Haha I did this once in high school. I was one of the worst runners on the team and at one meet I just said “screw it” and went all out on the 800m. Basically ran the first 400m at my 400m speed and left nothing for the second lap. I met the same fate as this poor chap. But I did manage to stretch out the best runner on the home team, who probably didn’t realize who I was or what I was doing, which allowed the best runner on my team to pull ahead and win. My coach told me “That was awesome but don’t ever do that again.”
I tried to do it on a 5k run. It was my last race so I thought maybe just maybe I can will myself to stay pace. Charged out of the gate like I was running the mile. Didn't turn out very well for my final time lol.
Happened to me as well in grade 10. I used to run the 1500 and 3000 so I was quite inexperienced at the 800. I went out way too fast and did the first 400 like 2 seconds slower than my PB and then did the second lap in a horrendous 1:20.
@@MeguminIsWaifu Lol 1:20 is probably better than my second lap tbh… I was BAD. I only broke 2:00 once and that was in practice. I think my best time in a meet was like 2:08.

World record is 1:40. Definitely possible but these athletics are just taking it easy. The pacemaker has potential to do well if he trained himself to sprint full 800m
seriously when Rudisha ran the WR in London 2012 his first lap was 49.5. I'm pretty sure also that they always ask pacemakers to run fast (no-one asks pacemakers to run a slow first lap) and it's the runner's job to keep up with them if they want. I hate when the commentators think that the pacemaker has to always be right infront of the lead runner to be effective
@stealthysmirth i agree, this defo looked like a situation where a pace was asked for but then backed out of on the day. it happens pretty often in these events
say they asked for a 1:42-1:43 pace, the pacemaker would've been correct in going through in 49. bear in mind that the racers would then follow in around 50 or perhaps a very high 49 first lap. the finishing times would then come down to their endurance rather than a final sprint, as is the case with all of the fastest times ever

@@raymundlogo3521 thank you. But as I understood this guy had to be called "front-runner" because "A competitor who chooses the tactic of leading in order to win is called a front-runner rather than a pacemaker.".
Did something similar in the mile. Too nervous/excited so I went out really strong, and I went through 400 in 56...This was a high school race btw. I pr'd for 800m by 1.5 seconds enroute in 1:58, and then the crowd thought I was going to attempt a sub 4 so they started freaking out. I then came through lap 3 in 3:18, and finished in 3rd at 4:48. After the race the other team's coaches looked at me with these shit eating grins and tried not to laugh at me.
For those of u who dont run. I ran a pr of 1:59 for the 800m and ran a 4:44 pr for the mile and my coach dropped me from the mile senior year cuz my 400m time was better 51 secs even tho the 400m and 800m are not suppose to be run cuz they r too close (aka no rest time). My 800m time is still much better than the 400m time as far as cif qualifications. This means that my 4:44 time was complete shit compared to my 1:59 (supposedly amazing) 800m cuz a 4:44 isnt even remotely close a cif qualification. So if a person runs a 1:58 split and a 4:48 mile that is prob 10 times worse than this race shown here as far as pacing. But it prob means u could break 4:30 easily if the 1st half mile was 12 seconds slower.
@@kingqueen6848 When you look back it causes several problems. One is your focus is changed. Your only focus should be on winning. Second, looking back is usually when you are starting to feel you are at your max, you are looking back to see if you can slow down a bit and which most do. Third, you are sending a signal to your competition behind you, as soon as you look forward they automatically push forward to close that gap and surprise you and it tells them your situation. Last, it is a very non-Alpha thing to do. Looking back will make you look weak. Weakest that everyone sees. Nobody is going to let a weak person finish first or cheer for you.
You rarely see what happens to a suicide pace runner at the pro level. This is what it looks like. The anchor is out in the last 100m, he is going nowhere, and the entire field passes. In the world of recreational 5k and 10k, you see it all the time though.
Steven Turner I saw it almost every time in amateur race, those guys just couldn't help but try to show off how fast they are, and in the end they either forfeit or lose really badly.
It happened to me in my first race in my own town. It was a 7km race divided in two laps. Went my first lap with the beasts and then I barely finish the race running like a turtle. I did a decent time tough.
That is the 800 for you. First 200: I’m killing it. This pace is easy! Second 200: This is my day! Smooth as ice! Maybe I’ll speed up a bit!” Third 200: I think I’m still good. Just need to increase the effort. Don’t panic.” 150 to go: “I made a big mistake. This sucks. But the finish line is right over there. I can take anything for a few more seconds.” Final stretch; “I can’t move. Everyone is passing me. I hate my life. I hate myself. I hate this track. I want to move up to the marathon so this never happens again. Maybe I should just quit running entirely.”
I did this mistake once myself in sprinting in front of the pack right from the getgo. I always behaved differently in training, but wanted to set a mark in a competition. Ended up second last and you feel like shit, because you know you just fucked up.
This is not a fail, he is supposed to slow down at the end since he is a pacemaker and cannot really finish. He just sets a fast pace to make the others feel behind and get the need to go faster
Yes i do but you ll can only see/trace pace making from the beginning of a race. The runner seems to slow down at the end but the pace maker was tired/exhausted. He died out like most 400 meter runners to the end. He never gave up until they all pass him, again the pace maker set/hold/the timing of the race respectable. He did not win, he may have won if he didn t look back. His last 100meters was like their jogging/running at the beginning.
The pacemaker is actually a decent runner. His personal best timing for 800m is only 3 seconds behind the world record time set by Rudisha. 1:43 He could have won if he has strategised.
Yeah I ran the 800m for the first time ever at school and pretty much sprinted the first lap and was way in the lead not really knowing what I was doing and got so tired and out of breath I couldn’t even finish the race, I learnt my lesson. I should have just done the 100m as I am quick oh well
I did this when I "ran" track for only 1 year in the 8th grade. It was the 400, and my first meet, so adrenaline was high. I basically sprinted the first 2 turns then completely ran out of gas. I was lucky to even cross the finish line at all. That sure was a fun day for the ego.
49 low is not uncommon in Diamond League paced races. The 200m in 23 low were way too quick however, so that is why the pack backed off. 24 mid and 50 flat would have been more reasonable.
This is literally what happened to me once when I was running a 1600m but thought I was running a 800m. I was very confused as to why the bell was not rung when I finished my third lap (it was a 200m track).
@@elijahmalone7705 I did the 800m for literally all my years doing track and the coach probably decided to spice things up that day and stick me in the 1600m. I knew I was in it but I forgot once I started running xD
The problem is too often the pack just gets stuck behind a fast finisher who slows the race down tactically. Makes for a boring race, slow times, and fastest kick wins instead of the actual fastest 800 runner. Pacemaker keeps lazy pros honest.

