To do this live infront of a worldwide audience of tens of millions takes a huge amount of confidence and self-belief.
And around a hundred thousand hours of practice time. (that's about 10 hours a day for 30 years BTW)
@@TheMinecraftACMan to be fair that much practice on a trumpet would be counter productive, Id bet his actual practice hours are more in line in a couple 10,000 hours
You might stone me to death for what I am about to say, but I´m pretty confident it´s not live, it´s pre-recorded. James Morrison is an incredible trumpet player, however I still think he wouldn´t be able to play it this clean and to hit that (I think it´s triple C in English) C at the end. Also when you look at his face and compare it to what he normally looks like when playing high notes, he looks quite relaxed here. But that´s just my opinion, I might be wrong.
@@janlansky4672 hitting a triple c isn’t too hard for the best of players, and all the face scrunching is really just for show and or not necessary. Almost all reputable trumpet players can play in the upper range stone faced
@@janlansky4672 I studied under James last year, the band track was pre recorded but not his.
James Morrison is terrifyingly good at playing brass instruments.
it's like he doesn't even try
I wish he also played music
He also is insane on the piano… its ridicules!! 🤯 really, just try to play trumpet for a few years and you know that this playing is from another world 😂
He also plays saxophone and guitar
@@tristenfuller3886 oh my god this man is not human
I love how this score is so useful for a beginner like me! I'll get to practicing
lmao
I know, it’s the first thing I learned on my imaginary trumpet! All my non-existing friends were impressed
Better be a flute player
I’ll play that an octave lower and get my lips burned to death. You best be a pianist or flutist
Maybe even try an octave higher 😊
We're reaching jazz levels that shouldn't be possible!
"Jazz is about the notes you DON'T play." He tells me.
And now I lie awake at night, tormented.
Bombarded by the ceaseless, silent melodies.
I am my own undoing.
The quiet makes it louder.
Thus I remain, forever cursed by this knowledge: I am never not playing jazz
That swing seems pretty unreachable as well
The brass readings are off the charts!
@@TheBobcatlover That's not really true and the analogy is misdirected. It's more like: in silence/nothingness, all things exist in superposition, in the background of reality. Basically, infinite everything is happening in nothing. As soon as you play a single note everything polarizes around it and your brain perceives pitches as being different and having different emotional qualities in different contexts based on how, what ever is being played relates to where ever the most consonant Ionian mode exists, regardless of it being played ever, if at all. Music is formulaic, meaning as you use more different notes, you leave less room for things to be open ended and "implied". Jazz is simply adding extra layers of complexity to a piece of music, whether it's extra harmonies, intervals, dissonance, Rhythm, etc. This is why it is recieved by many people negatively... Extra complexity in music, doesn't always mean better... With that said, I like jazz and understand it and have found works of genius in the genre, but TBH, I just like simple diantonic modal music way more then any Jazz. It's hard for me to comprehend how people tune in on it and get really good at making it... TBH, "jazz" is used to describe too much drastically different music and it's hard to even know what people are talking about, when they try to define it all at once. 😆
@@dickrichard626 this is the woshiest woosh I have ever seen.
Don’t you just hate when you play everything an octave higher with flawless, crisp, perfect tone?
Oh yeah. Getting tired of playing these Maynard like pieces perfectly.
Just the worst feeling.
Its a piccolo trumpet
@@ZERO-ky8vm first off, it's not - second, as a trumpet player who owns a piccolo trumpet, it does not make it any easier to play higher.
also like those staccato 16th notes really high
the score looks like a flute score holy hell
It's certainly in the bright flute range, but very possible for solid trumpet players who are trained for such notes.
As a flute player this looks normal, and definitely not for trumpet
Pov: the creator likes your comment so much that it gets used as the videos title
@@deejay3ever681 lmaooo i just saw
@@deejay3ever681 What was the title at first?
I don’t play trumpet but just how it sounds I can assume it’s very difficult
Yes and with the clarity that he’s playing those high notes at is amazing
difficult isn't even close to describe this
Any normal person’s lips would be gone if they tried to reach the notes hes reaching
I don’t think the trumpet is necessarily even made to go that high but somehow he defies logic
For reference, most trumpeters will struggle for months to reach the top of the stave when they’re learning to play
The national anthem performance that follows this fanfare is *amazing*
It's so good! ruclips.net/video/JoZ7QziVSDg/видео.html
@@jackhollis3903 thank you for the link, that version is really special for sure
as a trumpet player I can confirm he's playing a trumpet.
As a saxophone player, I thought he was playing the saxophone!
As a guitar player, I was sure he played the bass.
are you really sure though?
as a percussionist, I could have sworn he was playing a vibraphone
Wait, that's not a contrabass clarinet?
Only trumpet players know how hard that is. That level of sound quality on those notes for that period of time is ridiculous.
