    100% pure awesome.
    Once, when I was scoring the Hang Gliding champs in Omarama, New Zealand, the week after the world gliding champs, Terry Delore had stayed on, and one afternoon he buzzed the landing area, pulling a loop over our heads, before landing perfectly, and gliding it right into his parking spot off the runway. Incredible.
    He gave us all a great lecture on Wave the next day.

    No propeller! They build up speed by diving. And they get height by a plane towing them to start, or a winch. Then they use thermals and wind and stuff to stay up.
    They have no engine :) But some pros can stay up all day, and cross the country without one :) They have a super efficient glide ratio with little drag. And they also have a fold away wheel to make it more aerodynamic. Only one wheel. After it slows down, the tiny skids at the wingtips also help!

    What is all this about SPINS....?? All I saw was an endless series of low altitude passes. Nice glider though. I prefer a shorter wingspan glider such as a Grob 103 which can do aerobatics although those long slow high banked turns are awesome. . These high aspect ratio gliders just never seem to lose energy....fantastic performance. Thanks for posting

    GAWD I luv this video!! I've come back here prolly a dozen times now just to watch it again & again, & just can't go on without saying something about it. I fly R/C Gliders (low intermediate level) and this is just an inspiration to go at it harder! From big wings trailing smoke, thru the big sweeping turns, the 'WOOSH' sounds, to the "Trespassers can be eaten" signage, what's not to like!?! And the music just adds to it.

    Subscribed > Like'd > Fave'd > All 6'a my nipples are tinglin'!!

  • @Snobiker13

    @Zlin0035 No engines, it's just the wind noise. And the trails you see behind some of them is ballast water. The water is used to make the plane heavier, to raise the speed where you get the best lift-to-drag ratio. It's dropped to make the plane lighter before landing.

  • @jkajewski1
    @jkajewski1 10 лет назад

    @andy gilchrist these gliders have a single retractable wheel located under the fuselage and they are a glider so they dont have a motor or prop, they rely on winds, thermals/ lift and tow planes

    +luv2jive as hotvair rises these plane are so light that the air actually pushes them up this is what makes them so flying far without any engines sometimes they can fly cross country on just one flight because of this hot rising air have you ever seen how eagles spin in the sky this is what they also do you sell flapping the wings

    Gliders often carry water in bags within the wings to give weight. The 'Smoke' trails you see is the water draining from the wings before they land.

    @alexmccaw1 that glider is not a model, it's the JS1 (from south africa) doing some flying test, and there, the pilot (who like doing spins ^^) is doing a spin test, but he is high, he didn't hit the ground ;)

    Well, another way to look at it is that the "fuel" for gliders is the potential energy (altitude multiplied by mass). The heavier they are, the more energy they have at a given altitude. This extra energy may be used to fly faster. Of course with a heavy glider it takes more energy from a tow plane to climb to altitude. And later, heavy glider will extract more energy from a thermal (rising air) while gaining altitude circling in a column of the rising air. But this comes free from the Sun :-)

  • @SuperAviatar
    @SuperAviatar 11 лет назад +2

    I have never flown a glider with water ballast.... the old Slingsby Dart 17 didn't have that facility! Hard to explain to non aviators that my longest flights have been without an engine... even harder to explain that a commercial airliner, engines at flight idle setting, glides better than a lot of purpose built wooden gliders! Just a bit faster though....
    Good luck trying to explain total energy... next step, Bernoulli....

    It is not smoke. It is water ballast being jettisoned right before landing. They usually take a lot (hundreds of pounds) of ballast water. This allows for much faster flight.

    Nice compilation. The music is a bit much though. Way too loud at the end.

  • @pilotavery
    @pilotavery 11 лет назад

    And that trail you see is water. Gliders take off with water to weight it down. So when the plane tows them, they have more momentum. Think throwing rock vs a paper ball. Same thing! The glider goes faster, and when they need to gain altitude for either emergency, or need to simply do a pass and pull up, it makes it hard with that weight and no engine, so they dump some water and pull up! If they didn't have any at all, it would be hard to build momentum, and they would slow down like paper ball

    Not smoke, water carried in tanks in the wings, improves the into-wind performance. You can't land with the water in the tanks, so it's emptied out just before landing.

  • @zzsnake
    @zzsnake  14 лет назад

    @bbestoloch He did those spins Voluntarily, Indeed the glider was in a special configuration, (I don't remember which one; if he had water ballast or not, or tail ballast or not... he did lot of spins during one month for the certification) but I was there filming his spins to analyse them on the ground, to solved it he probably put negative flaps, rudder opposite to the spin and stick forward, The pilot said that he didn't struggle to solved it
