Elena did that to shield Jeremy from the trauma that what he'd experienced, in hopes of sending him away to live a less chaotic life. she didn't want him to lead the same life she was, and shielded him from it by taking the memory away of his killing someone, just as she did (Damon) in S1 for Vicki. Elena is a wonderful sister, she wants the best for Jer: a normal life. Elena tries to be a mom to everyone, and yes the show is about the doppelganger bc she is the main character!
People who are saying ''screw Elena'', she was being an extraordinary sister to Jeremy. She was protecting him at all costs and putting his life before hers, like she does for everybody else. He didn't have his memory taken away either, he was compelled to enjoy his life and make the most out of it in Denver, away from all the supernatural within Mystic Falls. People who are saying it's all about Elena, even Alaric went along with it.

she doesnt have a right to do that because if she were to get into any trouble or anything like that and he finds out then she made need him comeback. im just saying its better to stay one step ahead but hell if i was in that situation where she had to make that decision i probably would had done the same thing at that particular moment and not any other moment
