So I google my band name and lo behold this video pops up on the top ten searches and I was like "Huh I haven't checked in in a while I wonder how many views this has?" then I saw the numbers..... 214,087. One spit take and replaced laptop screen later I returned to notice the thumbs up to thumbs down ratio and I got a warm fuzzy feeling inside. Thank you internet. Thank you very much!
I feel like this would be a major musical number in a musical with the lead (a female captain of a navy (?) airship) is questioning her ability to keep her men and women soldiers safe in the upcoming battle and it would have the epic lighting and costumes and it'd be all dramatic and just at the end you have a slow motion like choreography of the battle and then the curtains close. this is breathtaking
I heard this song in a playlist and it recently cycled in my head after finishing a tough day. I madly searched for it and have found it again. Relief.
along with what Cahircz said it is based off the 19th century when steam power was still widely used. there is a wikipedia page on it also with a good amount of info
I went through a huge steampunk phase back in middle school (still love it don't get me wrong) and this is one of the songs that has stuck with me through that phase. I always use it when my friends are doing steampunk DnD games
I wish I could recall how I found this song in the first place all those years ago when I was 16. I’m now 31 and it still gives me chills. I don’t know what possessed me to look it up tonight but I’m so glad I did. I believe I found the band on Spotify but unfortunately not this song, if the band do ever check the comments on this video, if they manage to put it on Spotify, I can assure that there will definitely be one person who’ll be blaring this in their car or while at the gym.
I was given this album by a close friend, and after giving it a listen, all I can say is wow. It sort of changed the way I view music. It's just beautiful. Simply incredible.
This makes me think that there is gonna be a massive and super epic airship battle between good and evil, the am era goes to the caption who then looks at a locket that has a picture of his wife, he looks up with a look of both fear and anger then puts it in his pocket takes out his cutless and then screams charge
In steel and smoke they face today, Of soulless hearts whose mind gone stray. These deathless foes, with gears and blade, That left them all, but husk of shade. Strive of gun and soaking sword, Is not enough, to stop such horde. Beware of now the clockwork dolls, Who rise back up, as deaden thralls.
steampunk isn't a defined sound...it's a defined culture. it's not what you do, it's who you choose to be...WHAT YOU ARE. When punk music hit the scene it didn't always have the same sound, but it did create a culture. punks of the world united and were one. steampunk is the next generation, the next wave, and it's fitting because it shows a world that is fractured and yet advanced. It's what punk wanted to be, but didn't know what it was missing.
heard this one a while ago, was looking for it everywhere after forgetting the name. Now by chance I read the word "impartial" in a victorian setting novel and it clicked. oh my, I am so incredibly happy right now! one of the nicest steampunk music. (especially when I was starting getting into it)
Es una sinfonia hermosa que abre los corazones steampunk de todas partes!!!! Y para los escritores del mundo que compartan este gusto, como yo, es una fuente inacabable de ideas e inspiración... MUY BUENO!!!!!
When I first heard this song it gave me one of those wonderful feelings where i wish i could build an airship and be an airpirate and go on an epic voyage in the sky. Clockwork Dolls are awesome
I don't know why, but for some reason I could imagine a large armada of airships going up against each other whenever I hear this song. Man, what I wouldn't give to be on this ship, with this captain.
Guys, there is a new "Steampunk" game out called Ironcast. This song is pretty much every survival mission in the game up until the boss fight. Yeah. That fucking Gargantuar, That fucking spider with guns. I hate it.
The CD this song is on, Dramatis Personae, is actually officially out-of-print. :-/ You can still buy the digital copy online at amazon or itunes for another month or two. After that, the band is releasing it for free.
@SpaceMarine2007 Actually steampunk in America is going very strong, steampunk music as an emerging genre started in San Fransisco in 2003 and the biggest name in Steampunk Music is right up in Seattle. Some of the biggest conventions in Steampunk are in New Jersey, Seattle, and Michigan. Let's not forget that The Clockwork Dolls is based in Baltimore, MD, which is definitely in the states. Steampunk might not be mainstream like emo but it's not "non existant".
It sounds self important (and I'm sorry) but I'm reminded of something I started writing a while ago! Thanks for this! I have also fallen in love with them and it's inspired me to write! ^_^
