Exactly the reason why i stayed ABA and went turbo instead of the infamous VR swap "everyone" kept tellingme to do. Lol

Much appreciated. I did this job last week and at some point slipped my timing. Haven't touched it because i didn't want to rip everything apart and do guess work on the timing lol. I'll attack it today now thank you
Yeh - They are great. I had a 84 Jetta, with the 1.8 engine and a close ratio trans. Gosh it was fast and revved high. I had 10 years of Diesels by then and always figured a diesel trans would really top out the speed. I had 5 Mk1 and Mk2 chassis for parts. They were easy to work on! Thank you! Cheers
Nice... I haven't seen one of those oil pan guards in quite a while! At 4:00 the crank gear is sitting slightly off of TDC... this can be due to a worn key at the back of the gear (if the TDC at the flywheel was in the correct place). New subscriber, great channel!

I used to work with a guy tuning VW's. We had a couple rally cars an MKII Jetta and GTI. We built a fully caged NB with an HPA 3.1 12 valve VR6 with a quaife 6 speed O2A etc. etc..... It was the drag/track car. But, what always drove people nuts were the mail trucks. Grumman used to build all aluminum mail trucks using VW diesel engines with autos. It was basically an MKI platform. One of them was rhino lined inside and had the full US mail paint job outside. We had a 2.0 16V Motronic engine with 100 shot of NOS and an O2A transmission. It had a 4 wheel disc brake conversion with TSW wheels. It ran mid 14's in the 1/4 mile (which is impressive because it's like a giant brick) until the fuel pump failed, it leaned out and the NOS blew the head. So we found an old S1 Scirocco that had a legit Callaway turbo kit on a 1.8 8v. We ripped it out, upgraded a few things (turbo) and we almost had it all set in the mail truck when I quit working with him. Never got to see that one run. We had Corrados, Passats, MKIII, MKIV, Audi's....... Anyway, I love the old vdubs. I miss my 89 GTI 16v and my 91 GLI 16v very much. There is nothing quite like an MKII or even an MKI. I love the feel of driving them. The 2.0 crossflow aba in the Rabbit is good, but the VR6 is phenomenal...... wink wink. Nice to see you keeping that car alive.

Great video Faye! Nice work. I have a 1.8L i swapped into my Vanagon Camper that was originally a 1.6 diesel. I noticed a few drops of coolant on the driveway and found that it was from the weep hole in the water pump. I went to Napa and they had one in stock and it was around $20! Cheap enough to make me nervous.....I asked if they had one that cost more and maybe has a metal impeller.....nope. This is just a summer toy vehicle for me, so I'm sure the pump will last long enough for my use, but I still think about it.
You guys do a great job Thomas and faith is all I watch you're very thorough I put mine on but it's kind of loose any ideas how to adjust tension more

Were you able to reuse the water pump studs/bolts or used new ones? The Bentley manual says those must be replaced but they're hard to find. Thanks

There's no room for it, unfortunately. I don't have AC, but to be fair, I haven't had a car with AC since 2007, so I'm good.
You have timing covers on in a mk1? I was under the impression that didn't work
When I turn my crank the timing belt doesn’t turn for me to line the OT mark. Is this because im missing teeth on the belt and need to replace it? How to I turn it now to get it lined up?
Also what do I turn to get the distributor rotor to line up with the notch?
When I turn the crank the only belts that move are the accessory belts

Hi Faye, should the water pump and tensioner be replaced every time? I have low mileage ABA on my 95 Cabrio which is a summer car only. I did the timing belt originally when it needed it at 100k kms, along with the tensioner pulley but not the waterpump, cam seal or the tensioner thing (which I didn't even know was something that should be maybe replaced). It only has 120 kms on it now - should I do it just as preventative maintenance?
to remove the camshaft did you use the same method as too tighen it back down?
I remember back in 2015 I was replacing the timming belt of my 1980 Dodge Omni wich use the 1.7lt EA827 VW engine(from factory) and place the camshaft timing 180 degrees away from the timming point and so everytime the spark plug fire it was in intake stroke soo a huge af flame came from the carb XD still today I dont know how I didnt vent or brake a valve XD

What tool are you using to remove the hose clamp at 9:17 ?
Any idea why the water pump kit contained the complete housing? I don’t recall that being a failure point in my VW’s of that generation.
Great question! ....I have no freaking clue, but I do know that on my old engine, the previous owner had used mostly water for coolant, so the housing (and my engine) had a ton of corrosion and sediment and build up. I was able to flush the block when the engine was out, and I was grateful to have a whole new water pump housing then.
OH, and to add to that, the housing isn't failure prone, but the O-Ring between housing and block does start to leak over time, so I usually try to replace all together. Not everyone wants to go that route due to extra $$ labor though!
Having always kept up with the cooling system maintenance corrosion was never a problem, as for the O-ring failure, my VW’s must have lead a charmed life. Thanks for answering
Makes sense. Housing corrosion will cause o ring leakage and very hard to clean corrosion off of that type of metal surface.

I have a 98 mk3 jetta with a 2.0l. And my car cranks but backfires out the exhaust. Thinking the timing is off.
And I'm confused and have no idea how to make sure my timing is right or how to do it. Please helpp somebody :(
Not being a VW connoisseur, what does ABA acronym stand for in regards to this engine?
Most people around here call it the 2 litre crossflow or 2pointslow. ABA is just the engine code. It is a great conversion for MKI and MKII's it was just a little anemic in the MKIII and especially the MKIV.
Apparently late to the party, looking to do this on my 95 2.0 aba but it says your contech kit doesn't fit mine ☹️, how can I be certain I'm getting all that I need?
Hey there! Mine is a '96 8V. I not sure why it wouldn't, but a safe bet is to call your local parts store and verify the part # with them if they carry CRP products, which most do :)

Would you be able to do a water pump on a Ford Taurus 2008? Those generally require the engine and transmission to be taken out together just to get the timing cover off.
They require a timing chain replacement. They job is a 14 hour job and it costs at least $1500. I would just trade it in for a Toyota.
