- Watching the news, it seems like ethnic divides are ever-deepening. But how can we solve these complicated problems when each side lives in fear of the other? The answer is simple, argues Syrian-American poet Amal Kassir - it starts with, “What’s your name?”
Amal, a young Muslim-American and native Coloradan, found a platform for her voice growing up working in her family's restaurant. She has been writing poetry since she was a child and has performed in eight countries, sharing her verse everywhere from youth prisons to orphanages to refugee camps.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

David Josiah well you can’t judge a person on just their hijab. Doesn’t mean if her scarf falls off being blown by the wind, and it proves that she’s not a muslim anymore. It’s just because people kept seeing us muslims like a bunch of misleds rebels. Lol. So misunderstandings and one-way communication really gets in the way. What we need to do, is less judging on the exteriors and lessen the expectations. I may not know Amal, like her family does. So who am i to judge yeah? Based on wht she wrote as a poet, is one way to get to know her and Islam itself 🤷🏻♀️

@Shyru#Celestial-master
wow really... How can you assume someone you never heard of or know is not against violence ... The only thing you know about those people from a story is that they are muslim iraqis and they all of the sudden have darkness. You know what they say about assuming it makes an ass out of u and me right
manasi khanna we are living in a time when we assume the worst in people we meet. We used to take people at face value but it doesnt seem wise anymore
toemas8
And logical fallacies are still just that. Conflating separate arguments is not an argument, only a lack of understanding of logic and reason.
Yes, people are people, except where they follow a bizarre ideology that has been a scourge on this planet for 1,400 years. Unfortunately, people like you are ignorant of history and such relativists that reason has no part in their thinking.
On a happier note, yes my Arabic friends are so nice and really do make the best coffee.
The Islamic hordes may have made great coffee when they overran eastern Europe, south Asia, north Africa and the Iberian peninsula, and slaughtered hundreds of thousands in so doing.
What is your point, if there is one?

Amal's personality is just incredible.
Yeah because personality is what is important! guess it doesn't matter about morality, reality or honesty.
@@Zoney06 Yes, those are all very important. However, when giving a speech, the passion, tone and gestures, which convey personality, are very important. Amal is also very real, honest and moral. I meant what I said; but what I did not say seemed to be so obvious as to not need saying.
@@alexisericson241
No, you're mistaken. Ama'ls personality is way too credible, it is Amal's lies what cannot be trusted.
If you can square lying and deceiving with being honest and moral, you're entitled to your view of the world.
But it is unfortunate for the country that way too many people are this gullible.
@@rexnemovi6061 Why is it that you think she is lying to begin with? or about her morality?
@@nimnim4388
Because she is creating false narrative that hurts other people.
Just one example:
As for the lies, she laughs off the idea that Muslim women are forced to wear the hijab or even more restrictive body bags.
The reality is, Muslim women are being killed for not wearing the pre-medieval garb. In the town where I lived at the time, a father with the help of his son and second wife drowned his three daughters and his first wife because he felt "dishonored" by his daughters trying to dress the way their schoolmates did. That's by far not the only case I know of but this one was literally close to home.
And that's about the morality: Any Muslim woman living in the West who wears the hijab, or worse, voluntarily, not to mention promoting it, has the blood of her "honor" killed Muslim sisters on her hands.
I love the confidence she carries herself with and the lovely lilt in her voice. This was an amazing talk, and it honestly made my day. You can tell that she’s an experienced talker, and it’s quite heartwarming.

Hi Jai,
We're not all perfect , we all faults
@Jai Chauhan Islam teaches us to lower our gaze, yes! but by lowering our gaze it doesn't mean to not look at another human of the opposite gender. It means to not look at another person's awrah, that is private parts and those parts that are forbidden by Allah to stare at (unless you're married to that person, ofcourse). So look at woman while delivering a speech all you want, as long as the intent is clean and the gaze is towards the face or the part to which it seems reasonable to gaze, given the situation. For e.g looking at the private parts during a colonoscopy is totally fine.
"no one can speak the names of billions in one breath, unless it's in prayer" wow.
In many of our prayers we ask Allah to guide all those who are lost and in others we ask him to grant everyone Jannah. so that's everyone's name there you go haha

@@Qruxi I'm sorry, but I don't see "Islamophobia" as a valid word. The word "phobia" means "irrational fear". How do you "irrationally fear" a religious framework of ideas? It's nonsensical. The reason this word exists is to shut down any criticism or examination of the actual doctrines of Islam (the Quran/Hadith and all the violent, absurd verses they contain, especially in the Sahih al-Bukhari and the Sahih Muslim, with "sahih" meaning "authentic/correct").