This is actually quite lovely, musically speaking. It is drawing back to the great composers of the past that made sonatas and aria's on war. It is just lovely.
Decided to give the Steampunk genre a listen. I've listened to a few songs, but something about them doesn't click for me. At least I gave it a try, though. It may grow on me.
0:00-1:15 Northern Prussia, dawn, winter. Heavy clouds. Camera flies over the land, finding a fleet of British airships on course for Berlin. 1:15 - 1:50 The Impartial - the flagship. Captain singing. 1:50 - 2:33 var. airships prepping for battle - loading guns, locking down bulkheads, arming marines, etc. 2:33 - 3:22 Cpt in quarters at desk, fearful of what's to come. 3:22 - 3:48 Cpt wanders the ship, noting all hands at station, ready for what is to come.
@loveismydestruction The heart of anything steampunk is the application of new techniques with and antique aesthetic or vise versa. In the case of music, this is usually accomplished by combining synth-pop and industrial music with Orchestral music.
5:07 - 6:22 All hell breaks loose. The guns roar, ships explode as hydrogen sacks rupture and ignite. The Impartial is showered in debris but keeps on going, raking a larger Prussian fatally as she passes. The Captain stands upon the bridge, gripping the brass rail of the observation platform. 6:22 The Impartial is hit. The bridge behind her blows out in a slow-motion fireball. She stands defiant, unheeding of the flame. Slow zoom on her face, and fade to black.
Not at all! They're still performing and in the studio. They just changed their line-up a bit. The composer/head honcho, Allison Curval, has promised that new albums will be forthcoming in the near future.
@victorbendix This is true but literature still describes elements which we visualize in our head and the author often takes the time to visualize his/her world prior to or during the writing phase. An aesthetic is the feeling of what is brought up which could also be conveyed just as much through literature as with any other form.
It's really not that hard of a concept to grasp here folks. Steampunk started off as literature where the style and environment was similar to Edwardian era science fiction. The term was coined as a tongue and cheek joke based off of the phrase Cyberpunk and has little to do with punk music. Steampunk music is simply music that takes it's inspiration from the steampunk aesthetic. That's it...there's not that much else to it.
I listen to this and i imagine being on the front of a grand airship heading deep into the clouds, a large battle raging as my pirate crew go to join our bretheren in a last ditch effort to beat the Spanish in battle.
I love to listen to this album when I am working on my book. Someone said elsewehre that this song makes them a thousand times more productive. I have to agree! Thank you for this awesome album.
Some of the best albums are like that. If you're thinking like this you may also like Midnight Syndicate. I always think of their albums as soundtracks for movies yet to be written.
VIVA LA VITA! Yes I know that is another song, I mean the actual phrase! Still, I feel this is basically like a really badass song that should be in guns of icarus as a credits song or something. That, or that one flash game series i cant remember right now... Exact same style of guns of icarus, just as a defense version.
I'm only just getting into Steampunk. Believe it or not, what got me into it was Glimmar's Steampunk Texture Pack for Minecraft. Check it out if you like Steampunk and play Minecraft.
@loveismydestruction alot of people consider it music inspired by the fictional neovictorianist movement of steampunk mainly airships and airship pirates, victorian high-tech engineering. like, bionic parts made out of clockwork. that kind of thing. know what steampunk is you'll know what the music is.
@needlecake I guess one can call it Neo-Victorian music to refer to Steampunk. Perhaps call it historical or atlernative punk, retro-futuristic or uchronian punk as a catch-all to refer to all genre of alternate history which include Dieselpunk, Gaslight romance, Gaslamp fantasy, Cyberpunk and Cyberprep to name a few.
@Nericon Steampunk really describes a literary/visual genre and only recently went into music. Steampunk despite the name has little to do with punk music.
3:48 - 4:28 the British airfleet steams on, frost glinting on their hulls. 4:28 - 5:05 Camera pans away to a Prussian airship fleet, arrayed and ready for war. The two fleets close, with the Prussians clearly outnumbering the British. The fleets close into cannon range and we jump between the factions, seeing the mix of fear and determination in the eyes of the crews.
The Clockwork Dolls halted production of this CD, they'll be releasing this for free on their bandcamp website come December. Stay tuned on their facebook site for details. They have a new album that came out recently that you should definitely check out. theclockworkdolls.bandcamp.com is where you can preview it.
Could anyone please define steampunk music for me? I am a music theory student and this really interests me but I can't find an adequate definition for it. Thank you!

