Fossil Forest & Abandoned Village of Tyneham, Jurassic Coast, South West Coast Path, Dorset

- This 11 mile walk takes in the spectacular Fossil Forest and the abandoned, reputedly haunted, Tyneham village, now part of the massive Lulworth Military (MOD) Ranges. We hiked along the incredible South West Coast Path, and part of the special Dorset Jurassic Coast, starting from a large free carpark at Whiteways viewpoint (BH20 5DE). Please check the Government website for firing times as parts of our route are closed when training is in progress.
From the carpark we walked over Whiteway Hill, which had an unexpected trig point, towards the coast. We were walking through a gunnery training area here, lots of old military vehicles, faux railway tracks and pill boxes, a bit spooky but also so interesting and unusual, like a hidden world.
After making our way along the Coast Path for a few miles we came across Flower's Barrow an awesome early Iron-Age fort that was enlarged and fortified by the Romans, over looking Worbarrow Bay and the English Channel. We kept following the coast's undulating hills and cliffs, the views were always terrific. We eventually reached the steps taking us down to the Limestone ledge displaying the geologically important Fossil Forest. We spent a long time just picking through the Limestone, discovering fossils, investigating the burrs left by the algae where the Cyprus type trees once stood. Such a great place to spend time.
We than made our way over to Lulworth Cove, just to have a look, it is one of those beauty spots that has earnt its' accolade! After, we doubled back along the coast, but instead of walking back over Whiteways Hill we went down towards Worbarrow Beach and sat by the sea, eating pineapple....why not?
Our last stop of the day was the abandoned MOD village of Tyneham, a spot where time has stood still and is reputedly haunted. This lost village still has some of the original buildings and some have boards to explain who used to live there before it was taken over by the military in 1943, to help the war effort during WW2. It is a strange and eerie place, like a time capsule.
From the village the carpark is another mile or so, but again, the views back are stunning, it was almost a pleasure to struggle up another hill 😀

Jurassic coast! Wow. When I saw the title I thought yes yes yes. And this did not disappoint. Another stunning video. Kat you certainly put alot of effort into the info given. 0:32 the path to adventure. Beautiful skies, oh my word those cliffs are stunning. Magnificent. I love how the landscape although is used by the MOD it is still kept beautiful 😍. The blue of the sea the green of the land and the colours in the sky just look stunning. Nothing can dampen the spirits only the waterproofs 😉😊. This makes me want to do the coastal hike near me ASAP again. You couldn't have picked a better tea spot.....the sun cascading its beauty on the sea behind you. Great capture. The fossil forest 😍 such an interesting place. I have to say the time and effort you put into your videos is incredible. Thank you for always bringing such great content, information and fabulous videos. Really enjoyed this adventure, may be one of my favourites to date.

CoCo and I are jealous that you can do 10-12 miles in a day! With the kiddos, we rarely get to spend a day out and about. Instead we do a series of smaller hikes when and where we can. Kudos to both of you!

A really brilliant walk. The coast here is so amazing with so much to distract you from walking onwards. I fear in winter I might well have to keep an eye on remaining daylight. Must visit Tyneham. It looks fascinating. I sympathise with the waterproofs situation. I forgot mine on one walk where there were slow moving thundery showers. As I was wearing a fleece I stuck it away in my rucksack to avoid waterlogging. I walked through two storms in just a shirt. When I got back to the car I could not find the cagoule so eventually checked the recesses of my rucksack once more. It was there. I had carried it with me all the time! Still enjoyed the experience (I keep telling myself). Have a great week. See you soon.
Live and learn Ivor, that sounds very much like something I would do too, find out it was in the rucksack all along! Can't beat a costal walk. Fresh sea sea and plenty of stretching views. We experienced the Jurassic Coast many years back when we visited West Bay and also went on a speedboat across the sea. Its a very unique coastline with its steep hills up to the top of the cliffs. Makes a great setting for a challenging but rewarding hike. The colour of the water was so rich, it looked like a beautiful day 👍❤️😘

Ceri & Kat, the coastline was looking beautiful for your visit with fantastic light and colours.👍 That chalk headland was a brutal and worthwhile climb👣 to get those views on the way up and the way down👍 Coastal walking is usually a great workout😊 So much to see along the way - fascinating geology, Lulworth Cove looked stunning and some really interesting military history. I've always wanted to visit Tyneham, seems really sad the the population were forced to evacuate. I read somewhere that it was originally supposed to be temporary but the village is still abandoned, really cool to see the remains of the buildings and the church!

