- In this video I show you a relatively new aluminum upgrade for your BMW engine. I upgrade the factory plastic power steering pulley on my 2008 BMW 335i to an aftermarket aluminum pulley.
I show you how to install it and talk about what can happen if your original factory pulley fails.
If you would like to purchase one for your N54 you can do so here (affiliate):

By the time you're done replacing the plastic parts with available aluminum parts this is gonna be the most reliable N54 in the world lol
Literally my goal.
Hopefully they start making aluminum gaskets
and the heaviest
@@damaestro5667 worth the weight just knowing your engine isnt going to grenade
@@damaestro5667 he weighed this in the video lol factory was 4.4oz and metal was 5.2oz. I think the car will be fine gaining .8 of an ounce lol 😂
Thanks for the inspiration, will be upgrading my factory plastic pieces to some sort of metal going forward! Dude you are the best! Really appreciate how thorough you are with explanations and tools needed!
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 thanks for continuing to share your knowledge on the e90. I’ll hoping to keep mine going for a long time.
Plus, kudos on increasing the production value. Nice to see the video quality boosted. 👌🏼
Another great vid! Whenever I need any info I go straight to your page. Your videos have been a lot of help
Learning so much from your channel! Thank you! 🙌🏼
My favorite DIY channel for the amount of in depth knowledge and consistent uploads you offer.
One advice i would like to offer with your RUclips channel is to update the clickbait titles on the tutorial videos after about a week has passed and most of your subscribers have seen it.
The reason for this is that there are lots of people who will be searching for your exact topic months or even years from now but they'll skip your video since the title had too little info.
Love the channel I watch all your videos, even the ones I don't plan on attempting for a long time
Thanks! I've been loading up the tags section to hopefully help them pull up in search but I'll look into that.
I agree I've been watching all because I like BMW and follow your stuff but as someone who just looks for a DIY titles wouldn't point me there!
Yes 💯. You'll be making money on these videos for years to come if they can be found easily. Love the channel
Heh, I saw this comment right after making a similar one. They definitely look like click bait titles sometimes, though I have yet to see him be wrong that either a cheap part, or a part you don't pay attention to much, could suddenly kill your engine or leave you stranded.
Love this channel. Easily the best 335i videos on RUclips. Keep up the good work.
always love your videos, you've kept my 335i alive!
Great video! Solid technical details and quality, well done.
Thank you thank you so much for the knowledge you share in each and every video you upload. I really appreciate it.
Man, I have an n55 engine on a 2011 335i, and this is the exact issue I am fixing today. My car ate a belt, and I didn't know why until I replaced the belt and heard some noise. When I visually inspected the belts in motion, I saw a shadow of movement from frayed parts of a belt on that pulley. After I turned the car off, I could see the broken edges of the pulley. I'm new to the n55 world, so RUclips vids like this have been a lifeline.
Video and lighting is incredible !
Very nice upgrade! Dutch regards, Nico.
I have an 07 I will be buying this. Thank you!
your videos are always awesome, i appreciate you keeping up with them on the n54/e90 platform
Kinda says something tho eh? Even tho he has a brand new b58 he still wants to do all this work to the n54 to keep it up and running well
@@kaelanburke2097 my thoughts exactly. The b58 is a sexy beast and I'm mad jealous, but the n54 will always have a place in any owner heart, imo.
@@DemonChicken316 oh bro trust me the new b58 is amazing but I think when it comes time to upgrade I'm gunna go with the big boy BMW. Finna step into the f10/f90 M5 depends on price at the time my 335i dies
I love your videos, I just bought a pos 335i. I should’ve done more research when buying it🤦🏼♂️ but, I’m very glad you’re making videos I couldn’t have fixed anything without you. Do you have any merch rn or any on the way??
Thanks! I'm looking into it.
I had replaced mine with another plastic one when I did my serp belt and luckily my subframe is notched but yeah it's still unnerving!
I just got the Dorman one and it says in the instructions that I might need some special tool to put the aluminium one on. From your vid it doesn't seem like I'm gonna need any special tool lol. Thanks! :D
my plastic pulley was damaged from crossmember contact - with standard suspension. I replaced it with exactly the same as this video 👍
PS, on the belt tensioner (beside the T60) there is a hole you push a nail down to hold the tensioner off.
