Kensington Philadelphia Drug & Crime Problems
Violent crime and drug abuse in Philadelphia as a whole is a major problem. The city’s violent crime rate is higher than the national average and other similarly sized metropolitan areas.1 Also alarming is Philadelphia’s drug overdose rate. The number of drug overdose deaths in the city increased by 50% from 2013 to 2015, with more than twice as many deaths from drug overdoses as deaths from homicides in 2015.2 A big part of Philadelphia’s problems stem from the crime rate and drug abuse in Kensington.
Because of the high number of drugs in Kensington, the neighborhood has a drug crime rate of 3.57, the third-highest rate by neighborhood in Philadelphia.3 Like a lot of the country, a big part of this issue is a result of the opioid epidemic. Opioid abuse has skyrocketed over the last two decades in the United States and Philadelphia is no exception. Along with having a high rate of drug overdose deaths, 80% percent of Philadelphia’s overdose deaths involved opioids2 and Kensington is a big contributor to this number. This Philly neighborhood is purportedly the largest open-air narcotics market for heroin on the East Coast with many neighboring residents flocking to the area for heroin and other opioids.4 With such a high number of drugs in Kensington, many state and local officials have zoned in on this area to try and tackle Philadelphia’s problem.
I was homeless. The way I got off the streets I stayed away from drugs and alcohol .Got help where I could and worked any job i could. You can do it to.

This is not poverty... this is not homelessness... this is (for the most part) a chosen lifestyle of drug use... that morphed into addiction... with the end result of nothingness. I've watched first hand a family member go from "having it all" to what you see in this video. I thank God they made the decision to accept the help that's available and step out of the lifestyle before it was too late. Everyone must understand the truth... a drug addict must first make the decision (for themselves) that they want to stop before ANYTHING can be done to help them.
Watching all of these lost souls, each of them carrying a sack or a back pack. Walking from here to there with really no destination. No direction, no plans, no life. Just existing in trash and filth. Zombies really, but with a heart beat. What a sad and tragic existence.

You walk in that park and you could see hundreds of dirty syringes….There was a video not long ago shows a guy trying to brake in the disposable container I guess he could not find the needle on the ground.

@@melanietoth1376 Pittsburgh, approximately 350 miles directly west of this place (section of Philadelphia) has the usual problems, but nothing like this. Same governor...very different cities. Pittsburgh officials have no tolerance for homeless presence, and the downtown area has no sidewalk or city park tent- livers that I have ever noticed. Benches were removed from Market Square a few years back, to discourages gatherings. Low tolerance for homeless condition and for public drug injection gives a city an entirely different look.
This had been going on for a long time. Longer than Wolf has been in office. What can be done to fix this?

I don't understand why the local officials allow this to continue in their streets. It is their moral obligation to help these people with seeking treatment instead of enabling them to continue down this destructive path. Terrible what the city is allowing to take place in the streets of Philadelphia, and else where for that matter.
Do what? You obviously have no experience with addicts. "help these people with seeking treatment" There is nothing a loved one, family member, or friend can do or say that will get their addict children, siblings, or parents to seek help, let alone some city officials, that is something the addict has to really want to do themselves. They either do it public (where there is at least a little safety) on the street, or they can do it in burnt out, abandoned houses and buildings, loaded with human feces, vermin, disease. Talk is cheap, if it's so bad to you, then go down there and hand out bottled water, food, cloths, and feminine hygiene care products.

In 1976 after a few years using the needle, amphetamine and morphine every day. I started to pray en turned my live to Jesus. Never had one moment after this I wanted drugs. I was free, realized after a week.

It's good to see so many concerned people giving food and items away to help these people, its taking goodness and godliness into an area of hopelessness and trying to make a difference.

I found these videos a few days ago and for the life of me I don’t get it! It is so sad! I know addiction is easy in my family. I watched it almost destroy my father and two brothers throughout their lives. I was too scared as a teen witnessing peers experimenting with them. Not to say I didn’t partake in alcohol or weed but noticed I didn’t want that road in my life and separated myself from that crowd. I had a horrible upbringing but it made me stronger and wanted more out of my life. I see this and people handing them food, water, clothes and etc. but how is that helping them? Where is all the money they are using on drugs coming from and people are enabling them by giving them the basics they should be providing for themselves! I don’t mean to sound harsh but I just don’t get it! I know addiction is is real and I understand at all costs to stay away from those things because of it! I’ve been at rock bottom in my life but I will not let my life have no meaning or be a zombie! Where is law and why is this being allowed?

I worry a lot because I have children and grandchildren but I worry about the situation because every day there are more and more sometimes I think that Nobody is interested in what is going on because there is nothing to be gained from the problem that this person is going through. doing charity things is great but if for them to continue to do self -destructive things is some kind of neglect, making sure they no longer get a supply of drugs easily and openly is something more important it is also to protect future generations.. must focus on solutions rather than just providing comfort for them to continue to self -harm

We would need universal healthcare. Ending an addiction can be deadly and medical intervention is necessary. It's not easily available...waitlists. The situation people on the street are in limits them in every way even if they are clean and sober. If we dont want to see people on the street like this we need to support low income housing, mental health counseling, universal healthcare, womens health, we need to ensure that there is help before people end up on the streets as well as after. We need to support those trying to better themselves and those who arent able to.

the donations of food make people happy but , what they need besides food is also important for their self worth and confidence .things like mouth wash ,soap/shampoo ,feminine hygiene products, wipes, socks , shoes, toothbrush's ,fingernail files/clippers, and a good backpack .all most everything can be found at a dollar store , and fill up the backpack that you can get at a thrift store. if you just spend TIME with someone ,that could be what they need more than anything.
Since no job opportunities there is little self worth.

The lost children of the United States of America. It's time to deal the drugs the opioid problem, especially fentanyl. 71.000 a year died from overdose. Open new hospitals specifically for this, giving everyone one last chance, give them the clean drug, stabilise them and detox. Very sad that we will all know someone who is in this dire situation.
