  • Old Grey Whistle Test rendition of what Northern Soul is about. You can't ever capture the essence of the scene on video but this is as close as it gets! Apart from bloody Mick Hucknall comparing it to the early punk scene ffs, did try to edit him out but thought leave it in to stir some feeback lol
    Nice to see young Mr Hennigan doing his stuff (one of the two Mr New 6T's DJ's at the time) the other being Mr Sh*t hot Keb Darge of course! God I miss Stafford TOTW and Leicester Odfellows for that matter!

    WRONG!! It was the unappreciated and legendary Dave Godin ( a southerner) who first came up with the title of 'Northern Soul' in 1967. He had set up his famous 'Soul City' record shop in London and said he had noticed 'a lot of guys from the north coming in when their football teams were in town and asking for a different kind of soul music ....' This unusual and much rarer type of soul was the first vestiges of what was later to become known as 'Northern'. (indeed, up until that point - we always referred to this much more raw, unsophisticated and high-tempo soul as 'uptempo soul'. Yes Mr Godin did go onto to write a regular column in the Blues & Soul magazine - but that was not until June 1970 - a full 3 years later.

    seems to be a lot of confusion about the origin of the term NORTHERN SOUL!! I heard previously that it was a guy in LONDON that had many Northerners while up for football matches visiting his record shop,and asking for faster type tunes!!He then started the term to identify what they were actually after musically. this explanation seems more logical to Me!! [from mid 50s] because LONG before N/S, MODS,,internet ,etc.only record shops [and radio LUXUMBERG with a weak signal fading out on song or artist or title,found out eventually [after establishing rappor,get owner to look for ME in the SWANS CATALOGUE[which listed present records,and previous releases on every singer!!] which is why I have a record COLLECTION which I would be only too pleased to match against ANY n/s dj. simply because these ARTISTS//SONGS should be heard!!!many of the best ARTISTS//SONGS are ballards,[by the best singers,all who come from the singing in Churches.a few examples DINAH WASHINGTON,BROOK BENTON,SOLOMON BURKE,ESTHER PHILLIPS,ARETHA FRANKLIN,ERNASTINE ANDERSON,CLARA WARD,the list is endless.

    • @thesoultwins72
      @thesoultwins72 7 лет назад

      + soulfella ......Actually, there's no real confusion on this topic. As I have already stated above it was Dave Godin (a Londoner) who was responsible for the title of 'Northern Soul' (in 1967). Godin was a bit of a 'strange' character in real life - a confirmed homosexual, vegan (long before it was trendy to be one) and an unmitigated arty-farty snob, yet was pre-eminent in the development, growth and success of Soul music in Britain throughout the 60's & 70's. (Berry Gordy actually consulted with Godin over how best to launch and promote Motown into the British music scene). Later, Godin, David Nathan and Robert Blackmore established their hugely influential record shop 'Soul City' in London (1967) and began turning out their own recordings by 1969. I am privileged to own several of these on the original Pink/Midnight Blue label (Chris Jackson, The Packers and their single biggest hit - Gene Chandler's 'Nothing Can Stop Me'). Interestingly, when Godin became a journalist in the early 1970's and joined Blues & Soul magazine - he embarked on a weekly personal and highly vitriolic campaign against Ian Levine through his column. (not surprising really as they were both rampant homosexuals - and you know how 'bitchy' they can be sometimes!) It was quite amusing reading these spiteful barbs flying between them each week - which were largely based on who knew most about Soul music and had the biggest record collections! (Levine had over 20,000 45's - but Godin had a reputed 25,000 - which he claimed was full of absolute classics unlike Levine's and full of dross!) Whatever the case it is truly sad that Godin never really received the credit and kudos he deserved for his undoubted contribution to not only Soul music but to popular British youth culture in general. His death in October 2004 met with hardly a ripple - yet much less remarkable people have been accorded far greater accolades. I remember meeting him at some all-nighter or other and was astonished how this tiny wizened old man (he was probably in his 40's by then and I was still in my late teens!) could be such a 'tour de force' of Soul music. A real giant - and deeply missed.

