Just bought a 2014 focus se a couple days ago, only had 53000miles and looks almost new! After less than 20 miles out the dealership it developed a rattle in the back right (possibly shock) and I noticed the shudder in the transmission. Ford have it back today to look into the rattle, and I had no expectations given it was bought as-is, but your videos are giving me some peace of mind so thank you. If the trans does go belly up I’ll be using your videos thoroughly!

Thank you for the description of the fork engagement - it describes my issues. Also interesting to hear the good word about the engine - I've noticed mine shows no sign of age and it has a bunch of miles on it. If the OP is reading - I had P285E codes a year ago and got 12,000 miles out of a fix whereby I sprayed carb cleaner in the TCM holes into the transmission housing and cleaned the actuators under the external covers. Today the problem came back. Does this "fix" make any sense? I have had the shudder for about 50K miles.

      @BigBensCarsAndCycles  Год назад

Hey..yeah I've heard of people pulling the actuators out and spraying cleaner on the forks with the transmission in the vehicle. I think it would be a good temp fix. If the forks barely have resistance, I bet it would last a good while.

Good explanation. I've got a 2012 Focus that has had the transmission controller module replaced in December 2020 when I suddenly started getting shuddering with a transmission alert error showing up. They had to tow it to the Ford Dealer to have the repair done. Not a single issue since replacement. The 2.0Litre engine on the standard Focus Trend is incredible for what it is. Definitely agree that they are solid engines. Just a real shame about the transmission issues.

I only get shudder on hot days after longer drives. I"ve found pausing afrer taking foot off brake at lights, and then giving it plenty of gas on takeoff solves it. Shudders starting from stop or a very low speeds. It has been a minor nuisance.
Past 4 months have gone out in morning on 3 occasions and won't turn over.
Ten to twenty minutes battery recharged to 85%+ using small 15 amp Vector unit every time.
Dash has in past briefly displayed alarming "Transmission error, service immediately" (or something very similar). This message does go away without response, unlike CEL, lamp, tire pressure or washer fluid messages so I have dismissed it, I hope not foolishly, as part of a reset with recharging battery. Note this message did not appear this morning after incompletely reconditioning battery overnight (need to use vehicle to go to work, approximately 16 hours using same Vector unit.
I intend to replace battery tomorrow as that is simplest action with any likelihood of addressing issue.
I see I will need to reset the battery sensor afterwards.
I have also stumbled upon the procedure for resetting the transmission control module.
Would resetting either of these have a negative effect prior to replacing battery? Might they address current issues?

    • @BigBensCarsAndCycles
      @BigBensCarsAndCycles  9 месяцев назад

Hi, you're welcome. Happy to help. A failing battery can certainly cause a tcm to malfunction. Resetting anything beforehand won't hurt. I would replace the battery and reevaluate if the issue is still present. If so you'll need further diagnosis. See what code the transmission is setting. A 2018 focus shouldn't have a tcm issue. You would likely end up needing actuators or possibly forks

Hello Ben! I must say, your channel is fantastic, and this video is packed with valuable information. I'm currently dealing with a 2011 Fiesta that's throwing error codes P0805 and P2872. Starting the car takes a bit of effort, usually on the third try, and I have to turn the key slowly. Strangely, it won't shift into 3rd gear. I've already replaced both actuators, and the car performs well otherwise. Interestingly, I also possess the special tool to manipulate the socket hole where the actuators are located, and they seem to turn smoothly without any hesitation. They return to their original position without any issues. Any help would be gladly appreciated

Hi, I appreciate you watching and I'm glad the videos are helping! I'm thinking you have a TCM issue. Did you get a letter in the mail about extended coverage through 2025? It may be free for you. You can let Ford diagnose it and fix it for free. If you call to ask, the program is called 14m02 and must show up under your vin. Other possibilities would be a bad ground for the tcm, or a bad new actuator.

My daughter has her 2014 Focus at the Ford dealer for the 6th time. (Covington KY) Date 9/25/2023. Transmission is making a terrible noise, but still drives. Cost to repair $7300!! No typo. Last repair was $2000 not covered by warranty. Car is in beautiful shape, new tires and brakes 150,000 miles. Dealer tells her he will give her $200 on trade in. I recommend sourcing a low mileage used transmission and putting a new clutch, forks, slave cylinder and tcm on it. That'll save you thousands. Or reuse tcm If it's already been replaced by Ford. I have a 2017 Focus, and the trans seems to work well, it only has 53,000 miles on it. After driving it a while sometimes it seems to slip a little, especially when turning. Could it be low on fluid from the factory? Thanks for your great video.

