SPOTTING A BAD FEP! LISTEN TO THE SOUND! MARS PRO

  • Just thought I would show you how a leaky FEP sounded like once its leaked a bit of resin out. The USB that came with the printer is so bad that it corrupted any data I put on it! Be warned don't use it! It put so much strain on the FEP it started tiny leaks at the sides which spread quickly! I saw a tiny bit of resin after each print but never understood how it got there and was in denial. I should have changed it waaaay earlier! easy to clean up at least!

Hear a slight stick can also just mean your print is adhering to the build plate and pulling on the the fep and its snapping back down. Thats why the call it a FEP.. cause of the sound it makes. ;) When you clean your VAT put some water in it before you start your prints and press down or up on the fep and see if there is any leaking happening, its a good way to check.

It was a leak. A tiny one. Glad i caught it in time. My rule now is if ANY resin is sticking the fep to the screen then there a leak.... unless you havent cleaned it properly.

@@turkeygerky2781 Yeah a lot of testing is what I've been doing with this as I'm fairly new to resin printing but have learnt so much from people and my own experimentation coming from fdm printing. So I've pretty much been studying all the problems and weird sounds of the mechanics and fep and all that and what causes it and why. Not to mention all the thickness needs of supports required to prevent faliures. But shapes with large inner chambers can suffer problem lines from the models peel forces. Fdm is more reliable here. Sometimes you cant even out peel forces and it makes some designs difficult to print. But the quality is very good but its also more difficult to post process due to its brittleness. Curious how the prints last in the sun or in general even if painted or plated?

It's not called FEP because of the sound, it's the acronym of Fluorinated Ethylene Propylen. If you were serious ;-)

Great call on inspecting the screen! I had my FEP leak and didn't think at all to check to see if the screen was stull flush. Sure enough when I checked it wasn't level and opening it up revealed there was resin in the crevice.

Super grateful for this post! I started hearing the exact same sound and paused the print to investigate. I basically had a little buildup on the bottom of the tray that was sticking. I pulled the tray out and made sure there was no leakage, it was fine. Then I took a dull plastic putty knife and scraped along the bottom of the tray and it felt like it was a little thick. After a little swishing and scraping, that thick feeling was gone. There were no chunks as far as i could tell. Slid the tray back in, started the print back up and no more sticking sound.
My print is 96 hours, generally my prints are 15, so well see how this looks when its done. Hopefully wont have any issues, im at 65% now!

did you try to create a vat mix program? if the resin has sedimentation in the vat, if you leave the resin many days in the vat, you can run the vat mix program before you print. just put the smallest object possible in the slicer, slide it outside the print area, adjust the layer high to the smallest possible like 0.001 and create a printable file, check for how much resin will be used it should be ZERO and you are ready to "print". it works like a charm for Anycubic printers.

So I pushed it down and changed my FEP/VAT and the noise went away. I did NOT have any leaks prior though, so I don't know what caused the FEP to stick to the LCD in the first place.

No it was resin on the underside of the fep. Ive come a long way since this video and learnt tons thanks to all the feedback and the 3d printing community. Deal with it later. Ensure no resin is underneath the fep after the print. Just clean everything underneath. If you know its dry before the print and theres a tiny bit of resin after, then you got a tiny leak.