I am a Christian and I was raised to respect everyone. I once asked my grandma why everyone at my school was bullying this one girl just because of her religion, and she replied "They weren't raised like you, they were told they being different is bad, but it isn't" I feel like everyone should know that differences are what make us us. Please don't bully someone for their differences. Instead, try to be nice. I'm not asking much, just a smile in the hallway, or a slight wave. Who knows, you might just brighten up their day.
You got it 👍🏾 if only more people were like you...
Real Christianity is being kind and accepting of others and their religion, like you are. My boyfriend is a devoted Catholic and though he might not understand why I am agnostic, he still respects me and my beliefs. In his words, "Christianity is about being humble and respectful", and it's so messed up that so many people take it to the extreme, like one of my family friends and cousin, who have twisted and cherry picked the bible until their beliefs are unrecognizable and Jesus would be disappointed. There is a fine line between Christianity and racism and it is extremely unfortunate that some people choose to use religion to "excuse" their racism.
true! I do that everyday a smile can always make people's day a little bet brighter ^^
Katie Kareoke . I am not a Christian, but I know a thing or two about the bible. People like you are people who make me happy. As far as I know any religion highly disapproves that kind of behavior really. Which is quite ironic since so many people just don't seem to get it. Guess they have a lot of explanation to do later on if their time has come. However, bullying is one thing. Deliberately putting people in bad daylight on a bigger political scale is something else. I am not saying people always have to agree with each other, but in the end we need to make it happen and work together. If you like it or not. I rather do that with a smile and respect.

For exemple, that US goverment gave a guns to terrorists who were cutting children's head in her home country? But it does not matter to her at all. That's why she'd have to be interested in doing so, doing research to talk about it. No, she will say anything to please and go with the crowd ..... It's really bad to me. I´m sick of it. I´m sick of her, sick of people like her. Speak, speak, speak, bla bla bla, but what did she really do for the people in her homeland????? Nothing. She is just nourishes on their misery.
What's a pity is that I can click the "thumbs up" button 100 times for your comment.
She’s the kind of person I aspire to be.
She has this wonderful vintage sound to her voice.
She speaks a very international kind of English. Not an obvious accent, but you can still tell.
Sounds very American to me. Only Americans are this dynamic
Dust Scatter we like accents
she sounds like a terrorist
Rchuck 92 you’re a miserable human being, I pray that you stop thinking these horrible thoughts🙏🏾
Thanks so much for the courage to get on that stage. I'll keep you in my prayers. :)
What's My mistake. Remember me in your PRAYERS
PRAY FOR ME FOR MY FAMILY I'm MORE HEALTHY + FAST SUCCESS + TRUE PERSON
Angela Mengis 👌👍
OMG this speech was so great, the best i ever heard based on such a controvercial issue, but still forced the audience to clap several times and give a round of applause by standing ovation...
she made me love my name more... she is so wonderful person. I wish I can be like her not just my name
I really cannot take my eyes away and ears away from the minute she start talking. I love how she picks up that topic and present it very bravely and cleverly. Masya Allah she is really smart and a good speaker as well.
Janioong exactly she is so inspirational.
Inspiring? She is sitting on plane handing out mints which could be dangerous.
All religions are bad. Especially abrahamic religions. But believers isnt bad at all. Most of them dont know their own religion. Quran and bible are bad but christians and muslims arent
how are you so sure about your statement? Are you a muslim yourself?
Probably cuz u can’t get past how she’s wadded up an American flag and wrapped it around her head.
Her eyes, her smile, her face, her voice... EVERYTHING just Mashaallah wow
And her MIND...!!!
everyone who disliked this video doesn't like that she is right in every single way and more intellectual than they are.
She looks like a tormented soul and she's as brave as an elephant, I wouldn't have stood for crying during the speech. I gave up long ago the colossal effort to open the eyes of the uninformed masses, thanks to this talk I will consider resuming this struggle which is everyone's.
I hate it when my Hindu family discourages me from having acquaintance with Muslims and feel disgusted whenever people/media stereotype them just because some dumbheads who claim to “follow” the Holy Quran decides to go irrational. Till now, every Muslim I have ever met in my life was sweet, kind and loving and I would die for their mouthwatering biryani. Hope this ridiculous typecasting ends. This is one of the best sensible talks I have seen.
Truth Lover Judge the man not religion
we love u 2 my dear from Somalia
Parents are lucky to have a daughter like you..i will pray for you to get child same like you....how sweet.. your love to biriyani...being in middle east i have seen very good and bad people..from the same community.. no hate for any religion... and no perception by hearing any opinion...betraying your family for a comment shows your real loving personality....instead of correcting them..much love stay positive..
Awwwwwweei ❤️ i'd love to treat you pretty soul with biryani hehe
@@frankcollins4743 They don't know what is happening right now to muslims right now in India.
this is one of the best Ted talks I have seen
Abrar Hadder I agree with you 100%

