  • While many fans were excited to see Banjo included in Smash Ultimate, there has been some debate over whether or not he's a strong addition to the roster. We'll start by looking at Banjo's initial release, where he was met with mixed reviews and then we will show how the mod HDR, made Banjo's animations more expressive, and changed his combo flows for the better!

I don't think they want to cut characters anymore because the last time they did, it caused pretty heavy complaints from fans that, first the cuts from Melee to Brawl, which they redeemed with Smash 4, but this in turn couldn't include Ice Climbers because of the 3DS and both versions also had different stages, which all made people so unhappy, that they specifically created Smash Ultimate as the "Ultimate Smash", basically as the title says, and with something like that you cannot downgrade anymore.
However then they went so wild with 3rd Party titles that I am a little worried about the next installment...Nintendo certainly has the power and money to negotiate the return of all of them, but their concurrents know about this too and might either charge more (in which case Nintendo might withdraw because greed) or just say "no" to actually hurt their competitor.
Idk, I didn't even want any of these besides Banjo and Sonic, and would have preferred if Nintendo had only selected characters from the Banjo, Conker, Sonic and Rayman/Rabbids (which aren't even in the game) franchises, due to their heavy association with the Marioverse, to which the largest number of Smash characters belong.

Honestly, the saddest part about Banjo is that his problems as a character aren’t a core part of his design like Little Mac or Ganondorf. All he needed was a few well placed buffs and he could’ve been a much better character. But, as of now, most of his moves just don’t feel like they do much. Not to mention Banjo has the second highest aerial landing lag in the game. Only Sephiroth’s is higher. What were they thinking?

I love the idea of changing his neutral air into Pack Whack.
Coming from someone who mains K. Rool and doesn't care too much about tiers, my main disappointment with Banjo in Smash isn't even that he's bad but that he's just so unsatisfying to play as IMO. His moveset is littered with so many weak multi hits or just generally attacks with unusually low kill power for Ultimate. And his combos being so few in numbers on top of also being really specific and situational does not help.
Its also why I like the idea of normalising his down throw without the bury effect since that makes it useless at low % and inconsistent at mid to high % in Ultimate.

While I do think banjo is not good, you severely underrepresented what he CAN do. His move set is far from simple, it’s very complex actually especially since moves have multiple uses. For example, up air landing hit middle can confirm into fair or bair. Up air far hit will push opponent inward and you can combo into fair and it’s pretty safe. Banjos grabs are easily some of the better in the game, Down throw may not be consistent but it’s very good for setups against any player, and fthrow Easily pushes opponents into grenade which you can then wonderwing or fair. Nair is one of his best moves, it shield pokes, kills offstage respectively, and drag downs, is a combo finisher, it’s a really good move, people rarely fall out. Dair does suck but you can use with grenade offstage so you don’t die and spike opponent. Breegull blaster is not used to keep people away, it’s only used at a very slight distance to get nice positional combos and setups.
The damage % kills were really off too, up tilt can kill as early as 95 and on average 120. Upssmash is super weak and kills around 130-150.

Banjo is like the reverse of what happened with Min-Min where the dev team didn't feel confident in throwing a pure zoning character into the DLC so just like Min-Mim they gave him shades of a different moveset. (Snake's psuedo-brawler and trapper moveset is an example of how Banjo feels.)
The issue is that unlike Min-Min who got incredible normals that let her get people who approach off of her, Banjo got a bunch of moves that dont really *do* anything. Which I'm sure on some level they thought was "fine" because hey, they're references, but Smash have proven to me especially lately that some characters are either damned or saved by the ties to their references. Banjo is definitely damned by them because they straight up don't provide him any meaningful tools to help him in neutral or especially in damage.
I'm not *really* a fan of Banjo, but having grown up with his games, I was genuinely scared he was going to end up being lackluster because I knew how dedicated the team was going to be in cramming his kit with references and charm rather than good game design. They had already done this with Megaman who feels pretty stiff in his game design so I had a feeling Banjo was going to get hit with this as well.
Maybe he would have been better if they picked references that were geared more towards Smash's gameplay but I really don't know if they can be convinced to. We need more moves like Banjo's D-Tilt, which is both a great reference and a pretty good attack in Smash.

Honestly nah I think if you’re gonna make this many changes you should try to get more references, it’s pretty Kazooie biased though Tooie isn’t treated too bad but even still
-I do not like the bill drill removal for this reason
-Fair is okay but canonically the backpack swing works only when Kazooie isn’t in it, yes the official one is the wing whack which she can only do out of the backpack but she’s also kind of popping out of it so I think it’s fair
Rest is fine but can go further, above all else I’d wanna see grabs either be backpack if we’re willing to do backpack moves, or the wrench from nuts and bolts. I’d argue the fair should be the wrench though it’s a spinning move in NB so maybe fair? But kazooie swinging it forward also works imo. But grabs with the gravity manip stuff like it’s a main series banjo game like it or not, it should have some content imo

