  • A circular saw (commonly called a skill saw) is one of the first power saws that most people will have the opportunity to operate. Circular saws are affordable (on a scale of power tools) and multi-functional- opening up myriad possibilities for their owners.
That being said, there is a lot of information (safety tips especially) that a first-time circular saw user should be aware of before operating this tool.
In this video, I explain all of the parts of a Dewalt 20v circular saw (highly comparable to most other circular saws), detail the practical safety guidelines for using this saw, and explain the best straightforward method for operating a circular saw.

As a newbie DIY guy, I've watched several dozen videos, some twice, picking up different and complementary tips along the way. Although this presentation is informal, it's the most complete and useful I've seen regarding safety. Pros with power tool experience might neither need nor appreciate this thoroughness, but beginners should take it to heart. Great job, Handymom!

Thank you. I fix medical equipment, but after moving to the country, I find myself doing house projects, but I just don't know how to do these things. Never had anyone to teach me. I research and research and it'll take me a few days to weeks to do a project. But once I do, I finish quickly with safety as a priority. And now, I've begun teaching my daughters. You taught me the basics as well as safety. Thank you.

Your video was much more in depth (than other videos I viewed) at describing and addressing safety concerns that first time users of the circular saw are concerned with and wondering about, as well as how to use it. It's easy to get over confident with a seemingly easy tool and wind up with a missing finger or cut leg, etc. Thanks for going to great lengths to drive that point home!

I've seen a bunch of safety vids on the circular saw. A rare few of them mentioned staying on the line and never trying to correct your cut path while the blade is running through the material, so, excellent tip. Also, always support your cutting material so it won't sag and bind the blade (happens easily if you cut in the middle and not cutting an edge piece off). Also important for safety: always check the blade guard went properly back into place before setting saw down -- without the guard the saw could run circles around you, running on the exposed blade... Might save your toes! so, just check it. Thanks for posting.

Great tips! I accidentally cut someone’s patio brick once when I didn’t notice the guard was stuck before I went to set down the saw. 🙈

I was brought up in an apartment in the city, spent my entire life behind the computer and doing sports, never really held a screwdriver before. Now that I moved to the countryside to live in a house with a big backyard, I started growing a keen interest in learning and doing a lot of things by myself and with my own hands. I can't explain how excited I am to learn how to use all these tools and to actually build or make things with them. Living in the countryside is great.