Hi, low fluid level won't cause any noticeable concerns with clutch slippage. If theres no codes, you can try a manual adaptive learn. That's taken care of a cold 1-2 slip on mine. I've got a video for that. Note: 2017 and 18's are really bad about the clutch actuator motors failing, so thats another thing you can replace. OEM ones only

I have a 2017 Focus that lately ive noticed when i accelerate out of a complete stop and the automatic transmission shifts into first gear it makes a gurgling sound and struggles a bit before fully shifting. It does not do that in any of the higher gears or when I am driving at highway speeds.
The Focus has just over 77K miles on it.
I dont have a lead foot when driving and tend to accelerate/brake accordingly as to try and get the most out of my Focus.

I replaced the 3 sensors within 3 months and 5-6k miles. then i got a code again for one of the turbine sensors and found new sensor failed, replaced again and then a few weeks later i got error for the other turbine sensor, again it failed and replaced and car is currently working. The same is true of manual sport mode, of course. your rev cycling could be a failing clutch actuator (the 2 motors on the transmission) so you can replace both of those, and if that doesn't fix it, do a clutch and fork replacement. But first, if you see fluid leaking from the bell housing, that's more than likely causing the clutch slippage
The tire hop from a stop may be from bald tires. Not sure, I'd have to see

I’ve tried to research symptoms for a 2014 Focus clutch, and from what I can gather hard shuttering is the main one for a clutch. I was looking through the comments and didn’t see any definitive answer specifically towards a clutch problem. I know you’re probably tired of seeing the same question but here I am asking lol.
Generally for clutch problems is the main symptom hard shuttering, and if it’s starting to go then it’s light shuttering?

I bought a 2014 Ford Focus Se about a year ago with seeming no issues. Sometimes the shifting was a little sluggish, but that was it. Recently I started to notice shuttering, mainly going from 1st to 2nd gear and then a few days later, I couldn't go in reverse, scanned it and had Code: P090C-00 Clutch Actuator B. After watching one of your videos, I was able to change both actuators myself, when I did it, I took that special tool and moved it back and forth with a little wd-40 to clear it from any dust or gunk, to my surprise they both move freely with no resistance after I was done, the car drove great and shifted better than ever for 2 weeks, then one day the shuttering came back and I lost reverse again, I read somewhere that after you replace the clutch actuators, a Ford Technician has to reset it with special tools, is that true? I'm trying to do everything myself if possible, and would be greatly appreciated. You're videos have been a blessing for me, thank you.

I have a 2014 Ford Focus with 112k miles on it. I recently bought it, and when we test drove it, it drove perfectly fine. However, about a week later, it started to jerk weirdly in the third gear. The RPM would go super high, and it wouldn't let me move. It slowly got worse, and I started experiencing stalls at red lights for a couple of seconds as it wouldn't let me shift. After my dad test drove it, he drove it hard, and the transmission overheated, causing the check engine light to come on. We called a mechanic, and he suggested replacing the actuators since the car had some old, cheap ones in it. However, that didn't fix the issue.
The day after getting the actuators replaced, I drove it to work, and the transmission overheated again, rendering it undrivable. I couldn't even turn the car on anymore. We had it towed to the Ford dealership, and they replaced the TCM as it's a recall on the car, and it was free. Unfortunately, this also didn't fix the problem. The dealership suggests fixing the clutch next, so now we are looking around for the cheapest place to get that fixed since the dealership offered to fix it at $3,800, which is WAY too much. Anyways, wish us luck; hopefully, fixing the clutch will officially resolve the issue.

