I dunno man the beginning by Dave is absolutely beautiful... The creativity in it blows my mind. Changed the way I thought about the purpose of cymbals.
Just from seeing this video again, you can tell how much more musical steve gadd is with his solos in this video, hes playing a lot less as opposed to his counter parts who are just playing 32nd notes the whole time, he creates fills and licks that actually suit the latin feel that he himself set up in the beginning, and he leaves space so the big bursts of notes sound quicker, we should all strive to play more like gadd, by listening and playing what complements the musical style that we play.
Well said I agree with that too that less is more and its good to let the music breathe and allow for space in the piece and play to what's needed not just play all fast stuff to show off or fill the bar
I've watched this 40 maybe 50 times and still get blown away everytime. Love it when Steve "we're on a mission from" Gadd starts the cowbell rhythm they trade solos over. They all sound incredible!
I can't tell you how many times I watched this fucking amazing performance by three drum gods. One is better than the next. Tears well up. Groove churns inside. Holy fucking shit.

You nailed it! What's great about drummers is their style. Buddy is my boyhood hero, but you compare one style better than another. I like them all equally!!
What makes Buddy a genius to me was not just his solo ability ( which was unbelievable ) but his playing with and for the big band. He could amazingly play all those complex big band arrrangments from memory and not have any charts to look at. I gather he couldn't read music anyway so to play like he did makes him a drumming genius to my way of thinking.