nah.... this is really good... but dr. temple grandin is the best ted talk. no joke.
he said " one of the best" implying that it's one of the multiple good talks he has seen.
nah... its just really good... but not one of the best.
I just love the way she speaks and convey the moral lessons.
No matter how much hate there is ,the light of love will wipe out all the darkness .
I aspire to be like her♥️
She's so confident, funny, kind, beautiful

99% guarantee

Something I learnt in school was that culture and religion / race are different. Culture is not created by race or religion. After all, we can't judge people by their race or religion because after all, we are just all human beings :)
I guess sort of. Although when you see certain refugees or muslims who have turned cities in England into "no-go zones", it's hard not to relate culture with their religion, considering they are miles away from their homeland, far away from the geographical culture they were brought up in.
It is very true!!!
SUCH A BEAUTIFUL, PACKED AND THOUGHTFUL SPEECH im deeply moved 😔🙏🏻
Dear ALL, Its nice to hear about Muslims like this girl talking about peace, harmony, religious freedom with lots of emotions! But we have to understand why kind of discussions are not possible in countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran, Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, Syria, Egypt, Pakistan, Bangladesh etc? Bigotry is in Muslim countries and not in Western and Secular countries iike US, Europe, India etc. The speaker should question the Islamic countries to all other religions to exist before preaching Americans!
You have free do anything also in islamic country instead violation law of land....You go through the Katar, UAE, Kuwait and discus too. no one stopped you...And now most of the session held there without any interruption. So, change your mindset and explore yourself
anyone watching in 2019??

I love her style of talking, her poetry, the fluctuation in her voice. I love it. I love her message.
The way she laughs, it's beautiful ♥️
People like this gives me hope for humanity.
Amal indeed
silentpanda HEY DONT STEAL MY PICTURES
Her name means hope, too.
The next time someone says “go back to your country” her mom should say “oh shoot! I keep forgetting to plan a trip back to Iowa! Thanks for reminding me!”
Civil war is inevitable!
We either going to split USA or we will kill each other for islam.
and forsake the home of her family completely? Why not tell the truth and be proud of where she is from? It's okay to love where you are from isn't it.. even if she was from Iowa, if she is wearing a Hijab, I doubt she learned that from tradition and culture coming from Iowa..
@@Smooth0vibrations apparently Muslims do live in Iowa, so America IS her country.
Get over it.
Then change the phrase, "go back to the desert" or "go back to the desert to enjoy your sharia"
Courson I think you’re missing the point here. By saying that she should be learning something from Iowa, so I assume she should be dressed or look like a Red Indian? Just like you do?