After driving my 2014 Focus for 8 years, my engine light suddenly came on and the won't start. The mechanic told me both actuators had to be replaced, as well as the modulator costing about $2.5K. The Ford Dealer said it would take them months to get the parts, but this guy said he could get them wholesale if I paid half up front. This happened very suddenly one morning. Up till then I had no warning of any serious problem. Over the years the transmission went out just a few times while driving, and I had to pull over. But, I was always able to get it back to normal after pausing a few minutes and restarting the vehicle. I'm really torn between getting it fixed and investing in a new car. I've come to like my little black hatchback. Some people say it's not worth it, and that it will happen again even after being fixed. I have to make a decision fast. Any advice? Wait, STOP!!! it's likely just the TCM failure - and its FREE at the dealership until 2025! Regardless of miles. You won't have to pay a dime. Assuming by modulator, they meant module
I saw that video about the transmission reset, I believe thats for different issues which cause a transmission limp (such as overheating clutch) and won't help you.

Hello! I have a 2012 Ford Focus. I don’t know much about cars so excuse my wording lol.
We too received the recall letter and sent it in and was told it wasn’t the TCM that it was the clutch?
Ever since the car has a hard time going after ever stop light. You can say it accelerates and then comes back down and most times just looses power until I put it down to L and back up to Drive. I’ve been told it’s the clutch, others that it’s the “cylinders” again I don’t know much about cars so it is hard for me to explain what is going on but refuse for it to just sit there now.

Let me add that they did nothing to the car since it didn’t “qualify” so we just paid to get it checked 😬

Can you confirm that there is no Warranty for the 2018 Focus. I understand this is a Design problem, if I replace the clutch will this happen again and again. Other comments seem to suggest that the failure will keep reoccurring.
    Thanks Again Denton Aylor

I bought this focus 2012 se had 95000 miles on it loved it sent it to California for my daughter and last Friday the 1st of September the transmission light came on. Going to ford today they said if it’s the TCM it’s a free job I have a carmax warranty thru end of October if ford wants a lot of money to fix. Idk what carmax would do we’ve bought from them before with no issues. I’m sure they have a auto service area that would cover her fix during the 90 day warranty or what do I do?’i haven’t even made the first car payment yet and it took a dump on my kiddo who’s in college there I’m in Washington I have my fingers crossed that Ford will be honest with me and just re program and fix the issue at no charge. I’m looking for a happy outcome I’ll know this afternoon and I’ll be back to post an update

16 Focus SE 2.0 L I’ve found a used 5 speed manual transmission for $500 . It’s got 132 K miles . The 6 speed used also is $1700 and it’s for performance trim car the ST ? I can have the shop swap it out get the automatic transmission replaced? Is just spinning the gears not able to engage.. very bad now.

    • @BigBensCarsAndCycles

the 2.0 Fusion ecoboost engine may share the same bolt pattern for the bell housing as the focus ST. You may need to do a lot of custom work to get a manual transmission working in a Fusion. I don't believe I've seen a factory manual transmission fusion, so you'll have to do a lot of research to get the swap to work and get Forscan.

@@BigBensCarsAndCycles I don't have one, I just recall something about Ford's issues with the DCT's and the lawsuits that resulted in the internal conversations at ford between engineers, legal and management.
Right now I'm looking for focus or fiesta to use as a reliable fun semi daily driver. Normally I just buy sticks but I've been curious about those DCT's, so I'm trying to figure out if those were ever resolved the issues with them

@linusa2996 No they have not been fully resolved yet. If you buy a used dct focus, I'm sure the transmission will be shuddering. If you get a manual trans focus, that's a bulletproof reliable car with only a few minor easy to fix issues

With a new clutch, forks and slave cylinder you should be set for a long time with only (maybe) occasional minor issues that are cheap. If the tcm has already been replaced that would be a bonus

The car has service records but a lot of it says unknown. From what I can see the electrical work has been done as well as Fuel system which I assume was from the recalls for the fuel lines? Hello Ben, I went through almost 2 years of hell with my 13 Fiesta DPS6. So went I brought the car 2 years ago with 44k miles, the last owner decided to put a rusty junkyard unit with 170k miles into the car. After the 2 years of me driving it, the rust started clogging up actuator B and TCM had p090c which TCM was going bad.
I had the Ford dealer just 1 month ago, replace clutch, clutch acutators, tcm, throw out bearing, seal, and so on. A trans full overall. I tested my car in 20 miles of rush hour traffic. It did not had 1 transmission problem.
I believe that the clutch is fully engage at 5mph(not riding the clutch, in 5 speed manual language)

What a shame they put a high mileage trans into a low mileage car! And that's a good idea to keep a little speed. Taking off from a stop is when more clutch wear would logically occur!