A bit safer incase you didn't know about it :)
Wait wym where
You can access that pulley and replacement with much less work. I managed to accomplish the belt replacement by jacking front end, only removing the under engine cover and removing one of the air cross pipe torx screws (loosened the other). I pushed belt down into vicinity from the top and placed it on pulleys etc. from underneath, finishing on top when ready for tensioner. I cut the belt I replaced for easier removal from underneath. My belt squeak and subsequent failure was a result of my power steering pump coming loose (the bottom bolt had actually fallen into the under cover). Must have not tightened it sufficiently when replacing oil pan gasket. I previously installed a crank seal pulley guard.
great job. bmw bible and you are the apostle
Good shit that pulley mite fit other Bmw engines too what’s the size look the same as n62 pulley
Thank you for sharing
one comment here-- I used the URO aluminum oil filter cap... it caused major leaking etc. I looked carefully at the threads- the machining was not accurate enough to make a proper seal. That is one park that needs to be plastic.
Good Information, does this effect the 2006 330i or 325i? The detail in you vids are great and thanks for all the help over the years with your DIYs
Thanks, the N52 has its power steering pulley mounted higher up so it doesn't have this issue luckily.
Thanks for these upgrade videos. Like most of us I've got plans for port injection, E85, and upgraded turbos but these videos are what i want to do first. I'm currently FBO plus PR coils, OCC, PCV, etc. Getting these finicky brittle plastic parts swapped out with aluminum ones should make the larger swaps less stressful. Any plans for AN lines for the oil cooler or fuel system? I think there is a bracket for the oil filter housing that makes the swap easier. Thanks again.
Thanks, I'll look into that!
Hi there. Good information. Will this part part fit a e90 06 330i ?
I am having like loud like crickets noise sounds like is coming from where this part you showing here . I have a 2010 328i manual transmission. Any way I could send you a video or audio of the sound perhaps you could help me to figure out what the problem is ?
Thank you for your videos
Omg really bmw? thanks for the video bro.
Does this fit the n52 as well? My car is also shredding belts and I just put a new one on yesterday. Already see the sides getting thinner in one day. Already ordered a new pulley tensioner, and the drive belt idler pulley. Was wondering if I should also get this?
Great find! I would NEVER have imagined a plastic auxiliary pulley connected to the main drive belt of the engine. I mean seriously; I wonder how much did BMW actually save on that cheap plastic POS part to justify such a crap engineering decision??? WTH were they thinking?!? 😤 Anyway, thanks once again for identifying a quality replacement aftermarket from ÜRO Premium. As my 135i is still under construction I just went ahead and ordered one of these through your link today.
Do you know the exact diameter of the Halo rings you installed? I can't find a kit anywhere for an lci with xenons that will glue onto the existing Halo rings. Thanks in advance!
Will this work on my n55 135i?
Bullet proofing 👍. Put all the miles on the work horse and save wear an tear on the new one. Make sense.
My pulley is absolutely shattered and seized on, What should I do to get it off?
Will this stop the belt from going into the crank if it snaps or do I still need one of the crank seal guards?
Curious about the p/s res
I bought this part from ECS Tuning, but the pulley isn’t sitting all the way down. Any insights?
Hopefully you reply
I was installing the upgraded aluminum pulley and in the process I moved the belt moving the crank pulley. My question would be if that would cause my car to not be in time anymore?
2 of 3 bolts in my power steering pulley completely broke off so now it’s loose hanging by 1 bolt only. What can I do
recently ran over an animal and had this happen. Knew it was a possibility so immediately shut off the car after coming to a stop and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the pulley. It EXPLODED with such force it cut my intercooler to charge pipe boot to shit. Love the car, hate the company.
As always...Your DIY's are my go to when I need to do something to my e90 even if I have an idea how to get about doing it because all the small details you include. Great videos.
Ordering mine today!!! Another great video!! If the N63s are still $3700 you could do engine swap on X5🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
Its sitting at 63k miles and I can already hear some pulley bearing noises developing. If the car had a lot of miles on it at $3700 that would be super tempting.
What's that electronic torque wrench
So I had this issue happen to me and I bought a Vargas crank seal guard and I was fine and it happened again with a small accident. Is there a seal behind the power steering pulley I would have to worry about?
