the size we need them to be can be key. Even types of foods can impact us each differently!

@@redefiningstrengthOC oh wow so then it is true some food really do intact our weight even healthy Whole foods , the most difficult part about this weight-loss journey is having to eat higher protein than other macros I was eating lots of beans because I thought they have protein but I know they also have lots of carbs , as much as I love carbs I can't deny that eating higher-protein has been benefiting me , but now I'm measuring beans correctly to make sure I don't go over OH if only beans were higher in protein and lower in carbs LOL 😂

I guess what your saying is we really need a pro trainer to help us track everything because there are just to many variables that fluctuate to really know what is working and what isn't. Myth #1 how are we supposed to know how food will impact our over all being? Like how is someone supposed to know if broccoli is no good for them unless a Doctor had diagnosed this. Most people do not have Doctors and even less have access to blood tests to let them know what they are deficient in. I'm 57 and always relatively healthy. I've never had a GP or blood tests done. The only time I see a doctor is in the emergency room to get stitches. Myth 2 You cant be in a calorie deficit, yet our body adapts to using less calories. Seems like a contradiction. Focus on tracking macros? Myth 3 HIT is good but don't over do it. Then I guess I need a trainer to show me when I've reached that point. . Myth 4 don't use trackers because they can be off this makes it harder to track reality. So again a pro trainer and a pro dietician and a Doctor. This is your first video where I'm left feeling....... I either need to be rich to afford all the professional monitoring and coaching or obsessed and or a professional trainer myself to loose wait and maintain fitness as I get older.
