I think this comes down to our perceptions of what a big football club is. Man Utd are massive commercially and this is about the explosion in the popularity of football generally when they happened to start winning things again. These commercial indicators can be misleading as there are now clubs who appear to be bigger than they are because they have invested before winning things.

Liverpool fan here and unfortunately, Man U are bigger than Liverpool. Man U have one more trophy or have the same amount of trophies as Liverpool, but Man U have more online and offline fans, more revenue, sell more merchandise, and have more sponsors.
Manchester United became so popular due to their dominance under Ferguson.
I think this comes down to our perceptions of what a big football club is. Man Utd are massive commercially and this is about the explosion in the popularity of football generally when they happened to start winning things again. These commercial indicators can be misleading as there are now clubs who appear to be bigger than they are because they have invested before winning things.

I'm a Liverpool season ticket holder born and bred here but MU are the biggest club in England. Their fanbase is bigger than ours and their social media followers are way bigger than ours. Only Real Madrid are probably bigger than them in world football. Liverpool are second in the UK but even MC are getting more social media followers than us on some platforms. I've noticed Liverpool aren't that popular in America compared to MU and Chelsea. Asia is where we're big. MU have massively underachieved in Europe though, 3 CL trophies is poor.
Liverpools tours of America drew bigger crowds than Chelsea. Liverpool are probably the biggest English club in America along with United. I don't think United are bigger anymore there.

@@derkbruinsma9351 Thailand, Malaysia etc too. In South America they have become quite popular due to the Brazilian players. And the likes of Diaz from Columbia. Liverpool are highly followed in Columbia. Moreso than other English clubs.
We have not used social media as a true indicator here as it might be viewed as superficial. It only takes into account the last few years and a certain type of follower. They are also related to self-promotion, which smaller clubs like Chelsea have become good at due to the amount of money they had to spend, which did not come from football.