    • @soulfella1
      @soulfella1 7 лет назад

      The SAoul Twins/// Godin, if memory serves Me correctly, was at art school with M. JAGGER, and introduced Him to Blues, Soul etc. Later, regretted this, viewed Jagger took advantage of Black Artists, when asked by Jagger, to introduce Him to M. Gaye told Him to piss off,or words to that effect.Regarding the record collection scene,would gladly compete with anyone you've mentioned,a huge collection means nothing, it is not a question of quantity, but of quality, so in Levine's 20,000,most iv'e heard ,are second rate.I think, that I covered this, regarding bought from a Charity shop???So, sit there, and pick??can you hear them?? Proberly not, so 4000 bought, [given away by the owners] then, pick the best[from your judgement[ no wonder N/s mostly lack real soul.Stuff I have were all bought on merit ,"DO I LOVE YOU ETC"never heard it, BUT at that time, bought "TOO LATE BABY, TOO LATE" by ARTHER PRYSOCK, would STILL make the same decision now. On youtube, have an earful, full of A Soul, great singer, backing, total class, from the minute it starts.Just one, as stated, bought on merit.

    • @soulfella1
      @soulfella1 7 лет назад

      The SoulTwins/// sorry for the misprint, GODIN, apart from the record shop,was also a journalist [first, I would think]which proberly explains where the finance for the shop came from.As stated previously would have gladly competed with these guys, another, was the d/j at "THE SCENE" a true mod mecca in the early 60s," GUY STEVENS, " who, I know, from experience [went there,often] played some good Soul tunes, WHAT everyone seems to miss, is that in the South, We would OFTEN buy ALBUMS, firstly, because you get more for your money, and if the Singer is good enough, you get a great listening experience, sometimes, even finding a tune as good, sometimes better, than the one you bought it for, SOUL???? try "AIN'T THAT GOOD NEWS" [ALBUM] SAM COOKE, one side, uptempo, [can be medium paced], great if you really know how to dance,other, slower more serious lyrics, that appeal to the emotions, and the intellect, and in some cases, make you THINK.IF, you really know your soul music, "reflections of country and western greats"recorded late 1962, issued early 1963" ESTHER PHILLIPS" a soulful album, which would blow away the opposition,THEN, OR NOW!! Forgot to mention, STEVENS, figured largely,on SUE label,some of which, could EASILY compete with who you've mentioned, LEVINE, NO DOUBT, Godin, more serious rival!! ON singles, who really[at Home] really want's to get up,every 2 & half minutes average single play time] a distinct advantage, have the North never heard of compliation l/ps , different singers, every track??Know ANY N/SOUL D/J who want's a deck challenge, make a change,from the same old, safe,tired stuff always played,should not a D/J, be playing Soul tunes, that people have'nt heard, true D/Js job???On mixed l/p, have loads, many Tamla, with all the different singers featured, know STEVIE WONDER "BLOWING IN THE WIND"?? The classic "IT'S MAGIC" or SNAP YOUR FINGERS" BARBARA LEWIS, seem unknown to the NORTH!! THE JARMELS"A LITTLE BIT OF SOAP" the absolutely superb,Greatest Soul Singer" BROOK BENTON" covered it, think in1970, completely different, both great,first,very early 60s know some of these on youtube,have an earful, would be interested in your opinion.

