This interview was great. Especially the laid back fun. It's actually hard to ask for questions but these were good and the rapport natural. Really inspiring me for my podcast.
You can't control what you deem as important, but you can control where you direct your attention and thereby influence your priorities and the things that really matter to you.
I taught Carina on Foundation - I distinctly remember her standing in a small hand-drawn circle in the middle of the studio, for several hours, dressed as an elephant.
Fascinating interview with a fascinating man. However, The Beatles produced some of the greatest music in 9 years and Rolling Stones have been around 150million years.
I wonder if he’s studied Edward Bernaise? Being at Oglvy, I’d expect it to be compulsory reading like it was for my Father. My father was a MadMan, based in Chicago back in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s before starting his own very successful marketing and communications business. It was a very fascinating life growing up around some of the most famous and interesting people in the World. This gentleman reminds me of my father’s creative director.
One of those people who I have enjoyed working with, not working for, because the methodology is basically "see what works" and "park by feel" abandonment of reason. As he points out, it's the dilemma of inexperience, and because the shift from Apprenticeship to Career is inevitable, in reaction to the availability of qualified persons easily outsourced, eventually the pendulum swings back and the tenacious and curious self-teaching person "falls into place". Although all the lottery winners probably say it was the wisdom of their own efforts?
I've probably consumed close 1,000 hours of Rory Sutherland content including his book (which I've read and listened to several times). This is the first time I have ever felt genuine opposition to anything he has said which was "Stones over Beatles" (there's literally no way that is that man's actual preference) and that "Prawns wouldn't improve w/ cheese" 😆😅

steve cummings that is so weird you say that! It's not the first time I've been told that and THANK YOU BECAUSE I LOVE HER. so glad you liked the interview ☺️
Obviously I'm going to employ a person because I need them to perform a specific task, it's not just a fun game where they get to do whatever they want.
Not all jobs have entirely static roles to be filled though. I could see how in the advertising industry, different clients with different projects means less of a need for hyper specific and rigid job titles. A great employee with a specific set of skills who is adaptable to different scenarios could be hired and be assigned to projects as and when needed.
Correlation between idleness and ingenuity... Fabulous
The mistake is hiring to fill a role rather than hiring a person and then creating the role around them....Love it!
Yes, in some places this works. In most places, not a chance.