Its hard. Just not a fanfare
Incredible but true
i feel like most people who play brass instruments can understand
I actually think you can only really really appreciate this if you have played trumpet for some years. Absolutely insane.
That long sustained note he did is a double high G. The closest I ever got to that was an E two whole steps below that, even after playing for several years. He’s holding that G for like 10 seconds and makes it sound easy. I mean I’ve heard guys hit higher than that, but still this is crazy impressive.
Wow James Morrison has really lived an eventful life
you're saying it like hes dead lol
I can’t even comprehend how much time he had to put into the trumpet to even be able to do that, none the less at a huge event
Not a lot lol because he has to keep up the doubles too
Apparently he doesn’t practice
Trumpet isn't his first instrument
All 3 of the previous comments are either irrelevant or wrong
@@Richard_Nickerson that's your own opinion. My statement is relevant in that I'm trying to impress that James is even more skilled than this person might think.
1:51 The floor looks like a video game texture.
Glitch in the matrix - the floor didn't load in properly
The Trumpeter deserves an Olympic Gold Medal. Come on!!
Morrison is unnatural. From playing full chords on trombone to perfect double c’s he can do it all.
I love how whe nit switches to swing everyone's posture goes from uptight and formal to relaxed and lazy which beautifully illustrates that change in rhythm
Typical Australians reading a tuba score upside down and playing it on the trumpet
Yep, James Morrison is trained to hit the G6 to A6, and even higher, just like Arturo Sandoval.
Any novice composer, do NOT expect even first chair trumpet players to hit these notes comfortably, as there is a significant risk of the notes going out of tune.
A good film score to listen to that has these notes is from The Incredibles, scored by Michael Giacchino. These trumpet players are the top-tier.
This can be done, G6 and higher, but there are few who can do so without quick burnouts and notes going out of tune.
lol (young composer here)
@@standporter, no issues being a young composer, just know the orchestration. That is AWESOME to meet a fellow composer!
@@trevorjensen2706 Wow, you're a composer too - are you a pro? What stuff do you do?
@@standporter, I am working on a Masters Degree for Film Scoring, where I will be scoring music for films, T.V., and/or video games.
How about yourself?
@@trevorjensen2706 Your path sounds really exciting, tbh. I'm a college senior (in a non-music major) who happens to love music and composing. I've had several works performed in public, the latest being a string orchestra piece for my youth orchestra. I love music theory. Oh, and by the way, I play piano and trumpet. What styles are your areas of expertise/favorites?
The dislikes are the people who can’t play this high
then pretty much everyone should dislike lmao
And the likes are also people that cant play that high
Im in 7th grade and i can play up to double g
these comments don't work anymore :(
i, unfortunately can bc i play piccolo so different story 😼👍
man is still incredibly talented
This makes perfect sense.
In early modern olympics they had competitions in poetry and architecture.
But in the classic olympics they had competitions for heralds and trumpeters. Coming full circle.
as a trumpet player, I saw the first note and almost passed out 😂
I saw that note, realized that the highest note I’ve played is almost an octave lower, then considered taking up percussion instead.
@@emilyrattini8462 definitely yes.
The mosquito in my room at 3 am
This comment made me laugh really hard thank you
0:59 that cymbalist is really jazzing out!
going full dance mode 😅
That moment when youre told to write a jazzy but also regal fanfare, so you end up just awkwardly swapping between the two
I had the pleasure of meeting Morrison backstage at one of the Salvation Army Christmas Gift concerts (I was singing as part of the choir) and he was one of the nicest performers I've ever met, happy to chat too, we talked for a good 30 minutes about composition before he had to go.
And believe me when I say you cannot believe the projection bouncing from stage side of Hamer Hall to the seats and then back again to the bass section of the choir about 1.5 seconds after he initially played it. No mic or accompaniment and this man can fill a hall for sure.
This is my favourite clip and I'm so glad you transcribed it!
James Morrison is just savage. Thanks for uploading this!
How casually he's playing that high tho
That ending sounds like violins, holy hell.
Totally brilliant. Gives me the shivers. I wish I could do that!!
The fact that he can do that on a standard B-Flat without having to use a piccolo is truly impressive.
Not true. Same insane level of difficulty to do this on a piccolo. Different, more "bell-like" sound, though.....
@@thomaslechner1622 it's a little bit "easier" on piccolo since there's half the risk to crack/miss a note
This is only mouthpeace and anatomy, not arts, not heart, he is a crocodile, a power machine as Sandoval also. That is a subculture. The sport of the trumpet. Many people likes it as for example the boxing. Your amazement can not be stronger than your heart, and your ears. If you haven't heart, you can not recognize those things... He is amazing, I would like to have those abilities, but I'm glad and satisfied without those...
@@thomaslechner1622 Exactly. That concept is so misunderstood by people - including many trumpet players. Piccolo trumpet playing is a whole different ballgame.
