That looks like you are improperly using the Z flashing which is something you would use to cover a wall penetration which it does not look like you have. The z flashing edge thats closer to the wall is supposed to go underneath siding in a wall penetration and abut the studs and protect water from intruding from the top edge of a body penetrating into the wall. It looks like you are just using it to complement the siding but it's not going to perform the way it's supposed to because water is going to run behind the edge touching the wall. It looks like all you have is paint peeling off the siding and ends of batons rotted out. Since the siding boards still looks structurally intact and not overly rotted out I can see why the owner did not want to have it replaced. I think the less expensive route would be to remove the batons and sand and repaint the peeled painted areas. Then replace with new batons.

Um, what's stopping water from running down wall and into the house?? I wouldn't do a hack job like that even if I signed a liability release. Do you work for a house flipper or what?

Dude what are you doing? Water will shed off the wall and behind your flashing. If you install felt over it then it is sort of okay. What happens when they need to replace the shingles and your zbar flashing prevents that? How will they waterproof the roofing. You needed to install counterflashing to allow for future roofing.

I’m just curious, what was the to install z flashing if that customer didn’t want to do everything correctly? When it rains, water will go behind those z flashing anyway, now probably will take longer to those area dry out because of those flashing block airflow. Lol
I’m not a professional but just my curiosity

    • @pensive69

the home or building owner has a lot of hard decisions here.
i think Eric said they were going to stucco next.
there is the issue of rotted siding all along on the structure so
water has been a problem for years.
will the stucco crew use siding membrane or stucco papers.
how to address water entry along the flashing or missing flashing under the Z bar.

      @theroofbeaver 2 года назад

Ya if he does this he would stucco over rotten wood siding for sure 🤔

The problem with accepting customer demands to do things a cheap/bad way that you know isn't right: at some level, you're going to be assigned some responsibility for the result. If you want a consistent flow of good customers who pay well and respect your expertise, jobs like this one in your portfolio will ultimately hold you back.
I know this from both sides: as a higher-end customer (a homeowner who shops for contractors by inspecting their past work) and as a vendor (a consultant whose economic survival depends on getting good clients from whom more money, more respect, and better results come hand in hand). It's a pretty lonely and depressing experience to be the subcontractor backed into corners, forced to do inferior work to pay the bills. It might be better to just take a job at a more prestigious shop until you have the resources to confidently refuse jobs like this one.

I wouldn’t of bothered putting flashing on the wall because the stucco guys would first have to repair the plywood on the wall then put their weep screed. That’s like working backwards🤷🏻‍♂️.

The rot probably goes deeper than just what the siding shows. I dealt with buildings with this kind of rot and learned that the wood framing inside the walls and roof need replacing as well.

Holy shit Batman did you see all of that wood rot?, yes I did Robbin but what can you do if the homeowner is a true bone head and just doesn't want to pay to have it done right?, well we can send him some termites to finish off all of that rotting wood in there and that will teach him right?, no I don't think so Robbin because you just can't fix stupid and this homeowner certainly fits that description, cheap and stupid is a bad combination to say the least. Good luck with that one Einstein!.

      +bill smith Interesting comment :
1: I didn't use step flashing because under the shingles there is a 4 x4 "L" metal , what I did , I used a layer of self stick under the L metal , then I used modified roof cement to bond the shingles to the L metal using asphalt primer.
2: The contractor that hired me didn't want to change the siding , so he went over with 2 layers of waterproofing felt and then chicken wire and stucco the entire wall.
3: In order for this to leak sir , will take years if not ...till they replace the roof.
Sometimes the roofer has to work according to the budget , it's interesting to read your comments , that gives me an idea how to explain the job in progress the next time.
If it was my call in this job, I would have replaced the entire roof , but unfortunately sometimes people has to deal with other expenses and the budged is limited , all the owner wanted is to fix the water leaks , and that's what I did .
      Thanks for your comment.
      Eric.

I agree, even the insurance companies want to avoid doing an entire roof if they can. So imagine a homeowner who has to foot the bill himself, he certainly will want cheaper alternatives.

I like your video. Your instructions were good. You didn't do good on filming the video. Maybe have someone else hold the camera while you are showing how to do the job. In some of your video, I couldn't see what you were doing because you had your camera facing the wrong direction. And you moved the camera a lot. No bueno.

First off never use silicone it peels off like nothing and water gets underneath it easily. Always use Rainbuster. Second off those are some of the worst cuts I've seen. You need to bend the metal with tongues to get a precise bend and also use a pencil for marking. I'm a pro so I know everything I do this way better than he does.

You should have rip cut out the lower portion of that rotted out plywood, and slid the flashing up underneath the plywood. There is absolutely no benefit in having z-bar put on top like this, you could’ve just use flat metal. Also the fact that you didn’t do any caulking at the top???? that water is gonna get down in there and continue to rot it out this is a pointless video that only shows that you , and or your boss are not competent to be doing home emprovement projects.