You make fantastic music! This song makes me about a thousand times more productive.
You should upload your music to RUclips so more people can hear it.
+The Clockwork Dolls I love listening to this while i fly my German aircraft in War Thunder!
+The Clockwork Dolls Very few of your songs seem to be on itunes Australia. Are they available somewhere else?

14 years ago this song inspired the characterization of one of my favorite pirate OCs.
This is nostalgic!
Over 11 years later, and this composition is still nothing short of a true masterpiece.
I completely agree
👍

Hell this would be epic if it was a female General or queen in her tent before a big battle.
Suddenly, I came up with a name for an airship in my dnd campaign
I am still gobsmacked this was made by three people. They've done more for electro-symphonic music than anyone.
Meeting the Clockwork Dolls in person was awesome :s
Sitting down with them for tea was great!
I heard this song in a playlist and it recently cycled in my head after finishing a tough day. I madly searched for it and have found it again. Relief.

I'm sure EVERYONE can imagine a whole story based on this song. And it is an awesome story.
I wish I could recall how I found this song in the first place all those years ago when I was 16. I’m now 31 and it still gives me chills. Oh... Many Steampunk, So airship!
One of the best. :)
This is actually so powerful. Does anyone else get millions of writing ideas from this?
In steel and smoke they face today,
Of soulless hearts whose mind gone stray.
These deathless foes, with gears and blade,
That left them all, but husk of shade.
Strive of gun and soaking sword,
Is not enough, to stop such horde.
Beware of now the clockwork dolls,
Who rise back up, as deaden thralls.
This is cool.
Huh?
damn...this sounds badass
Man, nice writing
João Vítor Costa
👌
This, this is my battle song...
Not only is this song amazing, but the Clockwork Dolls has to be the best band name ever.
steampunk isn't a defined sound...it's a defined culture. it's not what you do, it's who you choose to be...WHAT YOU ARE. 12 years ago, and I still love this song
👍
The song I start my working day with. Gives me the power I need to have a great day!
Powerful voice, and wonderful song! I envision an epic airship battle to this.
"A fire fight to light the sky!"
This is actually pretty good. The things you find following one link after another. Glad I did.
@EtherPilot I love the "vise versa." vise is obviously more steam punk than vice. Very neat!
heard this one a while ago, was looking for it everywhere after forgetting the name. Now by chance I read the word "impartial" in a victorian setting novel and it clicked. oh my, I am so incredibly happy right now! one of the nicest steampunk music. (especially when I was starting getting into it)

the music is for your mind and mood
the visual just for film .......
we are there with you
I too see the airships
what ,what, old boy
Love this! Most beautiful Steampunk song I've heard yet!
I don't know why, but for some reason I could imagine a large armada of airships going up against each other whenever I hear this song. Man, what I wouldn't give to be on this ship, with this captain.
A beautiful song for a rough battle, its great.
Guys, there is a new "Steampunk" game out called Ironcast. This song is pretty much every survival mission in the game up until the boss fight. Yeah. That fucking Gargantuar, That fucking spider with guns. I hate it.
the first part is literally my in game prayer for my larp character... recited before a battle and usually followed by a charge so... inspiring
Hah, that's awesome. Glimmars steampunk is a awesome texturepack, the use of gifs are amazing.