The 'Walzing Matilda' motif is gloriously Aussie.
This has to be the most impressive display of efficient trumpet playing I've ever seen
Amazing chops!
Bro doesn’t get headaches, he gives them. Like quite literally, my head is hurting from hearing how high he’s playing
Thanks for the score, I love light warm ups I can work on my low notes with.
*Perfect intonation..., soulful phrasing..., and portamentos so smooth and even, you'd swear it was played on a slide instrument...* 👏
yo how tf he do staccato 16ths that high above the staff? This mans a legend
うますぎる…高音がすごく綺麗で安定していて、なおかつ聞こえてくる
Solo player is very wonderful sound!! His high-tone is far clear and stable and also great.
His lungs are bigger than my dreams in life
Absolutely incredible! Thanks for the dopamine!
This is awesome!
Brilliant stuff
Unbelievably good !!! 👏👏👏
he was in the doors, right? 🤩😂 (i know, i know…cool down).
james….what a fucking cat!
That was the smoothest March to jazz transition I’ve ever heard
Hey, my parents knew Miles personally. Enough of my banter, your presentation goes to the TOP of music videos. Congrats from this side of the pond, mates! EXCELSIOR!
I can't even play a high D consistently man.....
Saaammeee
I can barely play a high f clearly and can only play high e consistently man, this is crazy
James Morrison and his band entertained us at a conference I attended at the Fairmont Resort in Leura in the Blue Mountains in 1988. Absolutely brilliant.
Not just the range, but he stays up there for a long time, and in tune!
Fantastic.
I remember watching this live. Hard to believe that it was 22 years ago!!!
I think this piece gives me the shivers every fricking Time i Hear it...
Great instrumentation
What an awesome "humans are awesome" moment! I almost cried.
They're even colour coded I love this
It's insanely good, I wanna cry.
The strength of this man's chops are unprecedented
Amazing
did they sneak waltzing matidla in there?
I KNEW that sounded familiar
The description hit me in the feels. I was the same way. Could never play higher the third octave B flat. Everyone kept saying it had something to do with the mouthpiece I was using, but I never had the money to buy a new one, and then after moving when I turned 21, I lost all 3 of my trumpets. 😔
Well do I remember my days as an elementary school trumpeter. Playing like this would have caused a ragged semi-circle of flesh to be cut out of my upper lip.
that swing section went so hard and it only lasted 15 seconds
That’s actually insane
"Insert typical player here"
As a saxophonist and band teacher... Jesus christ... After nailing the first note on cue like no one ever has or could since,... the rest was just a fanfair to his own aptitude. Well done, sir.
I agree. I remember this like it was yesterday!
I saw this man live when I was about 12. for the next month I tried to figure out how to play 2 notes at a time, 3 instruments at a time, or even any one of his incredible skills. no one got me to practice like he did.
My college band director was the director of bands for this, shout out Barry Spanier!
0:54 goddamn that was smooth
James Morrison led my stage band in a session back in 1997 at the Melbourne Bands Festival. Even in the most basic concepts I can tell you, he is this amazing as an instructor.
Jesus, I can feel my chops swelling just watching this.
bros chops are impeccable
The tonguing on those high notes is actually crazy
JORGE UPLOADED
I have nothing special to say. This is just epic, nothing more to say.
Beautiful, kinda took the "flute score" a little bit too serious bc of the transcription being in concert C. lol
My lips went numb just watching this!
there weren't any violins in this performance?
love your videos! thank you.
insanity!
watching this made me light headed 🥲
bass trombonist is gettin' it too
This is an Olympic performance of its own
SUPERB!
I think this video should be titled “When you’re JIM MORRISON”😂😂😂
goosebumps...
This made my face hurt just listening to it, his embouchure is astonishing!
Yoo that's sick as h**l
Guy bringing the symbals in 0:56 ...best man ;)
This song inspired me to extend my range go from a high c to a double g in less then a month. I’m in 10th grade right now and I’ve gone up an octave in a year but with this video that honestly wouldn’t be possible. Truly inspiring.
Worry more about your tone and control rather than just range. Range means nothing if it sounds bad and out of control
Eu estava atrás dessa relíquia
Damn, he did the Scream Machine introduction and it sounds Awesome!!!!
Amazing Horns! ❤️ 😍 💖
Haven't heard anything this good since Maynard Ferguson.
The marvel at Mr morisson s high Gs is the fact that they are clear, precise , and not strained ! Perfect embouchure
WOW!!!!! Glorioso!!!!!
Who needs a piccolo trumpet when you can do this! Wow!
The effortless high notes is what does I for me
When they say "if I can do it so can you" or "With enough practice, anyone could achieve the same"
I disagree. Some people are just born different.
this makes me proud of my country ^w^
🔥
Not a single solitary boomerang.
Frankly I'm pissed.
I think I speak for brass players' lips everywhere when I say: ouch.