Love your videos. Any issues with the pulley yet? No ratings for that part on ECS. I have the same car but white. Noticed odd knocking noise the other day and after doing a little research I felt like it was the pump or the pulley. Removed the belt and found that the pulley was loose, even though the bolts were tight. The bolt holes are oblong as if they wore out. Thinking about ordering same part
Thanks, so far the pulley is still good.
Work for n52 engine? Bmw e92 ?
I always see you use silicone spray but read a few posts with BMW mentioning it's not recommended ?
After going through the rebuild, absolutely no one would want to leave any chances of failure cuz very less people know the pain behind it.
I need that metal pulley for when I do the serpentine belt. The belt sucking into my 07 335i crank is my worst fear with that car lol. The electronic torque wrench you're using is very nice, is there a link for that?
Hey no I actually got it at Harbor Freight. They have a 20% off coupon you could use.
Awesome
Screw that screw!
I think I've lost at least 200hrs of my life to taking the covers off just to take that damn screw out.
I was unlucky but lucky.
This happend to me, fortunatly nothing got sucked in.
The belt snapped of the moment I turned off the engine - I had no idea it happend.
Moments after when I started the car, I had no steering - about 30s later the warning "Charging fail" appeared.
And that's when I knew the belt had snapped of.
The pully was litterly missing the part where the belt can't run over.
It just happened to me today, a good Chunk from the pulley broke off, I’m getting the aluminum for durability on my n52
Ty mines broke down r
Anyone know if this issue with a failing belt going through the crank seal can also happen on the N52 engine ?
Yes I have heard from a few different mechanics that it can happen to a N51 and N52 engine as well
Is this a problem on 2010 ? I guess it might be notched but probably still good idea to replace .
On a 2010 your subframe would be notched so its very unlikely to happen. That being said the pulley could still fail with heat cycles and time given its plastic but I wouldn't sweat it too much.
Hi there, been watching your channel from time to time as i have an N54 application on an 08 F02, so 740Li, 240 kw, plain stock, no mods whatsoever. Lately i have seen some very very fine glitter in the oil filter housing. No chunks or bits, just glitter. One morning the car had a nasty knocking sound (few months ago). Turned it off and then on again, noise went away. Timing chain in very good condition, sounds perfect in all conditions, no smoke, pulls like a train, etc, engine around 100k miles. Is my engine on its way out with that glitter or is it normal (hearsay) at this age and mileage ?? Thank you for an answer !
Hey I'd get an oil analysis done to see what material is coming up in the oil. That could steer you in the right direction. Typically seeing any flake in the oil is never good.
@@VehicularDIY thank you, hopefully i can get some 20k-30k miles out of it still, as it's a very fine powder, and not a wide spread of it....sad day. Looks like aluminum, i mean it's white-silverish, but i havent checked if the magnet draws it. I shall try an oil wash/flush and take it from there. If it continues, things are clear.
hey I was researching this last week and found posts on the forums saying these will throw off the balance which is very dangerous. is this something to be concerned about in 2020?
I wouldn't think so, its slightly heavier. That concern comes from people that have installed light weight underdrive crank pullies which didn't have the harmonic balancer integrated. So I wouldn't be concerned.
So I'm in the market for a different car I have always wanted a 335 what year do you recommend I look for and what to look for when I find one. And you you recommend all wheel drive
There are a bunch of things to look out for, I have an old video going over some of the common problems. I'd say 2009 or 2010+. If you're looking to make a lot of power I'd go RWD.
@@VehicularDIY is there a different model you would recommend to have fun as a daily driver. Your videos are very informative and well done.
Looking cool cost alot.
Do e92 x drive bmws also suffer from this same issue? (N54)
Yeah they would as far as I know if you have an early one.
I’m guessing that aluminium pulley would crack too, if it hit the subframe while rotating.
Perhaps the best solution here involves reducing the chance of the pulley hitting the subframe.
So maybe fit a later subframe or different engine mounts.
It wouldn't be impossible but much less likely. Engine mounts are a good bet.
@@VehicularDIY Guess I missed this vid when it came out -- kind of surprised, I view your stuff pretty religiously! Hate to say it, but the aluminum pulley would worry me too. (I mean, not an issue right now I guess, with the engine out! But figured still worth mentioning) I'd probably be more worried about the aluminum pulley *not* cracking -- just constantly hitting the subframe and effing up your PS pump.