Wow this atualy gave me goose bumps its my first time hearing it, so powerfull

Oh god, you've gotten me thinking about the clockwork robots from doctor who... Great song!
Just found this. Amazing. And now I need to build a campaign around this.
This is actually quite lovely, musically speaking. It is drawing back to the great composers of the past that made sonatas and aria's on war. It is just lovely.

Excellent, truly fantastic!
this song will soon be featured in a new up and coming cartoon currently being produced!
cool!
What's the name of the cartoon?
Has it been made yet, 5 years later?
@@KaylaKasel I'm wondering the same thing
What about six years later?
I have been into it for like a year know and ikeep going through phases and i am getting back into it

Your music is absolutely beautiful! I want more!
LOUISE STOWELL Thank you! You may stream our full catalog on bandcamp. theclockworkdolls.bandcamp.com
This is just... wow.
You really want this to happen ?
BE the Captain.
This reminds me somewhat of the classic doctor who story Enlightenment and Captain Rack on her amazing pirate ship.
Slow zoom on her face, and fade to black.
this moved me to tears ..amazing ..
Reminds me a LOT of old Inkubus/Sukubus songs... and a little bit of Joni Mitchell. I love the sheer diversity in the steampunk genre.
Had to wait for the goosebumps to settle before I could comment. Nicely done.
Not at all! They're still performing and in the studio. They just changed their line-up a bit. The composer/head honcho, Allison Curval, has promised that new albums will be forthcoming in the near future.
same here, Glimmar's Steampunk Texture Pack got me into steampunk
just discovered this a few days ago and I'm completely obsessed with this song, can't stop listening to it
Amazing. Wanderlust kicks in and I nearly shed a tear :) Thanks alot. Wouldn't know the band if not for you

That's the beauty of Steampunk in general, my friend.
How can people dislike this?!? It's so amazing...
Ok, but I think they deserve money for this masterpiece.
Excellent.Just Excellent.
I can't see the dislike button should think so this song is awesome just found out about this type of music :D
This is amazing with Rainy Mood.
You can download the whole album at bandcamp.com for free! Just type in Dramatis Personae or The clockwork Dolls. They have another album set in WWII.

@widugeist I like your definition. HONOUR is lacking in our society. Bring it back!
I listen to this and i imagine being on the front of a grand airship heading deep into the clouds, a large battle raging as my pirate crew go to join our bretheren in a last ditch effort to beat the Spanish in battle.
Love this one!⚙⚒..
I thought steampunk looked great, so I decided to listen to some music. Thank god that I did! It's awesome!
Just one word: Epic
I love to listen to this album when I am working on my book. Someone said elsewehre that this song makes them a thousand times more productive. I have to agree! Thank you for this awesome album.
To quote Moana "What can I sayyyyy except you're welcooooome"

This is powerful.
this is the only song of theres i have heard and i think it is bloody awsome
To All, The SteamPunk Symposium is in Cincinnati the last weekend of April. The location is the Atrium Hotel. Join us if you dare.
She makes references to being a pirate, but the music makes me think of a cap'n in a grand airship navy
I'm only just getting into Steampunk. Believe it or not, what got me into it was Glimmar's Steampunk Texture Pack for Minecraft. Check it out if you like Steampunk and play Minecraft.
I listen to this song whilst playing birds of steel. me in one p51 against 40 109 g10s. I win every time thanks to this music.
As have I, and I could not agree more!
So awesome. I use this song for grand scale epic battles in D&D
@loveismydestruction alot of people consider it music inspired by the fictional neovictorianist movement of steampunk mainly airships and airship pirates, victorian high-tech engineering. like, bionic parts made out of clockwork. that kind of thing. know what steampunk is you'll know what the music is.
That all seems like it could be an excellent short film. Get cracking xD
LOVE when that happens!

Even my birds love this. I guess that makes them epic steampunk birds. :D
you guys are too awesome!
always, I imagine a whole story for every song I hear or write
so beautiful i nearly cried
Could anyone please define steampunk music for me? I am a music theory student and this really interests me but I can't find an adequate definition for it. Thank you!
