Brings back memories of many a day (and plenty of late nights) spent with styrene + MEK in the Senior Industrial Design studio, working on prototype models for class critiques, back in the Uni daze. Various viscosities of CA glue and "zip kicker" were also regular go-tos. Ah, I can smell that "ethyl" now... and the xylene markers, Bondo, laquer, and all the various other things we all inhaled, working in the model shop back then.

this is some good stuff, thanks! I'd be surprised if anyone into diecast and mods would complain about this type of video. It's inspiring, at the least.
I've used both Evergreen and Plastruct for many years. The difference with Plastruct they have a lot more in the architectural shapes and other plastic materials such as ABS. I am not telling people to use Plastruct over Evergreen as I know that Plastruct is hard to find in a retail outlet but they do have a catalog. You can also find some of the more common card thicknesses in bulk on Ebay for a decent price. Styrene and balsa wood are great for scratch building just about anything. Thank you King as this is a very good primer for those that have never done this type of building.
Thank you Richard, I didn't realise Plastruct made products in other plastics so that is useful thank you! It is hard to find in shops in the UK and is the reason I haven't used it much, in fact the only time I've picked any up was from a model show stand. I'll check the catalogue for sure now if there's more shapes. All the very best and as always thanks for watching and commenting :)

Awesome idea! I now need to start investing in styrene for garage fixtures & interiors! I never thought about building my own interior. That could take this in new directions!
I love Evergreen styrene sheets. The material is always of a consistent quality. I have used 'Plastruct' parts in the past, especially their 'I' beams, gantry work, and their domes, cylinders and rods - I used to enjoy making science fiction models and dioramas. Their products are very well produced, but not all components were styrene - some were ABS (the plastic LEGO is made of), Acrylic, or Butyrate. The only thing that would definitely fix all together, was, and is 'Plastic Weld'. Like MEK-pak, I must have used gallons of the stuff. And been made to swear at it too. I had come within a hair of finishing a little diorama based on the classic war movie 'Ice Cold In Alex', and accidentally knocked a not-quite shut bottle of 'Plastic Weld' over, causing it to pour all over the 1/76 Airfix Austin K2 Ambulance, reducing it to a pool of plastic slurry in minutes. Deep joy. I like to use Tamiya Extra Thin poly cement nowadays, and I'm very fond of 'Ratio/Wills' textured styrene - I've used tons of their 'Chequer Plate'. The boxes of styrene offcuts, and 'greeblies' from plastic kits that I stored in the loft, were the bane of my late father's life. "Why do you keep this stuff?" "It's going to be useful one day..." These videos are so bizarre. I enjoy watching, I’m learning, find it quite relaxing but have no intent on doing this... but I now know what to do and could give it a go. It’s like going to school and enjoying a subject because you enjoy the teacher
Thank you very much. I was saying the similar thing to my son only a few days back about having a good teacher makes you learn...... Nice you say the same thing :) All the best !
Thank you..... I'm from Stoke though sometimes often get Lancashire thrown at me. Hoorah for the UK regional accents, we have some belters don't we LOL! All the best :)
Cheers. As a Yorkshireman myself, I knew you definitely weren't a Lancy. To me, it was just a question of which end of the midlands. It's amazing how much the accents can change in a relatively little amount of distance. :-)
Thank you. The ones in this I made myself from a Hot Wheels car. When I'm buying I get them from Monoblock Wheels shopmonoblock.com/ from Garage64 facebook.com/Garage64SG/ and for Greenlight ones I get from Modelmatic modelmatic.uk/collections/wheels ...... Hope these help.
I'd use 2mm if it's a flat base to keep it rigid myself. You could use thinner material if it was just going to be a show piece though and add extra strengthening points and make it part of the features if you want to replicate a replica chassis 😁
Another great how to Video, I enjoy all you videos and have learned a lot. I am just getting back in to the hobby and trying to get the proper tools. I was hope that you could put a list of what you use. I like the look of the scalpel you are using, looks like it has some weight to it. What brand/Model? Thank you and keep them coming.
Thank you Tom its appreciated. I was working on an Amazon list so people can have n idea of basic tools and advanced tools that I use and recommend. The Scalpel is a surgical scalpel doctors/surgeons use and are often found in Art shops. It does have some weight behind it you're right and is why I like it. It's not flimsy at all and must be at least 20 years old now. Here's something similar www.hobbycraft.co.uk/modelcraft-set-of-4-blades-scalpel-handle/568825-1000
Interesting, DAMN INTERESTING❗🤔 Only wish I could find the stuff locally. To actually see & feel the different sizes & thicknesses of what I was actually buying, which you can't really get a feel of online.😖
Hi Darren, the best place would now be Ebay or Amazon with this shutdown going on. Search for MEK and it will come up. There is a possibility model shops will still be doing online sales too.
Great video I commented on the old one but it got deleted ha ho ,you should do a little tour of your little sets aka the garage and stuff anyway cant wait for the next one my friend :)
Hi Kyle buddy...... I don't know why that would be I didn't delete for sure. If there was any swearing, even in joke, the filters I have on the channel will block them..... Just in case kids are reading and all that. I did toy with the idea of a Vlog style diaries too with a walk through of my workshop and cars but I thought that would be a step too far for people to be disinterested.
Fantastic what a fantastic lesson n how to it greatly helped me n when I hear Ethyl I straight away think of the comedy song oh yes they call him the streak, I said don't look Ethyl! Too late she was mooned lol I'm now a hooked subscriber 🍺🤓
Great video again, I want to do scale models but I’m in school and I have £30 to spend on buying the parts,so how much does styrene cost and how important is it compared to other things?
The best bet when going to a model shop is they often sell a bag of off cuts and they work out rather cheap, approx. £10 and will have a variety of sheets and sections to get you going.
Can you form the styrene to original dicast doors, hoods and decklids to make spares...of so would you use warm or hot water to form them? Inhave a lot.of hot wheels red line cars with hoods that are impossible to find...