Banjo-Kazooie's issue is that they just... don't do enough of anything. That's something very important in smash titles, to be jack of all trades master of something; Mario has lots of combos, Joker has Arsene, Diddy has banana peel, Wolf and Ness have kill power, Palutena has invincibility, Yoshi has superarmor and horizontal mobility, R.O.B has Gyro and D-Tilt, Inkling have their dash, Mii Brawler has kill confirms and Fox-like vertical movility and even Pit/Pittoo, as average as they are, can shield mid-air with down-B.
What can Banjo-Kazooie do in comparison? Nothing really. Combo? Not really, his moves have fairly high base knockback. Space? Neither. Kazooie is as much of a disjoint as Steve's pickaxe or the Kokiri sword. KO? Nope, as you said his KO is surprisingly limited. Rushdown? Not at all, his initial dash is way too slow for that playstyle, and so is his frame data and air speed. Zone you? Kinda, but for what exactly? It's not like a Samus, R.O.B, Snake or even Wolf who can zone you to condition your gameplan with strong/fast aerials; besides, turtling is not how they fight in their games. Is not as bad as Doc's lack of moveset cohesion but is just so underwhelming that there's no wonder why no one plays him.

I agree with the overall take on Banjo in Ultimate and think he looks dope in HDR!
That being said... Some of the takes on his ultimate form seemed way off to me lol
Banjo's Nair is one of his best moves. It crosses up shields giving him mix-ups on shield. It's quick as an out of shield option and hits around his body. It drags down and gives him loops and grabs out of air to air contact.
Down throw is a good throw setting up his kill setups since his kill power isn't the best.
And Down B is a really solid move.
I agree that Banjo isn't good in the game, or a low mid tier character at best, but this take on his moveset was really off to me.
Also, Banjo's recovery is great lol he is floaty, but heavy. Has three jumps, can reset his jumps with his bomb which he can grab instantly out of the air by B-reversing the move and can act out of up B even with any of his other jumps.
Banjo isn't great, but I feel like you completely under sold his strong points. Lol

That change to the side B is actually genius. Limited recovery is one of his biggest problems, but it would be impossible to make easier without buffing Wonder Wing too. Giving the aerial version a different resource and effect, and making it another iconic BK stable move, is a really satisfying way to redesign his recovery without making wonderwing too strong.

  • @cometboyu7848

Ngl, kinda feels like your downplaying banjo's down throw. At higher percents it can become a cruel as tow where you need to either mash really fast cause banjo could use his smash attacks, but he can also use his up tilt to catch the opponent if they do escape really fast. Buf if they choose to wait for an uptilt, then banjo can just use a smash attack. Either way, it's much better than you think.

  • @herewego5679
    @herewego5679 Год назад

As a banjo main I think HDR did a pretty decent job fixing some of his weaknesses, though stuff like his up smash turning into up tilt is just weird, and aerial side b was a tad but unnecessary. All banjo in ultimate needs is less endlag, and increased damage to be higher on the tier list. (Invincibility on up be start up would he nice, like joker) and maybe more than just 5 uses of side b. (If joker can get arsene 3 times in one stock with moves that kill at 80 at ledge. Banjo deserves it too.)

I like Banjo a lot I can still remember his trailer and my joy after seeing it even if I never played his games (just on the back log of games I need to play 😅). When I first played him offline I thought he was a very weird character he felt like a smash 64 character with some weird utility options, that had very little use in pressure or defence and to rely on tools like his grenade to get in which isn't a bad thing but he doesn't have anything to open people or threaten people on defense to make it hard for your opponents to do there thing. Also because of his bad Arials and tilts it makes it hard to stap against characters that just out range him. Seeing as HDR changed his moveset for the better is very amazing, even though OG smash could not do it I'm glad that at least the fans are giving him the respect he deserves. Fun fact, both Banjo and Conker were originally part of the Marioverse, due to debuting in Diddy Kong Racing, which has a story campaign taking place in the physical world (that is the Marioverse). One can also easily recognize the design similarities between the Banjo and Conker series and Rare's take on Donkey Kong, especially DK 64.
However, while I can see Nintendo wanting to negotiate both Banjo Tooie and Diddy Kong Racing for their NSO emulator, as these were some of their best titles and they are running out of content for N64, I have doubts that Conker's Bad Fur Day will receive the same treatment, because...I think it may be a little at odds with the company image nowadays...

My main is DK, always loved him, but it's hard to play, despite me analyzing over and over the YT videos on the best DK players (ChunkyKong comes to mind), I was able to perform most of his trick moves (especially his turnaround air down B) but lack of experience kills me often (I got the game 4 weeks ago).
I also want to purchase Banjo Kazooie DLC, as I'm also a big fan of the franchise. He looks also very fun to play with, seeing the demo. Sadly, I feel I'm not good enough for online plays, I want to first being very good with DK and Young Link, and when that happens, I might think of purchasing that DLC and the character. The game is really fun but mastering a character is so difficult and time consuming. I found online some cracks who comboed to death my poor DK... I felt responsible for being so bad with him.