    • @thesoultwins72
      @thesoultwins72 7 лет назад +1

      +soulfella......thanks for 'cut & pasting' the info about Godin from Wikipedia - although it's nothing new. (and besides anyone can do that!) What I wrote is anecdotal and based on my own memories from the time - which I accept may be a little unclear as it is nearly 50 years ago! (eg; I think I got it the wrong way around - Godin had 20,000 45's and Levine 25,000!)
      All I do know is that as a 'northerner' myself and growing up in the mid-60's I largely listened to anything and everything on Motown, Atlantic, Stax etc. I also religiously read 'Blues & Soul' - but do clearly remember adverts and features on (now infamous) Soul clubs both in the 'North' and South. So I was fully aware of places such as the 'Up the Junction' (Crewe), '100 Club' (Oxford St) and 'Goldmine' (Canvey Island) and the vast difference between the types of Soul music being played in the South compared with the North - particularly the 'Goldmine' which largely featured James Brown and other 'funk' stars.
      Unlike you, my brother and I (I am a twin - hence my sobriquet 'SoulTwins'!) mainly bought 45's and didn't really mind having to change them as we had convinced our parents to buy us DJ'ing equipment for our birthdays and had 2 turntables and mixer! We did obviously buy LP's - but this was mostly due to the fact that as we started collecting 'rarer' records, they were simply not available on 45's. (or if they were, we could not afford them as there were only limited copies available).
      What really got us 'hooked' though - was that our best friend at school had an elder brother who was a Mod. (he was a really smart switched on guy - always dressed immaculately and drove a beautiful Lambretta SX200!) He also had an amazing record collection and after school we would always go around our friend's house and listen to his records. (we had never seen/heard of many of these records before - Ramsey Lewis, Nella Dodds, Mamie Galore, JJ Barnes, Major Lance, Bettye Swan etc)
      We became very friendly with our schoolmate's older brother and he sold us many of his records as he needed the money to buy a house as was getting married. We still have these records to this very day! The older brother used to talk about clubs like the 'Twisted Wheel' and 'Oldhill Plaza' (which was a massively underrated Soul club just around the corner from where we lived!) Sadly, we were still too young to attend these hallowed venues - but totally recognise the important part they played in the development of what later became known as 'Northern Soul'.
      Whilst I appreciate the different 'genre' of Soul music between the north and south - I have to say that growing up mine and my brother's affinity strongly lay with 'uptempo' soul (the name it was always referred to before Godin infamously renamed it as 'Northern'!) Despite that, I distinctly remember when we would go to London on school trips etc - we would immediately head off to South Balham and the 'Soul Bowl' record shop, which we had started regularly buying from by mail order. Most of what we found there was 'Funk' etc - but they sometimes had rarities that we would pick up for peanuts!
      However, another major source for us as our need for rarer (Northern) Soul grew - was SelectaDisc records in Nottingham. To repeat - most of these buys were for 45's with the occasional LP thrown in for good measure. So to this day - the vast majority of our 'Soul' collection is on 45.....and is still lovingly cherished and enjoyed. It is the music of our (long-gone) youth and of a very special time that we both miss immensely to this day!

      HI, to be honest, Godin, even more so, Levine, were never important to Me, what I bought, I would match against anything they got, something neither seemed to do, was get the jazz,[with Soul] or the Gospel,many of which not only match their choices, but better them!Something else,[impression gained] WHAT about the 50s?? One of the Singers i have [50s] taught Jackie Wilson, group leader's instance, for J.W, to take over as lead singer fairly early buy,[1960] was an l/p, titled" THE TWO OF US" Brook Benton & Dinah Washington,couple of uptempo, rest Soul Ballads, for Me, NOTHING any of these guys could produce,could top this album,track for track.The Esther Phillips l/p[mentioned earlier post] same thing,Aretha Franklin, if honest, most people know Her from June 1967,RESPECT,had a couple of Her singles, about two years earlier,have a good selection of Her l/ps. Nancy Wilson, have quite a few of this superb Singers l/ps,including early sixties.Clubs in London, Flamingo,The Scene, in the tv program",Northern Soul,living for the Weekend"Flamingo is mentioned, and the fact that Soul Music slowly spread to the North,have you watched it? it's on you tube.Something else, generally missed[by all] was Jump Blues, some great tracks,from the 40s, and 50s, have a listen to the tracks i listed, would be interested in your impression of these,some of which, are early 60s.

      +paulopbroughton HI, yes, memory correct, [12inch version, extended ]vocal one side, instrumental side2.like other notable songs [and singers]covered by Hucknell!! the scene[northern?? ] unaware of,Southern based. why on a few of the Blackpool posts do they play 7 day fool,? [ singer in question,have a few of Her L/Ps,with better dance tracks,let alone the ballads [like " AT LAST"]which brought Her into prominence. for ME, a good D/J would be playing tracks People have not heard,rather than the same old,often played tunes. actually came across this,in the 90s,same tracks,different order.

      +paulopbroughton so why doe's it never seem to get played on n/s posts now?? [ to each His own] more soulful than any posts on N/S I've listened to.the only good track I heard[on N/S,was one of my 1960s tunes,[JOE TEX,"SHOW ME".]gonna upset n/s fans,"DO I LOVE YOU",at the time this was issued,[never heard it] I bought this track" TOO LATE BABY,TOO LATE" by ARTHUR PRYSOCK.if I had heard both at the sametime,would still buy the PRYSOCK tune.More adult lyrics,better singer,and first class backing[from the minute it starts.] not trying to upset, just stating a point of view,tune is on utube,
