  • An icon of antipodean music, the opportunity to see Tim Finn was not something to be missed. With just three Australian and three New Zealand shows, the tour was called “The Lives & Times of Tim Finn”. And with his back catalogue across Split Enz, Crowded House and his solo career, he could have played all night. Sadly, there was only time for 19 songs, six of which I videoed:
    I See Red (00:03)
    Poor Boy (04:26)
    Nobody Takes Me Seriously (08:35)
    Persuasion (13:35)
    Weather With You (18:14)
    Staring at the Embers (22:26)
Personally, I was hoping for a couple more songs from his solo albums which never got the recognition they deserved.
Tim’s voice is not what it once was and that took a little adjusting to (especially when those songs are so firmly implanted in your mind). However,
once I accepted that very few 71 year olds are going to sound the same as they did at 26 (“I See Red”) or even at 41 (“Persuasion”), I could lose myself in Tim’s brilliant songwriting, wonderfully recreated by his backing band. And Tim’s personality and movements took me straight back to those first days of Split Enz, men in strange suits, singing strange songs. Little did we know then what a brilliant musical career was being born.

always great to see Tim perform - wish there was a live release from the 90's and a remastered complete box set on DVD or Bluray audio

I was in two minds about going - his voice really isn't what it was but he's still got it and Elliot is fabulous. Thank you for Staring at the Embers - that one is particularly special to me - it helped me through a really tough time.

Yes, I share your feelings. It took me a little while to adjust. But he's got such a wonderful personality which still shone brightly, and as you say, Elliot really helped out. Besides which, the songs in their own right are so good that it was wonderful just being able to hear them all again. Thinking about it since, I believe he was very brave doing this tour. He must have known there'd be comments made about his voice, and it was probably the main reason he hasn't performed live in such a long time. I'm very glad he is now giving some more shows. It's up to his fans to decide whether or not they'll see him. But I'm sure there'll be plenty like us who will be glad that they did. Thanks for commenting.

Anything that helps connect me to the magic of SplitEnz is always always welcome
Voices come and go (Dylan) but energy intelligence and creativity always shine through 🌟

Yes, that was my feeling too. There was so much more to enjoy beyond Tim's occasional vocal short comings. And of course, it was wonderful to hear so many classic songs again. So pleased I got to see him.

I can remember clearly the first time I saw his video Fraction Too Much Friction on Spanish TV in the early 80s, I used to record as many videos as I could as we didn't have MTV nor many music programmes back them, and I would watch them over and over. Time has certainly flown for everyone of us.

Yes, time does certainly fly. By the time "Fraction Too Much Friction" was released Tim was already very much a household name in Australia and New Zealand. He did play that song, along with "Made My Day". I was hoping for one or two songs off his next solo album which I really liked. It was great having this opportunity to see him again.

It was terrific seeing him again after so many years. He had played a one off concert in Manly about a year early which unfortunately I couldn't get to. I'd been hoping he'd do some more gigs. When this tour was announced I knew my prayers had been answered. Glad you enjoyed the video.

Even the Bass player looks like Nigel Griggs who played a BC Bass back in the day. Is it him, perchance?

I , as an American, think that you Aussies and Kiwis should tell all all American artists to #$&# off and not play, buy or download a single one of our shit artists until the Finn Brothers, Crowded House, and Split Ends get into the Rock n Roll HOF. Get organized and get it done please. This is one of the greatest musical collaborative groups in the entire world and the crap they has proceeded in getting in before these immortal geniuses. So please get it done and do it loud!!!

You're not alone. A guy sitting a few seats along from me got up and walked out. There is no denying that Tim's voice isn't what it once was. And he did have a truly great voice. That undoubtedly explains why he hasn't played live for such a long time. But that said, I'm very glad he is now back on stage. It took me a couple of songs to readjust my expectations, but once I did, I could really enjoy the performance. Tim's wonderful personality shone through, the band was excellent, and there were plenty of bloody great songs. Anyway, you know that you probably wouldn't enjoy seeing him again. As for me, I just might.