Wow! Another gem of a hike and video guys!🤩👌. Such a stunning location! The views over the cliffs to the sea where absolutely beautiful! Really interesting walk, so much to see along the way. The fossilised forest was incredible, imagine what it must have looked like before the trees got taken away🥰🌳🌲. Great spot on the fossilised salt crystals Kat! And soo much information shared as always, love that about your videos. Glad the weather gods let you off for forgetting your waterproof Ceri😁👍. Ooh pineapple on the beach in the sunshine, almost tropical😎🍍🤩🙌. The haunted village was very cool! That was some beautiful walking along the sea! Glad that you stayed way from any "shells." Yes, stay on those trails. Really spectacular coast when the sun came out. The Fossil Forest was really fascinating. We just love this kind of stuff. A tin of pineapple is always good when one gets "hangry!" Awesome time lapse. No doubt about it - If you ever need a new job you two will be the most delightful and entertaining guides for trips to the green spaces out there! So it is cake time every time I watch a premiere from you (today a piece of Maulwurftorte - no pineapples included) and time well spent. This trip to the Jurassic Coast showed my a part of England that I did not know existed - and even more amazing to see how few people you met on the hike before you had your pineapple (of course - you could have done some brilliant editing). I guess it must be special for you as well to hike in an area that is not crowded, but still with amazing views and fresh air from the sea (but do carry a rain jacket in your bag at all times) ! So with hindsight maybe it is a good thing that the MOD swooped down on the area and made it into a military range - I think that has helped to preserve it in such a pristine state (except for the targets that did not look their best:-) So looking forward to your next movie and another good excuse for having cake and cocoa! "Oh I do like to be beside the seaside". Yes, I wish I lived a bit closer to some nice coastline. Unfortunately, Blackpool and Southport just don't cut it with me 🙄. I like Dorset and have good memories of childhood hols there and a uni' field-trip. What a nice touch (if a little sad) to see the long gone residents of the deserted village. My local mooredge is littered with forlorn ruins and I often find myself wondering about the families who lived there. Great film folks. Best wishes, Chris

Splendid coastal walk for sure! Stay away from the edge...my goodness, my vertigo. Just like a roller coaster walk...plenty of ups and downs! Such a beautiful sky. Love your narrations and sharing of such great facts! There is an area along our coast that has a tremendous number of fossilised trees, will see if I can get there this year. Was that a tank? Looks like some of the areas I did mortar training in Gagetown, New Brunswick, during my militia phase of my life. "Violence in the rock." Haven't heard it spoken of that way before...very appropriate! What a cool village too! Often find myself wishing I could go back, even for a few minutes, to see these places in their glory! Okay, not a place I want to spend the night! I see Kat walking ahead as usual... Keep up Ceri would you hahaha I'm soooo glad people are forgetting things on their channels and it's not just me, Shell of OB's outdoors forgot her contact lenses and now Ceri forgets his waterproofs brilliant!! haha sorry I feed on others anguish. Naughty Kat not using the steps to walk on at 5:40... #PATHEROSIONISREAL Wow that rusted up tank looked so cool. Even though it was a cloudy day it actually made for some awesome contrast in the shots!!! Just beautiful. Sandwich cam activated hahah love it. Shame that bunker was closed off dam the public and their naughtiness!!! I've wanted to visit the fossilised forest ever since it was rediscovered, you are so lucky to live near to these places. Great adventure guys!!!!

We think you are patient zero for YT forgetfulness, that or my old age lol! 🤗 or maybe my priorities are wrong, pineapple ✔ rain coats 👎 the path was so slippery it was so hard to follow at times, and it looked like big sections of the steps had been removed, maybe some work in progress. Lovely coastal walk and some of those paths looked a bit near to the edge, those landslips are a mare. Lots of ups and downs but the sea and the clouds were amazing, hard to believe it is a winters day and I remember that Portland video. The fossilised trees looked like giant footprints to me and I spent so many happy days at Lulworth Cove when I was young and over the last couple of years too. Never been to Tyneham Village before, so real interesting to see it and hear its history. Nice to see the snowdrops and inside the old church and what a great days walking that was, cheers Alan

One of my favourite parts of the British coast line, I'm glad to watch you enjoy it and even happier to be able to see it again, I must get back there. Tyneham has a sad history, the villagers were told it was a short lived temporary measure, but were never allowed to return. I understand why people my feel there is something supernatural about the village. I've seen many a geology group done on the fossilised forest ledge, a very special and important place indeed. Those beautiful cliffs of the coast are always a delight to see. Love the view of Kat looking back over the coast. So beautiful. The water is so turquoise down there. The sun did come out for you. Oh how the colors all around change in the sunlight, right? Kat is like a walking encyclopedia, Ceri. Aren't you so lucky? It's like having a LIVE Siri or Alexa always by your side. I just got home from a quick coastal walk around here in Hong Kong (beautiful weather for a change, but didn’t vlog as I did it more for a scouting trip for future photographs) and decided to tune in to this episode while having my dinner. What an absolutely beautiful walk you have there! That stunning coast and sea view, interesting rock formations, sea stacks are just gorgeous.
