Even if Toyota uses BYD hybrid engines, it still faces at least 3 big obstacles. 1. Interior not as tech savvy as Chinese EVs, 2. Production cost not as low as China's, 3. Slower model change cycles than China's. We are still not talking about autonomous driving technology of which China is sure more advance than Japan's.

Rapid model replacement cycles mean cars become obsolete quickly. Consumers do not like it at all. The reason for changing models so quickly is because of intense competition in the automotive industry.

depends 100% on application…a PHEV with 50 mi. EV range could be less efficient than a HEV if it’s never plugged in and always drives extremely long distances. Even the dodge Ramcharger is a HEV even though it cannot be run purely off gas…it needs gas for the generator to recharge its battery to run the EV motor. If a company does not own the technology, then the other reason to choose their products will be build quality. I think for cars this is an important factor. The Chinese cars used to be known for subpar quality at lower prices. But with more automation this seems to be changing pretty quickly. Meanwhile, more and more dodgy practices from Japanese brands are being exposed and the attitude of the Japanese makers are quite concerning.
Personally I am extra worried about 2 things. First the fake safety tests. The airbags were set to pop by timer instead of sensors during collision tests. As a result there's quite a few photos and videos with completely smashed cars and zero airbags deployed and multiple fatalities. Secondly cutting corners in materials. The same model say Camry with thinner and thinner steel pipes over the years as firewall "safety bar" that stands between me and the engine. The Japanese cars are so often mocked as "energy absorption boxes" in China and you can find photos of accidents with a Chinese car sandwiched between 2 Japanese cars with smashed front and rear while you can hardly see a scratch on the Chinese car.
It used to be said you have to choose between fuel economy and safety. Looks like that age is now over.

Well engine may be the same, but then other factors like styling may be different. It just like the V8 engines in many luxurious continental car but the brand and styling is different. I can understand that Toyota is branded as reliable and economical in total ownership. But then since the Chinese are ahead in the EV, Toyota need to strategize and not to loose too much market and buy time to develop some new technology vehicle. So working with BYD is one of the way to help Toyota to learn how the BYD manage excel their business so fast. You must be objectives when come to business and knowing that you are loosing market share by the hours and not even days worldwide.

Any Hybrid is a compromise between full EV and full Fossil fuel. I had a 2013 Leaf, both the best and worst car ever. Performance was amazing, but the battery was tiny and reducing... it was old Nissan technology. So my solution was the Corolla Hybrid. It's the BEST car I have ever had. It does have amazing technology, it goes twice the distance of a fossil fuel only car, that is a step in the right direction. It has never let me down, I get 800 to 1000 ks on 46 litres if I drive in eco mode. I will trade it in on a Model 3, just waiting for the cost curves to bring the model 3 prices below $30,000. EV advocates keep on dissmissing the usefulness of hybrids. They are a useful in between vehicle. Owning a hybrid really makes you wish you just bought a full EV. Just don't get a 2013 leaf, like I did.

Yes, NiMH batteries are heavy, and they're old tech compared to LiIon. But they have some good points too. First is lifespan. They do not degrade by the calendar. 25 year old NiMH batteries are still working today. Second they are non-combustible. Third: No Cobalt. And that's about it. Each cell is only 1.2V. So very low energy density and the chemistry is slow compared to Lithium, so no regen braking.
They were the best batteries Toyota could use when they first released the Prius. But it restricted Toyota to a very small traction battery.

While Japan was indulging in self gratification, the Chinese have been working feverishly 24 7 and leapfrogged them in the NEV space. Many sane people in Japan are now finally realizing the fact that the leadership of Toyota have been extremely toxic to the Japanese industry. Japan need to make big changes and do it quickly.

Unconfirmed sources means Sam is just randomly talking.
Toyota is overhauling their hybrids for 2027-ish. Toyota hybrid's since the 1st gen Prius are the same conservative design that has been tweaked for cost savings and reliability - but the same basic system.
Nickel metal hydride has been good enough - and less costly. Hybrids don't need large batteries - although PHEV do, I don't think plug-in hybrids make sense. A Prius battery is suitcase sized - light enough for one person to swap is an hour.
A gasoline car like a Yaris is less costly to own long-term than any Toyota hybrid or EV.
When you can DIY hybrid repairs the Toyoya hybrids can exceed 500,000 miles at very low costs - if looking for a Methuselah car. Lots of forums for Toyota hybrids
A strength and weakness of hybrids is that they are efficient as city cars - not so much for distance traveling. Toyota is attempting to build new hybrids that are very frugal on long trips - can they succeed? This hinges on a super-efficient gasoline engine - which is mostly theory at present .
If BYD can build cars for less, then Toyota will build in lost cost nations, but many of those societies lack skilled workers.

Sony is more than happy to sell their photographic sensors to Nikon and others. BYD will profit from their relationship with Toyota and build a level of name recognition they probably wouldn't be able to achieve in the US, since the government is intent on taxing BYD to the hilt. As long as the tech doesn't hurt Toyota's reliability and low-maintenance record, it's a win-win for both companies. It takes a smart company to admit that someone else does it better and change course. It might just be that by, say, 2040 the US will have the grid to support EVs, and I'd have no problems buying a hybrid with Toyota reliability and that kind of efficiency. As for EVs, I'd also wait until battery tech doesn't have all the negatives related to temperature, the extraction/refinement environmental costs and the geopolitical issues; I think there's lots of potential for battery tech evolution and am willing to wait it out rather than invest in something that's so far from ideal.dddddd