There's actually a TSB on this issue (I can dig up the #, if anyone's interested). Says the "correct" fix is replacing the subframe. Like you said, the more common fix is notching the subframe in that position. Easy to find -- it will be the only spot on that subframe that's clean, from all the rubbing and hitting.
Lucky me, when I had this problem I happened to find a front subframe in practically flawless condition from a 2011 135i (double-checked, exact same BMW part # as the indicated replacement subframe) -- was going to put me out right around $200 shipped and measured for trueness. Figured, what the hell, that's a deal, may as well do it right :) Checked my replaced plastic pulley many times since then; it's been about 3 years and no problems whatsoever. Didn't even have to do new engine mounts or anything. The new subframe model doesn't have a notch -- it's actually formed with a smooth dip around that area. Almost impossible to notice unless you have them side by side.
Just happened to me but I'd for to the belt in time
What about the other wheels? are they fine?
Yeah they don't come near the subframe.
Anyone know if this applies to n52 also? I would imagine yes but I don’t know if n54 has it slightly different
The N52 has it's power steering mounted higher up so it can't make contact with the subframe thankfully.
@@VehicularDIY Thanks for the tip! Great job as always.
I thought the N54 has an electric water pump, is that not the case with yours?
It does ya, this was for the power steering pump.
do you have an idea, why my n54 has every time i start it the cold start procedure ? ( i know its an another topic than in this video)
You're saying it idles high even when you start it warm?
@@VehicularDIY yes ;) but not only high... its really like the cold start and i have to wait until the engine get the switch to the normal idle mode ~600 rpm
@@VehicularDIY i´m not sure when this problem exactly came up first time (over 1 year ago) but maybe as a result of the following changes i did around this time: 1. new camshaft sensor (HELLA) , 2. new vanos solenoids (VAICO), 3. new HPF Sensor or the cobb stage 1+ tune
Is there one for the n55

I have a suggestion for your next video.
I finally found a robust, well made replacement connector for the piece of garbage plastic connectors being used in BMW Vacuum Lines.
These GARBAGE connectors OUTGASS, BECOME BRITTLE, CRACK, LOSE TOLERANCES, in as little as 3 to 4 years of ownership of your new BMW.
They are a real pain in the ass because they must be dealt with when you are servicing other parts of the engine. AND THEY WILL BREAK when handling them by you or the mechanic working on the car.
They are ONE of the many causes of LEAN CONDITIONS, LIMP MODE, and ADDITIONAL unneccessary COSTS when working on the engine.
Do yourself a favor and use these connectors and you will never have to buy new ones again.
The best part is you can find these connectors rated for:
1. Very high temperatures, >200 DEGREES FARENHEIT!
2. Rated for HIGH PRESSURE
3. RATED for OIL, GAS & many other corrosive liquids.
4. Are made of TOUGH, ROBUST Plastic or Metal.
5. Much better design mechanism to CONNECT & DISCONNECT.
6. OH AND THE COST!!! How does spending ONCE ONLY ~$25 (never again) for both the bayonet (Male) & receptacle (Female) for each end of the hose/ pipe/ tube ends.
7. They are made with a BARBED end to slide easily and grip securely inside a hose/ pipe/ tube in many many diameters, 2" to 1/4"
8. They also come with a Threaded end in many Thread Pitches, Metric & Standard dimensions.
Just a MILLION TIMES better made than the GARBAGE, ORIGINAL, OEM German design.
There is only one catch they are ugly as all hell.
But, they will out last the car!!!
They are Type-E & Type-C Camlock Connectors.
Do yourself a favor and replace the garbage that came with the car and never have to replace another connector again.
Heat up the plastic hose and remove the OEM connector. Heat the Hose up again and install the camlock connector.
Or replace the plastic hose with a High Pressure Direct Injection Hose that will never rot, or crack with your new connector.
I hate getting that fan back in with upgraded inlets!! Or in general…Sucks!!
The n54 535 has an aluminum one ..I took it off in a junk yard 10.bucks
So you can just pull pulley out without Puller?? just using your hands??
Yeah it comes off and goes on by hand.
@@VehicularDIY Did you have issues removing yours? I removed the 3 bolts and have tried to push by hand from all angles. Can not move it. Any advice?
