My video about going above and beyond to study game shows to win: • How To Break Game Show...
Press Your Luck is one of my favorite game shows, so I thought it'd be fun to go over the history of the show. Various incarnations have aired over the last 45+ years, from Second Chance to Whammy to the Press Your Luck on ABC today.

ABC might air a special episode of Press Your Luck with Elizabeth Banks featuring Paul Michael Larson Jr., the son of the late Michael Larson, taking on his late dad's former opponents Ed and Janie.

Another fun fact about abcs bonus round, the chance of whammying increases significantly the further you go in the bonus round. its about 1 in 6 in round 1 by the big bucks bonanza its about 1 in 4. So bigger risks bigger rewards.

It was very unfortunate for someone who lived in Ottawa, Ontario, that the then CBS affiliate in Rochester (or as Jim Rome called it Crap-chester) NY, WHEC-TV decided to pre-empt PYL. Instead, the station decided to air syndicated game shows like 'Love Connection'. The only way I ever got to see PYL was when I visited my grandparents in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario where the CBS affiliate the cable company aired the show. When GSN aired episodes, as embarrassing as this sounds, I treated it like a first-run episode.
Another prominent celebrity (from a Canadian perspective) who appeared as a contestant on PYL in the 1980's was 'Body Break' host Hal Johnson.

(I’m still waiting for that ABC Press Your Luck episode too because it would’ve aired on my bday while i was in Disneyland. I’d watched it on DVR like I did for Big Brother because it had a double-evict that night too)

There are a couple of other contestants who would end up being celebrities of sorts in later years. For instance, Mike Horton, who unfortunately didn't win his game, would later be Gemini on the popular 90s show "American Gladiators".
There was also Ralph Strangis. He won $7,431 during his appearance. He would end up becoming the play-by-play announcer for the Minnesota North Stars of the National Hockey League in 1990. He continued doing games for them when they became the Dallas Stars in 1993, and would remain in his position until 2015.

I've loved all the versions of PYL, but I do have one criticism: the bonus round is too long for me. Having a bonus round take as long as the main game makes the game a little predictable due to having to either stretch to fill the one hour or if a contestant is just going into round 5 and there is only three minutes left, you know he is stopping. My idea would be to do something like what the original did for the final day of one of it's at-home contests. At the end of the week, the champion picked one card and faced an all cash-board. What he landed on was multiplied by the number of spins earned in the final round. Have the winner face the board and multiply the cash by the number of spins they earned during the entire game. Oh, and have returning champions too.

Impressive documentary I would say. But, there are a few nitpicks that I have:
    1) Contrary to popular belief, the producers did not change the patterns immediately after the Michael Larson episode, rather 4 months after. In between that, they would try with two "emergency patterns", which were 5 patterns that were different. It wasn't until September 17th that the newest patterns would debut(32 to be exact)
    2) You did bring up about playing "against the house" and the comparison with Jeopardy. But similar with Jeopardy!, there was a all-lose rule. Should any contestant playing against the house Whammy out, then no one would return the very next day(The closest that rule came into effect was a college episode from late 1984/early 1985, where the contestant playing against the house had 3 whammies and won just $500).
    3) The $0 win did happen three times on the Peter Tomarken run, once before the Larson episode and twice after(There were even two cases where a player did not take a 2nd round spin and still won the game outright).
    4) And lastly, co-champions. It happened twice with three players(Chris/Dom/Diane from 1984 and Dorothy/Wayne/Joe from 1986), but there also did exist a two-way tie with $0(Warren and Andrea), back in 1983, in one of the first 50 episodes(Cannot remember what episode, but I believe it was the 17th episode).

      @myprizegarage  Год назад

Yea someone brought up #4, I don’t really have an excuse for missing that one, but someone else already brought it up so I corrected myself in the description.
As for your point about Larson, I just said they did work on the patterns after Larson’s game. Didn’t mean to imply that they went straight to 32 patterns immediately after his taping day

Correction: The Whammy already made it's game show debut in odd 60s show "Beat the Odds"....granted he was a ghost named Sammy the Whammy.
Also, Shoot for the Stars did not replace Name That Tune. It replaced Stumpers. Name that Tune and Shoot for the Stars both debuted the same month.

The Elizabeth Banks version of "Press Your Luck," they have the Prize-a-Palooza square in the bonus round. They have The Big 40 square commemorating the 40th anniversary of "Press Your Luck." Why not bring back the Big Bank square in the Banks version to make it more interesting?

The Big Bank was one of the reason the Todd Newton version of the show failed. If you didn't answer the question correctly, you essentially lose a spin.

When I heard ABC was rebooting PYL with Elizabeth Banks as the host, I was apprehensive about her as the host. Not that I dislike her, I just never thought of an actress like her, a game show host. But, boy, was I wrong, she won me over super fast. She is very respectful & encouraging to all the contestants & very rarely makes a wisecrack.