All the top comments from people that think this is actually something to be embarrassed of when he just did his job and then chose to finish the race... there’s a reason hes a pacemaker and not an athlete in the field it’s because he obviously isn’t as good of a runner so he’s the pacer lol still great athletes though
Parents Good lord, at least someone that knows what a pacer's role is. These idiots think that the guy is a pro that wanted to win the race so badly that ran too fast for the distance...
He did his job terribly.... The race would have played out the same even if he wasn’t there. After 200 meters everyone realized they couldn’t keep with him and so he was useless to them. They need for him to be a couple feet ahead so they can try to stick with him and he can push their pace. If the rabbit was say 5 yards ahead then the front runner would be able to push the pace by trying to stay with the rabbit. Everyone else would follow behind him and therefor the race would be faster. However, here the front runner realized very early on that trying to stay with the rabbit was pointless. He was 25 yards ahead at least at 400. If the rabbit hadn’t sprinted the first 400 and done his job correctly then maybe everyone else would’ve been able to get faster times.

I hate when the commentators think that the pacemaker has to always be right infront of the lead runner to be effective
stealthysmirth Actually... Rudisha's first lap was 49.2 in London. But this guy ran 49 the first lap! That's a Rudisha type of pace! Too fast!

After the race the other team's coaches looked at me with these shit eating grins and tried not to laugh at me.
damn that must've felt cool when the crowd started going crazy, not so nice though when your pace started dropping lol

But why?
@@kingqueen6848 When you look back it causes several problems. One is your focus is changed. Your only focus should be on winning. Second, looking back is usually when you are starting to feel you are at your max, you are looking back to see if you can slow down a bit and which most do. Third, you are sending a signal to your competition behind you, as soon as you look forward they automatically push forward to close that gap and surprise you and it tells them your situation. Last, it is a very non-Alpha thing to do. Looking back will make you look weak. Weakest that everyone sees. Nobody is going to let a weak person finish first or cheer for you.

Do u even know what a pacemaker is?
Yes i do but you ll can only see/trace pace making from the beginning of a race. The runner seems to slow down at the end but the pace maker was tired/exhausted. He died out like most 400 meter runners to the end. He never gave up until they all pass him, again the pace maker set/hold/the timing of the race respectable. He did not win, he may have won if he didn t look back. His last 100meters was like their jogging/running at the beginning.
I agree with marlly taylor
Just goes to show how subtle pacing is in producing a good result.
I still respect the guy. Even if he does such a mistake and run for 1500 meters, I'd still not be able to catch him.