Nice. So enjoyable!!!!
gobsmacking brilliant , amazing work,,,, your scale style is fantastic, great replica of the Capri, im working on Corgi 70s Trucks, and a few Matchbox Superkings from my child hood as a kid in England, great narrating, im too shy to do what you do lol,,, but keep up the good work , look forward to more of you sensational work
Thank you very much Alesis..... I too am shy and if anything this has given me a boost. Thanks for the comments. Just do what you love to do my friend :)
Well it’s no wonder I can’t find any at hobby lobby this guy has them all
Excelente trabajo, las butacas son compradas o las hace usted? Saludos desde Argentina
my styrene was obtained from dollar store gag gift cards, for one buck i got 8 gag gift cards that tare effectively credit cars with two thin pieces of styrene glued together so I got 16 credit card sized sheets . that being said id love to have square / cylindrical/ flat pieces and that fancy cutting board
Are you serious??? Amazing, AMAZING job. You do custom decals, custom interiors and custom exteriors. I've an idea, what about custom packaging?
Well.... that's for custom orders only 😉
@@SidewaysKing75 - Custom orders do you say... 🤔
I would blur out your name and address on the bottles of "Ethyl", but other than that, great video! Your precision and patience is incredible!
It's not my name, it's where I buy them from 👍🏻😁
Great video....just getting into Styrene work...hard to find around my area. Hobby shops here don't have it. Ordered from Evergreen. Thanks for adding your Styrene Diaries to your channel. I think they will be a great addition.
Thank you very much Joe. I'm glad you liked it. All the best :)
Wonderful
Thank you Alex
These videos are so bizarre.
Brilliant
Thank you
Awesome!
Excellent feature/tutorial. What would closest describe your accent, Leicester, Derby, Stoke?
Thank you..... I'm from Stoke though sometimes often get Lancashire thrown at me. Hoorah for the UK regional accents, we have some belters don't we LOL! All the best :)
Cheers. As a Yorkshireman myself, I knew you definitely weren't a Lancy. To me, it was just a question of which end of the midlands. It's amazing how much the accents can change in a relatively little amount of distance. :-)
Make a Miata death kart from only styrene!
Great info. You should be charging for this! lol
Thanks for sharing .
Haha Thank you Pete..... Sorry 'Holly'. Every time I see the Avatar it makes me smile. Big Red Dwarf fan here :) All the best!
What thickness styrene would you recommend for building a chassis? Thanks. 🙂
masterful.
Many thanks 🙏🏻
Brilliant work as ever. Could you put a link to the wheels and tyre sets you use ? Thank you.
@@SidewaysKing75 thank you🖒
Quick question pal, i need to make a custom base for my bmw 2002 as i destroyed the original, what thickness sheet would yu recommend?
I'd use 2mm if it's a flat base to keep it rigid myself. You could use thinner material if it was just going to be a show piece though and add extra strengthening points and make it part of the features if you want to replicate a replica chassis 😁
SidewaysKing75 thanks for prompt response..... cant wait for your next video to drop.🙌🏽
@@kingludba no worries and thanks hopefully not too long now👍🏻
Maybe a idea to make a tube frame car complete with Engine/supspension
We're heading that way *Spoiler alert* ;)
Death kart!
Thank you@@SidewaysKing75
When I hear "Ethyl" I think of Monty Python... some kind of reference there, but not sure... anyway, carry on ! LOL
umm quick question what is the thickness of those sheets mine seem to flop around
Interesting, DAMN INTERESTING❗🤔
Only wish I could find the stuff locally.
To actually see & feel the different sizes & thicknesses of what I was actually buying, which you can't really get a feel of online.😖
Great work dude! I've one question: do u think that acetone can be used instead of methyl ethyl ketone? Thanks and greetings from Mexico
Thank you.... I really don't know on that im afraid sorry.
kool , thanx
Robert
I can finally add a roll bar in the general lee
Does anyone know the thickness he’s using? I want to make a front splitter and rear diffuser but don’t know what thickness to get
I use mainly 0.5mm and 1mm with the odd 1.5mm on occasions 🚙🚗👍🏻
Where is a good place in the uk to get ethyl from? If i can get some i can use this isolation time to make stuff for my model cars.
Hi Darren, the best place would now be Ebay or Amazon with this shutdown going on. Search for MEK and it will come up. There is a possibility model shops will still be doing online sales too.
It is also known as solvent joining.
Thank you :)
Were can i get the M.E.K that you use? I would love to get some
Great video I commented on the old one but it got deleted ha ho ,you should do a little tour of your little sets aka the garage and stuff anyway cant wait for the next one my friend :)
Many thanks Peter 🚙🚗😁👍🏻
Great video again, I want to do scale models but I’m in school and I have £30 to spend on buying the parts,so how much does styrene cost and how important is it compared to other things?
The best bet when going to a model shop is they often sell a bag of off cuts and they work out rather cheap, approx. £10 and will have a variety of sheets and sections to get you going.
Thanks!
I guess there isn't any local shop that sells different types of polystyrene shapes.
Can you form the styrene to original dicast doors, hoods and decklids to make spares...of so would you use warm or hot water to form them? Inhave a lot.of hot wheels red line cars with hoods that are impossible to find...
I love your work and I love watching you do it. But, I do have a question, where do you buy your Methyl Ethyl Ketone from?
That's osm i m also a hot wheels lover n i also make different types of hot wheels stuff that u can watch in my playlist
What material you do use?
