I own a CP70, my parents bought it for me around 1980. Always loved this piano, haven't played it for years but, I still have it & it's in pristine condition. 🎹
I bought a CP70b ( balanced outputs) when they were new around 1975. I gigged with it for 5 years, carrying it around with just 2 of us. We were strong in those days. Since then it has sat, packed into its cases, in my house until last week . Thats 40 years. I finally set it up, plugged it into my PA system and guess what? Its still in tune. And I'd forgotten how amazing it sounds. Massive sound. I was going to sell it. Not so sure now unless I get serious money for it. Ive been a pro pianoman all my life and played hundreds of electric pianos but this makes them feel like dead, plastic toys. Its so much more responsive allowing expression thats almost impossible on a digital one.
Awesome video man. Bought a mint cp70 a year ago for my apartment after trying out every other digital piano in stores. You can’t beat the real feel of real strings. It was also the only real piano I could get into the 3rd floor apartment. I actually play it mostly acoustically without plugging it in and with the cover flipped open. It sounds beautiful, also with low volume so I can play in the apt with neighbors no problem. I had to learn to tune it myself though (using software) as it goes out of tune easily. Hope I can keep it forever. Great video again thanks for sharing.
I had a chance to get one of these at a great mark down because the original owner had hired me for a recording session and failed to pay me anything for it. And then, I was the dope let it go because I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to maintain it. Now, if I want one again, I think of those numbers you quoted. Good thing I am satisfied enough with the emulations on my digital synthesizers.
The CP70 was also used by Prince from 1980 to 1985, both on record and on stage. It's on display (purple of course) in Paisley Park now. I sold mine in 2008 but missed it so much I bought another in 2015 (got it for 650 euro, but the tolex was removed and it's painted white - I like it even more). I'll never sell this one. So, another Belgian owner right here. 😎
The first time I recognized the sound of a cp70 was Tim playing with Keane.I hadn't known it was a CP70/80 in those songs you spoke about . Such a distinctive sound. I love it. Does the fact that the strings are horizontal make its action more like an acoustic grand piano than say, an upright piano?
man u played Firth of fifth there... it would be awesome to see this live by tony maybe in 78. Tony was originally a pianist and hated eletric piano sounds. he used them in a different way and avoided playing pieces that required real pianos live such as... Firth of fifth. He managed to come up with a unique sound with the RMI through 75-77 and Hohner clavinet 71-73 but when he first saw the cp80 it was love at first sight, man and he made that thing sound really like a piano in the lyceum ballrooms 1980 playing ripples from a trick of the tail (i wonder how, because this thing has such a eletric sound like as seen in that's all)... Always had a dream of owning one because i have a genesis cover band! the little that i know is if you put some chorus in the fx loop it sounds awesome (and of course try it with a roland jazz chorus: it is mindblowing). I am a pianist too and deep inside i know that the playing dynamics should make a huge difference in the tone: whether it's piano rather eletric. the samples are not quite the original sound, even the ones made by Yamaha and nord
You have the right idea with tasteful signal processing at the output stage of the CP70. Naked into a guitar amp, it needs to be played softly. Pushed hard, it can sound downright strident to the point of ugliness. One of my best ever gigs (1983) was on a CP70b and i wished that I had more signal processors back then.
same for me in Colombia, i ended up buying one from the states and got it shipped straight to my house in Bogotá, Colombia haha. it wasn't that hard, but surely expensive, the piano itself was around 700 dollars, but shipping and taxes were dam expensive, i ended up spending around 2000 dollars, anyways, still being not that expensive
@@TomFrantzis in case you want to use your CP-70 as midi controller then consider to install a QRS Pnoscan system, wich is a strip that goes underneath the keys, capture the pulsations of them and convert it into midi signals, i have read about it and it sounds promising.
@@TSTBand Well yeah, the Forte Music MIDI Mod is something like that. But it has a Midi output that is actually a stereo jack port, not a DIN 5 MIDI port. So I'm still trying to figure out how to make it work!
I own a CP-70 that we are about to sell, it was not used a lot, and the half that has the strings, is in an Anvil case, with large wheels, both parts have been in storage here in Southern California for about 20 years, it’s in great condition… wanna make me an offer? I just now set it up, and have new photos of it, I’m a lifelong musician myself (mostly on bass), let me know, we recently posted it for sale - Chris :-)
Iconic cp70 performance
Prince... Purple Rain ... The Beautiful Ones

Hi .. I'm interested in the piano
Greetings
I'm a Belgian owner of a CP70B. You gave real justice to this piano. Thank you.

@@tbip2001 yes. Sorry
Love that sound. Thanks for the video.
ohh my i love it
I really like this video, it deserves a lot more views. Thank you for posting !! The CP-70 is iconic

I dream with this piano every night. You’re so lucky to have one

Thank you for the great video and good information!
What do you think about ABBA's white YAMAHA CP80B used by Benny Andersson on 1979/80 tours? 😍
The definitive keyboard sound of Genesis. Casio did a nice job replicating it in CT-S1 model. Basically when I play it, I pretend to be Tony Banks lol

and what an honor to learn how to play the piano in this wonderful instrument
thank you
I have one. Mine belonged to the band Hot Chocolate. I have the Hot Chocolate road cases in my garage which I doubt I'll ever use again.
Wow...your videos have this unique vibe...cannot describe
I think I better SUBscribe=)
Wow... ur version of misty makes me think im listening to a Japanese 70's artist playing the CP70/80 in Tokyo...

what is the difference between cp-70 and cp70b?
This is such a good video, ive been trying to get my hands on a cp-70 over here in aus but no luck yet

I have a CP-70m and it's awesome, no sample or emulation can compare to the real thing. Great video by the way!
I bet it does! I've got a B myself but it's equiped with a Forte Music Midi mod. No idea how to make it work because it's midi over Jack.

Wanneer mag ik eens langskomen voor een all-day-long pianosessie?
Funny thing, the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 played one on stage.
Do you still have the CP?
The video is 1 week old, so yeah...
how much do you buy it?
I paid mine 3000 euro. Which is expensive, but the price they go by here in Belgium. If you find one online that is!
you forgot abba in their live tournee 1977,1979! 😢😂
I have one.
never let my baby go!
Firth of Fifth!!
me lo regalas???

Imagine doing flashbacks and not including Billy Joel who threw one off a stage one time
Can you find footage of that?
Look up Billy’s red rage and watch it
"Really hard to come by"??? "Years of scouring the internet"??? So dramatic. What internet were you using? These things are all over ebay!
Keep in mind, I'm from Belgium.
@@TomFrantzis Oh...so you were trying to buy one locally?
@@funkyjones Buying one oversees with transport and import taxes in mind, does not seem like a great idea.
@@TomFrantzis Okay....makes sense.
