I've watched this 40 maybe 50 times and still get blown away everytime. Love it when Steve "we're on a mission from" Gadd starts the cowbell rhythm they trade solos over. They all sound incredible!
Just from seeing this video again, you can tell how much more musical steve gadd is with his solos in this video, hes playing a lot less as opposed to his counter parts who are just playing 32nd notes the whole time, he creates fills and licks that actually suit the latin feel that he himself set up in the beginning, and he leaves space so the big bursts of notes sound quicker, we should all strive to play more like gadd, by listening and playing what complements the musical style that we play.
Well said I agree with that too that less is more and its good to let the music breathe and allow for space in the piece and play to what's needed not just play all fast stuff to show off or fill the bar

I like how each carved out a different stylistic niche. They complement each other nicely and show some of the range of percussion as a musical instrument, not just a way to keep a beat.
I love these guy's ! I'm a drummer too but I just play for church's around town !! They are amazing and this is what keeps me inspired to keep playing is by watching other drummers !! But my favorite drummer is Terry Bozzio with the worlds largest kit !! he is a beast on his set by far...
Weckl is a cold machine gun, Gadd's cowbell is just gives a visceral need to dance, while Colaiuta's ones are like fire beasts whirling through the air.
This was erupting, and explosive with many surprises at every turn... individual style from seasoned influences, this took me on a rollercoaster ride in a cacophony of well timed chaos, as well as equipment choice to demonstrate their well executed experience...Just when I thought I favored one over the other, the other would surprise me with a different lick, style, or direction. Like to see more vids like this
Oh yes..If you start playing guitar, you can play something that the people around you would at least enjoy listening to, in roughly one or two years..But in one or two years you make only noise, if your instrument is drums!

Dave weckle, Buddy rich etc only some of the greatest drummers ever to live. People think just because someone can perform double bass really fast and drum really fast altogether makes them the best? when reality is there is no title you know. I mean if there was a title for the greatest drummer in the world? then 1) who decides who's the greatest? because every person will have their own opinion you know. 2) How would you decide who's the best? and 3) you would have to know and see every drummer in the world, which changes daily as there are new drummers entering the drumming world every day. Wonderful stuff. I particular like the way Steve Gadd's drums sound like depth charges. But all three are fantastic. I don't care much about who's better or best--this is music, not baseball. I just like hearing great players play, and these guys are great. Thanks so much for posting this.

What makes Buddy a genius to me was not just his solo ability ( which was unbelievable ) but his playing with and for the big band. He could amazingly play all those complex big band arrrangments from memory and not have any charts to look at. I gather he couldn't read music anyway so to play like he did makes him a drumming genius to my way of thinking.

As Mr. Gadd shows, sometimes less is more. I'm heading to the basement, break'n my kit down to snare, bass hi-hat and cowbell and grooving! Incredible technique from all three!
Certainly, they could duplicate it, generally. They are Masters! They decided on a playing order, a basic,slow groove, and trade 4's over the monstrous groove that Steve sets up after each genius states his opening. This will never get old, this clip!!
He was an innovator. The rest now had someone to emulate. His endurance was incredible. His motion was incredibly fluid. His ideas were unbelieveable. And they never stopped. He also read no music and played everything from memory. His ENSEMBLE playing was not human. He knew every part that everyone played. All these guys have the same sound, same licks and they're out of ideas in a few minutes.
All unique- though think Colaiuta appears to have best “fast twitch” leg muscles with his bass drum pedaling. Sort of like how tennis players, sumo wrestlers, high jumpers can do sudden movements within a limited space. Weckl plays great textures on cymbals and has nice sticking patterns. Gadd uses rudiments, doesn’t depend on speed, has his groove sound. Anyone lucky enough to play with the B Rich Band has impossible shoes to fill. BR was a monster on the kit- of which we’ll likely never see again for a long time. Thanks for posting.
This is kind of a funny story. I'm old and cranky, I admit it. I'm 65 and started music lessons at 7, so I guess been doing it about 55 plus years. We had a block party a cpl weeks ago and the neighbors wanted me to play some. I didn't want to screw with an amp and chord so I got this little Martin 0015. It's a smaller guitar but still full sized. I played a little bit and this neighbor about half my age had been running his mouth all night about musicians. He started saying who was the greatest guitar player and who was the best drummer like lots of people do He kept talking about certain musicians and who could do what and who had what pickups all kinds of crap. I was tuning by ear and thought I was flat on my E and it had carried on down. I handed him my guitar and asked him what he thought. He came back with, 'Oh, I don't play.". I kind of laughed a little and took the guitar back. Afterwards it really bothered me the way I kind of made him feel uncomfortable.I should have said something more like this. "What the fuck makes you think that you have the right to judge anybody on something you can't even begin to do yourself? You don't have the right to even have a fucking opinion." That is what I should have said.
Wow, true master drummers. The mentors and inspiration for young drummers of the 80s, 90s and today. To put it in perspective, they've been playing gigs longer than someone like Joey Jordison has been alive lol. For those that don't appreciate this, you really need to spend a few years behind a kit to even begin to comprehend their abilities.
