I love Helen. I have been intensely studying oil painting for the last 3 or 4 years and consider 7 or so artists on youtube to be my teachers. But when I found Helen about a month ago, she answered 3 pressing questions that I had that that no one else did. That allowed me to get unstuck and finish a painting that I had been working on for 7 months. I can tell she is totally sincere and pure in her desire to teach the student.
Rereading your comment and my initial reply this morning, I realized I didn’t fully capture the significance of your story, and for that, I apologize. I now better understand how much Helen’s teachings have meant to you, and I want to emphasize how inspiring it is to hear that her lessons helped you complete a painting after months of hard work. Your experience is a powerful reminder of the impact her guidance continues to have on artists like yourself. Thank you again for sharing and supporting the channel. It is very much appreciated.
Thanks for your enthusiastic comment. Helen’s lessons are full of great tips. I hope you can find time to view some of her other lessons. By the way, if you use subtitles and come across a lesson without a French translation, please let us know. Thanks for posting.
Sad to say but Helen passed away in 1994 but I’m sure she would be grateful for your kind words. She was a fantastic artist and teacher. More of Helen's lessons to come so watch for them. Thanks for posting.
You are welcome! We will continue to remaster Helen's lessons so she can keep teaching and inspiring artists, both young and old. Your feedback means a lot and it is appreciated.
You are new to me and I love your generous and succinct teaching. 55 yrs ago I began oil painting with a beautiful model. I had to stop because I was extremely nauseous from the chemicals. Turns out I was 1 month pregnant ❤. So I am now 55 yrs later intrigued by your style and lovely work. And your sense of humor will make me able to retain your stories. Thankyou soon much
Thank you for sharing your story. It’s amazing to hear about your journey with oil painting, and what a memorable reason to pause all those years ago. We're so glad Helen's style and humor resonate with you now. She had a way of making lessons both enjoyable and insightful. We hope her teachings continue to inspire you-thank you for your kind words and support.
Concordo plenamente! É maravilhoso ver artistas descobrindo o trabalho incrível de Helen. Obrigado pelo seu comentário e apoio. Couldn't agree more! It’s wonderful to see artists discovering the incredible work of Helen. Thanks for your comment and support.
That's it, she reminds me of Kate McKinnon 😂, I was wondering who she reminded me of , I love this lady, she is so talented and has a great voice and lovely features
Good tip. Yes, I also use odorless mineral spirits, but I also wear nitrile gloves to keep solvents and paint off my hands. If you look closely, Helen's hands are covered with paint, and I'm sure turpentine too. Prolonged exposure to these substances over 50+ years surely could have affected her health.
Gamsol may be slightly better, or appears so because there’s less odor. Still toxic. Odorless doesn’t mean less toxic. Think carbon monoxide as an example/analogy. One can paint solvent free tho. Even linseed oil off gassing can have adverse effects. I use walnut oil paints and walnut oil as medium if needed
Dear Helen. You have made Glazing clear to me. Thanks. I have a still life vase in umber and white I've been stuck on. I feel like I can go ahead and tackle it now. I really appreciate it. I think your arrangement is excellent. May I have your permission to use your composition layout as the backbone of of a painting of my own. I will change it up so as not to infringe on your creation. Thank you again for the lessons you have demonstrated for us. Karl
It's great to hear how Helen's glazing lesson has inspired you to continue working on your vase painting. Helen had a remarkable talent for teaching, and she clearly loved every moment of it, as seen in her lessons. However, I cannot advise you on using the compositions of other artists. While it’s common for students to copy works for practice and learning, it’s important to note they don't present them as their own work. Thanks for posting...it’s much appreciated. I hope you enjoy the other lessons as well.
Thanks for the question. I believe Helen used Grumbacher paints. Also, She used to give painting demonstrations to promote that company's products. The smoothness you notice could also be due to the canvas being prepared with a light wipe of turpentine. (She mentioned that in one of her lessons). Hope you are enjoying the lessons.
Sadly, Helen passed away in 1994 and cannot answer you directly. This video contains two lessons. In the second lesson, which focuses on glazing, she uses a medium consisting of equal parts turpentine, damar varnish, and linseed oil.

Τhankyou Helen you are the best
Helen was using turpentine back in years. Now we have much better GAMSOL.

Great tip about the nitrile gloves. Hope more people see your tip.
@@Java42Mobile I wear left gloves only.
I am painting with my right hand and
at the end of the session I may use
the fingers to finish 😂

How is her paint so movable on the canvas? The paint moves so easily.
❤
Just found you and my first thought when i started watching , she’s the Julia Child of painting☕️🎨🌹❤️
I think being compared to Julia would have been incredibly flattering to Helen. Hope you continue to enjoy and be inspired by her lessons .
😂she makes it look so easy! Thank you!
Yes but Helen's lessons are here to teach so keep watching and practicing.