I should mention my PS pulley has a crack and I suspect it destroyed the belt and shattered it into 100 pieces and threads. Many of the treads were tangled around this pulley but managed to remove them. I am about to take the car to a mechanic... until I saw that it actually comes off by hand. :(
Does this apply to the n52 as well?
No the N54 has the pump mounted higher up so this isn't an issue luckily.

is that WD40 or Silicone spray lubricant?
That was WD40.
It's really pathetic and disgusting that there's so much plastic beep crammed into places where it has no business being. How do those BMW guys sleep at night - a pothole can destroy your engine????!!! However, there's lots to hate about Mustang, Camaro, Genesis, Cadillac, Lexus, Acura, Infiniti, or Audi too. I may cave in and rebuild an e92. Can you list all the plastic parts that you've been able to find metal replacements for with enough info for us to track them down for purchase? Otherwise, thanks for sharing your repair experiences - so valuable and useful.
I plan on doing a summary video once I'm done with all the aluminum upgrades.
So many dam plastic part to upgrade in these BMWs
What about E60 N54?
E60 should have enough clearance for this not to be an issue.
@@VehicularDIY Thank you. You know, your channel gave me the courage to tackle oil filter housing, valve cover and oil filter housing gasket. It's taking me days but getting there. Love you channel.
Should I just change all my pulleys ?😭
the other ones can't hit the subframe
Hey brother i know i sound like a broken record, lol, but when are you takin this car to the track?
Hey it's all good, I will be upgrading to a large case differential and swapping in a full LSD and changing the axles and installing the proper manual driveshaft along with a diff brace. Hopefully over the next few months. I hope to go with my current setup now just to see what kind of MPH.
@@VehicularDIY how about a dyno day in the meanwhile just to see how much power its putting to the wheels
That new pulley at .8 of an ounce heavier will slow your 0-60 time by .000025. Not worth it. 😂😂😂. Just kidding thank you for the info. I had no idea.
So this isn't necessary for 2009 335i
If you have a 2009 the subframe would be notched so there should be enough clearance where the upgrade to aluminum wouldn't be 100% necessary.
Only thing I don't understand is how it can be "sucked up" by the engine.
gets sucked up into the crank, that's how. Happened to mine.
It's funny how so many of your video titles sound like click bait. Then I watch, and once again you're right that some stupid $30 part could easily wreck my entire engine.
You and FCP Euro are the best sources for repair videos on my E90 I've found. The only possible improvement I could think of is if your descriptions linked to some of your other videos on related work. Like, if you're doing this, it's probably worthwhile to ask if your serpentine belt, pulleys, and tensioners are due soon. Then, if you're already removing the radiator fan for that, is the water pump due, or do you still have original coolant hoses with the plastic fittings instead of the improved Rein ones with aluminum fittings. Then, since you're already that far in, maybe do the power steering flush too. ruclips.net/video/yWZ3KjoHp_Y/видео.html
Yes sir, the OEM plastic pulley sucks ass
Throw the damn car away, plastic pulley?! NO car should ever need a upgrade like this from factory.
@Sammy Phillps have you ever driven a BMW? Nothing about them is cheap. They used plastic parts because in the late 2000s it was believed that that was the best choice of material.
@@renderyours510 stop it
Krikey, the original pulley doesn't look like plastic.
Imagine losing your engine as a result of that shit plastic failing! Like you said, it does happen.
Btw, have you replaced the plastic "Mickey Mouse" coolant flange or is that a N52/N20 only engine? FCP did a video on a N52 1er where the plastic failed while driving. Literally disintegrated from the inside of the elbow.
I have yeah, its a few videos back.
@@VehicularDIY Cool, I’ll have a look. Thx!
Was that the thermostat flange video? I had watched that one actually. 👍🏻
I was actually referring to the other end of that coolant hose that connects up near the oil filter housing, at least on the N52.
Flange looks very similar to the thermostat end as you showed a couple of videos back.
Thanks for the awesome content! Much appreciated.
are you listening. BMW?
Or you could avoid really big bumps
The way you deal with BMW cars , seems like they are toys ... not cars 🙂
Just get an Audi 😏
What is wrong with these BMW engineers? They must have been imported from China using plastic running parts anywhere on an engine.
I'd be ashamed to call myself German if I did a thing like that!
